Description
Hollow rubber doll about 4" tall (various colors available orange, blue, maybe others) with battery-powered light in head and momentary power switch under belly (a slide-in plastic cartridge). A gremlin/ratfink bald guy with clear plastic jewels for eyes and a tooth. An elastic lanyard out the top of his head. The jingle went: "You press their funny tummy, it makes 'em light; Everybody's having fun with Looney Light." I'd love to find one of these... but no one has heard of them. Must be around 1971.

I found this webpage doing a search for a LOONEY LIGHT. I had one of these, and I remember what year it was, 1968, I saw the ad on television (I do remember "Looney Light! Looney Light!" and kids riding bicycles) and wanted one for my birthday, and I got it (I expect he wasn't expensive)! Hard to believe that was 40 years ago. He had a lanyard as you wrote that went thru his head so you could wear him 'round your neck. I collect a lot of vintage 60s stuff, even Mini Martians, but LOONEY LIGHT never seems to turn up. You may contact me at allhallowsday@yahoo.com

I just found this page searching for LOONEY LIGHT, too! There's not a one to be had, on ebay...but SURELY, they must still be out there somewhere...I think mine was green. I got this in the mid '60's, i think. Yep. Wasn't as late as '70. Let me know if you find 'em! I'm starting to recollect all the toys i loved from my childhood...have you SEEN the price of upsy downsies, and the Green Ghost game?!? Gasp. I must be old....:) elektra001@yahoo.com

I still have mine from when I was a kid. The dog got it and pulled out the insert and its toes have some teeth marks on them. To bad, I wish he was in better shape. I loved that ugly little thing! Nearly Killed the dog!

I was so excited to read these stories about looney lights. I was beginning to think noone else in this world knew what one was! I had a yellow one when I was a little girl. I used to have dreams that he would run away from me then reappear on my window sill. I had kept him for about 40 years until one day my husband talked me into throwing him away because I had lost the battery insert. I wish I hadn't done that! I miss that little guy!

I still have 2 or 3! There was the bald guy, but also a furry guy. My blue bald guy lasted with the original battery (from 1971) into the late 80s's! I was thinking of contacting Guinness Book of World Records- an AA battery lasting more than 15 years! Anyway, I'll have to go dig them up now...

I still remember getting my Looney Light from Lit Brothers department store in South Philly around 1969. He was yellow and I carried him everywhere. I have no idea where he went, but I wish I still had him. Even seeing a picture of one would be cool. A friend of mine had a blue one, and she is the only other person I know who even knows what a Looney Light is!

They come up on ebay from time to time. My brother & I used to have them also here in LA.

I found my blue one the other day! He is the bald guy. Also have a green furry one I'm still searching for. I'm going to clean up the blue one and try putting a new battery in him. I remember they had elastic cords with which you could hang them around your neck. It's no longer attached to my guy though. Once I clean him up I'll take a picture and give a link here for everyone to see, and reminisce.

I have a little blue Looney Light. I would explain him to my friends and no one had any memory of him! I searched all over the net only using the name I found stamped into the rubber on his back, "Horsman Dolls 1968"..and I was able to find "Looney Light", and even "Louie Loonie Love Light!!" haha. I am so happy to find this site! I have submitted a photo of him which is being reviewed before they publish..I hope others also submit photos!

WOW! I'm so glad others remember the Looney Light toys too. My sisters and I each had one and we used to sit in the dark and intone "looney light, looney light, looney light..." and my dad would make us stop 'cause it sounded so creepy. I would LOVE to find one that works to give to my little sister (now aged 47) for x-mas... Can't wait to see photos in the gallery! Thanks !

I just found one on ebay. I don't think it's worth anywhere near the $100+ they're asking for it, but it is cool to see one in yellow.

My sister wore a looney light around her neck when I was singing "The Messiah" in high school and kept lighting it when we were trying to sing, everyone cracked up. I would love to find one to give her for Christmas.

I too had the blue one. I got it one Christmas from "Santa" along with 'Adventure Boy' and 'Wee Pals'. They don't make toys like those anymore.

I still have a green one. Really liked it when I was a kid. They came out in 1968.

Got one on ebay for just under a hundred bucks and no regrets. It's in remarkably good shape. Insert still there and it still lights. The cord is still attached. Even came with the original box! Expensive, yes, but just awesome to replace the one I had as a kid. Now, anyone know what the numbers on the back mean? In addition to the date (1968) the number 19 shows up. Curious about that.
Brian - June 02, 2012 - Report this comment
The number on the head is 17, not 19. Still no idea what it means.

Brian you are lucky. I think it was one of my favorite toys as a kid. I cannot find one anywhere. I don't know what happened to the one i had. I took real good care of it so it was in great shape. The parents probably gave it away..........they have scarred me for life! :)

I,ve got to say i,ve been looking for one of these loony lights for about 15 years.Ihad the one that looked like a little bald troll and i think the color was a blue greenish? I cried when i found this site because i was a sickly kid in the mid 60s my parents got me one. I was beginning to think i imagined it.I would love to see a picture or the image of one. It,s the last link and memory of a happy and innocent child hood.

I also thought I was the only one to remember this guy. Mine was blue with hair, my sis had yellow. The only thing similar I have found was a green monster on eBay just now. Would love to see a picture as well. I remember it looking similar to a troll doll.

I'm dying to hear the looney lights commercial from the 60's. The woman singing "Looney lights, Looney lights... They're goovey little people, you'll love em' day and night...."
Jack - July 24, 2014 - Report this comment
John, that's EXACTLY how the commercial went! :-) SOMEbody's gotta know how to find that commercial! Back in 1968 and '69, Looney Lites were only 99 cents a piece! I wish someone like Polar Lites would reissue them!
VES - October 07, 2014 - Report this comment
They show ip on ebay periodically. Correct spelling for this toy is LOONIE LITE. Maybe u will have more success with that spelling. I still have mine since childhood.

I just found my Yellow Lion Loonie Lite the other day. It has been packed away for many, many years. It brought back great memories of being a kid growing up in the 1960s.

Unfortionitly I never had one or even saw them in a store. But all these years I remember that commercial vividly! The song in the commercial went like this; LOONN-NIE LIGHTS! LOONN-NIE LIGHTS! THE'RE GROOVY LITTLE PEOPLE, YOU'LL LOVE EM DAY AND NIGHT. WITH A NOSE, A TOOTH, AND EYES THAT LIGHT! WEAR EM 'ROUND YOU NECK, WEAR EM ANYPLACE. SIGNAL ALL YOUR FRIENDS WITH A LOONIE LIGHT'S FACE! PRESS THE FUNNY TUMMY, IT MAKES THEM LIGHT! EVERYONE IS HAVING FUN WITH LOON-NIE LIGHTS! LOONN-NIE LIGHTS! LOONN-NIE LIGHTS!

I still miss my little green Loonie Lite. Came across a green dinosaur shape in working order a few years ago. He has the same eyes and tooth and has become our roaming gnome. Happy to see all the love for the Loonie Lite!

I got the red one when I was 6 years old and I still have it now that I am well over 50. I have long since lost the battery pack, but a small flashlight works good. Dang I miss those days :)

Yay! It’s real! I thought I’d just imagined it. Had one in the mid-late 60’s. Remember the jingle. Would love to find one!

I always remembered having Loonie Lites as a child. When I described them to friends my age no one knew what I was talking about. I tried to research them thinking that they were called Looney Light Up. Yesterday while going through a box of my old toys I found four Loonie Lites and was happy to find that I had indeed had the toy I remembered so fondly. Lucky me!!

My brother and I had these as Xmas gifts, mine was green, I was 2, had a vague idea of him and couldn’t remember what he was called, after some google searches of lite up troll with cigarette, I found him, and bought him on ebay and fixed him. He’s awsome! And that cigarette? Now that I’m all grown up, I think it’s a tooth !

Yay! I'm not the only fan! I got the Green Dog-like Dinosaur early '70s when I was about 5 yrs old. After much use the insert broke but he became cuddlier. Went everywhere with me even Colombia SA. He always showed in pics like a traveling gnome of a previous comment (Happy to see someone else partaking in the tradition!) Even made my parents double back across states on a trip because I forgot him at my cousins. His name is Green or Verde and resides on a prominent shelf in my studio 52 years later.
