I had a fidget as a child in the seventies. I had found it a few years back. It still worked, but not as well as it did when it was new of course. Fidgets were actually not round discs, but rather octagonal discs. The back of a fidget had a white vinyl/plastic backing that allowed one to press the oil-like colorants around. One could view the psychedelic colors from the front clear plastic viewing window. They where fun to play with. I wish I could find a new one! Lance, thank you, thank you, thank you. You're the only other person who remembers this toy. Every now and then its image pops into my mind, and I'm dying to see one again. I've also searched everywhere for one. Mine from my childhood is probably lying around in my parents' basement somewhere. Maybe someday I'll come across it. And for some reason, I seem to remember the TV commercial for Fidgets having something to do with a real-life dolphin. Anyway, I'm glad there's at least one out there that still works, and thanks for the memory!

OMG...I have been searching for this for the longest time. I have found no one who remembers this toy either! I have searched ebay and every retro online store with no luck. I started to think I imagined the whole thing...LOL

Finally, I know what it's called! I found my old Fidget a few days ago. My overly curious brothers took a sharp object to it back in the day, so the "lens" is scratched, and there's some air bubbles in it, but it still works. I WANT A NEW ONE!

I HAVE ONE BUT IT DRIED UP INSIDE LONG AGO!!!!

I had one, too! It was creamy-white, octagonal. Fit into the palm of my hand. I remember pushing my finger and running my fingernail against the squishy back to see the swirly colors!

OMG...me too....I have wonderful memories of my fidget. When I ask friends and family if they remember my fidget, they have no idea what I am talking about. I started to think I made it up too!!! Woo-Hoo!!!! So, who made the Fidget? Was it Hasbro, Whamo ??!! I can't remember!! Somebody find someone that still has some for sale!!! Help!! ......Have a nice day!!! =)

OK, so there are officially SEVEN other people that have the same memory as me - now I know I'm not crazy. I feel EXACTLY like you guys do. It's a vague memory at this point but I was 95% sure it was called the Fidget - now I'm 100%!!! I have looked everywhere for this!! This is the first time I have even found people talking about it! How can we find it??
rhizome - March 16, 2008 - Report this comment
I think they were also called "Touch Me," or perhaps that was a competitor. I wouldn't characterize the colors as psychedelic- nothing garish. One could inscribe dark lines by pressing on the back with a fingernail; if one pressed softly w/ fingertips it created more of a bruised look. The air bubble was one of the more fascinating facets- one could split it up into smaller bubbles and then merge them again. I recall that mine was green, blue and brown.

I've asked every toy store I've been to and only a few "older" people remember them....me too! No one has one but someone needs to make them again. I got mine at the 5 & Dime store in Sherman Oaks...I need one to prove to my child that I'm not crazy either!
Sinderz - April 23, 2008 - Report this comment
More internet news is it was called SPACE FIDGET. Now I recall mine was a keychain! It's all slowly coming back.

Oh man, I am sooo glad I never throw anything out. I found mine a few days ago. Still works for the most part. I remember getting it in a grab bag in elementary school and thinking it was the coolest thing ever for a while. I can't believe no one on eBay even has one of these for sale (of course, I'm not putting mine up for sale either). I'll try posting a picture of it. I'm so glad other people remember it!

I keep coming across my Fidget. I stick it on a shelf or put it in a drawer and it keeps turning up to haunt me. It still works and says Fidget on the back. Odd little toy but glad to see other people remember it too.

I had one of these as a kid! I remember taking it apart to see what was inside. Of course being a little kid I just left it outside by my driveway. Then my dog got to it. Her tounge was black for a few hours...
Mike - August 11, 2008 - Report this comment
You have made my day. As a kid, this was one of my very favorite toys. Just yesterday I was going through some boxes in my storage unit and found mine. Half of it was black and dried up, but the other half still swirled. I took it home and cleaned it up, and ran some warm water over it. I've been gently working the back and now have it 4/5 restored - sort of. It doesn't have as much fluid as it once did so it doesn't swirl quite as much, and it's pretty red now, not showing the blues and greens like it used to. Still, I have my Fidget! If anyone ever sees a bunch of these for sale anywhere in better condition, let us all know. I'd buy one.

Does anyone know how you spell it? I have seen Fidget, Figet, and Figit on the Internet. I had one around 1973 or 1974, but I can't remember what happened to it. Seemed like almost every kid had one back then and now very few people seem to know it existed.

They must have re-released these at some point in the late 80's or early 90's as I got one during that period of time. I thought it was pretty cool, though I think I wrecked the back of mine at some point and had to throw it out.

I found mine recently and it has turned black. It's not dried up, but I can only get occasional flashes of color. Did it oxidize? Can it be saved? I'll take any advice anyone has. I think I got mine at a science museum, possibly in DC at one of the Smithsonian branches.

Guess we all must be around the same age since we have the same memory! Funny how the simplest toys bring back the best memories! Does anyone remember something called Doodle Lite (light?). It was a glow worm type of thing and the nose lit up and you drew with light on a soft board. Can't find it anywhere, any memories? Thanks!

I feel as though I have just seen Rosebud! This page has made my day. I gasped when I opened it and saw the same octagonal, greenish one I had. I had a few, actually, back in the day. I have been trolling the internet for years trying to find one of these. I recalled it as a "Touch Me" (a very 70s name indeed). Does anyone know where to get one, have one they want to part with, etc?? Toy manufacturers, take note! Thank you, thank you, for this memory and the picture.

Me too! I have been wondering about this for years. Couldn't remember the name. Wow, I want one again too! I think I got mine in the early 70s. Wonder what that stuff inside was? It looked toxic but was so COOL (or should I say it was NEAT?)!

A buddy of mine worked in the factory that made them, which has since gone out of business, and held the only copywrite? They made them in two sizes, small (totally round) and large (the octangle). He sent me some old stock (around two dozen) a few years back, but I have since given them away at gigs. He said the Fed's watched them closely because one of the chemicals they used in the manufacture, is the same as used in the manufacture of a comon illegal drug.

Totally weird. I'd forgotten about that thing... I had one as a pre-teen in the early 80's, it was super cool. One day I noticed it was really neat if you back-lit the thing, so I'd put it on a little spotlight desk-lamp, and look at it, and see what patterns projected through the thing onto the wall. Then I forgot it was on there, and it melted. The end.

I totally remembered the name of this gadget and am so happy to see so many people loved it the way I did. When I would go food shopping with mom as a kid the deal was she would buy me a new fidget. It kept me busy while she shopped. They sold them at Shop Rite!!

I had a fidget. My friend had one also, and showed it to a hippie in Atlanta, who then thrust it into an Outlaw Bikers face. He promptly popped the hippie in the nose and screamed 'Don't freak me out". Was so funny.
