I had a pet rock circa 1978. Don't know whatever happened to my rock.

I was watching Arthur on TV years ago and they had one of these.

I was allowed to have a pet rock because I was allergic to real pets and couldn't even have stuffed animals (severe dust allergy). But I always suspected my dad just picked up my pet rock at a quarry or on the side of the road because it was gray and white and kind of sparkly, not like the ones in the ads. I don't think it even came in a box. I ended up with fake Earth Shoes, too. Whatever, Daddy.

There really was a manufactured Pet Rock which was sold for two bucks, came in a box and even had an instruction sheet on how to care for it. I forgot which company did this, but it was a short-lived fad in 1976.

A little more inside stuff about Pet Rocks. These were sold by Rock Bottom Productions out of Los Gatos, California. The box resembled a McDonald's Happy Meal box. The rocks came with straw nest, certificate of authenticity...and the instruction manual, which was meant to make fun of raising or training living pets. All mockery, all gimmick aimed at kids.
