I had a fidget as a child in the seventies. I had found it a few years back. It still worked, but not as well as it did when it was new of course. Fidgets were actually not round discs, but rather octagonal discs. The back of a fidget had a white vinyl/plastic backing that allowed one to press the oil-like colorants around. One could view the psychedelic colors from the front clear plastic viewing window. They where fun to play with. I wish I could find a new one! Lance, thank you, thank you, thank you. You're the only other person who remembers this toy. Every now and then its image pops into my mind, and I'm dying to see one again. I've also searched everywhere for one. Mine from my childhood is probably lying around in my parents' basement somewhere. Maybe someday I'll come across it. And for some reason, I seem to remember the TV commercial for Fidgets having something to do with a real-life dolphin. Anyway, I'm glad there's at least one out there that still works, and thanks for the memory!

OMG...I have been searching for this for the longest time. I have found no one who remembers this toy either! I have searched ebay and every retro online store with no luck. I started to think I imagined the whole thing...LOL
Mike - December 14, 2007 - Report this comment
Finally, I know what it's called! I found my old Fidget a few days ago. My overly curious brothers took a sharp object to it back in the day, so the "lens" is scratched, and there's some air bubbles in it, but it still works. I WANT A NEW ONE!
HOLLIS - December 21, 2007 - Report this comment
I HAVE ONE BUT IT DRIED UP INSIDE LONG AGO!!!!
luvinwoofie - January 22, 2008 - Report this comment
I had one, too! It was creamy-white, octagonal. Fit into the palm of my hand. I remember pushing my finger and running my fingernail against the squishy back to see the swirly colors!
PeLoHa Denise - March 10, 2008 - Report this comment
OMG...me too....I have wonderful memories of my fidget. When I ask friends and family if they remember my fidget, they have no idea what I am talking about. I started to think I made it up too!!! Woo-Hoo!!!! So, who made the Fidget? Was it Hasbro, Whamo ??!! I can't remember!! Somebody find someone that still has some for sale!!! Help!! ......Have a nice day!!! =)

OK, so there are officially SEVEN other people that have the same memory as me - now I know I'm not crazy. I feel EXACTLY like you guys do. It's a vague memory at this point but I was 95% sure it was called the Fidget - now I'm 100%!!! I have looked everywhere for this!! This is the first time I have even found people talking about it! How can we find it??
rhizome - March 16, 2008 - Report this comment
I think they were also called "Touch Me," or perhaps that was a competitor. I wouldn't characterize the colors as psychedelic- nothing garish. One could inscribe dark lines by pressing on the back with a fingernail; if one pressed softly w/ fingertips it created more of a bruised look. The air bubble was one of the more fascinating facets- one could split it up into smaller bubbles and then merge them again. I recall that mine was green, blue and brown.
Sinderz - April 23, 2008 - Report this comment
I've asked every toy store I've been to and only a few "older" people remember them....me too! No one has one but someone needs to make them again. I got mine at the 5 & Dime store in Sherman Oaks...I need one to prove to my child that I'm not crazy either!

More internet news is it was called SPACE FIDGET. Now I recall mine was a keychain! It's all slowly coming back.

Oh man, I am sooo glad I never throw anything out. I found mine a few days ago. Still works for the most part. I remember getting it in a grab bag in elementary school and thinking it was the coolest thing ever for a while. I can't believe no one on eBay even has one of these for sale (of course, I'm not putting mine up for sale either). I'll try posting a picture of it. I'm so glad other people remember it!

I had one of these as a kid! I remember taking it apart to see what was inside. Of course being a little kid I just left it outside by my driveway. Then my dog got to it. Her tounge was black for a few hours...
Mike - August 10, 2008 - Report this comment
You have made my day. As a kid, this was one of my very favorite toys. Just yesterday I was going through some boxes in my storage unit and found mine. Half of it was black and dried up, but the other half still swirled. I took it home and cleaned it up, and ran some warm water over it. I've been gently working the back and now have it 4/5 restored - sort of. It doesn't have as much fluid as it once did so it doesn't swirl quite as much, and it's pretty red now, not showing the blues and greens like it used to. Still, I have my Fidget! If anyone ever sees a bunch of these for sale anywhere in better condition, let us all know. I'd buy one.

They must have re-released these at some point in the late 80's or early 90's as I got one during that period of time. I thought it was pretty cool, though I think I wrecked the back of mine at some point and had to throw it out.

A buddy of mine worked in the factory that made them, which has since gone out of business, and held the only copywrite? They made them in two sizes, small (totally round) and large (the octangle). He sent me some old stock (around two dozen) a few years back, but I have since given them away at gigs. He said the Fed's watched them closely because one of the chemicals they used in the manufacture, is the same as used in the manufacture of a comon illegal drug.

Totally weird. I'd forgotten about that thing... I had one as a pre-teen in the early 80's, it was super cool. One day I noticed it was really neat if you back-lit the thing, so I'd put it on a little spotlight desk-lamp, and look at it, and see what patterns projected through the thing onto the wall. Then I forgot it was on there, and it melted. The end.

As a teenager, during high school and college vacations, I worked for Athol Research Company in Athol, MA. The owner of the company was Arthur Bernstein, who lived in NYC and would come to the plant a couple of times a year. I remember mixing the fidget material on the shipping dock in a 55-gallon drum with a boat motor during the summer and even assembling them. The fidget material was a mixture of paint and oil that was applied to a black mylar type material with adhesive around the edges. The plastic disk placed over the mylar after a blob of paint was applied. The company no longer exists but I don't know if the technology was ever sold to another company.

They used to sell them at the Spencer\\'s store in Northwood\\'s mall in North Charleston, SC. My first one ended up getting gathered up with wrapping paper and tossed out. I got a new one a few days later. For people who have no idea what I mean, I usually say that it was like a liquid mood necklace. I want a new one.

Wow, people remember the Fidgit! For who knows what reason, this toy just popped into my mind, and I decided to do a search on it. Naturally, I had one in the 70s, when I was a kid. I loved it. And I have no idea what happened to it. I either gave it to a friend or a sibling, or it broke. Or, I lost it. Anyway, I'd love to get one again. Fun little casual toy.
RandomTerrain.com - December 16, 2010 - Report this comment
I had one in the early 1970s. It's something you think is cool, then get bored with and give away. You can always buy another one later if you get the urge to play with one again. WRONG! If you have a toy you even slightly like, hold onto it! It might be tempting to sell your toys for food money or give them away because you don't have enough room, but hold out and make room. You'll be glad you did years later. I had a Fidget at the same time I had a Mattel Funlight with that circular slide filled with blue liquid and those 'bubbles' that moved around like they were alive. Although different, the blue Funlight slide and the Fidget reminded me of each other. The Wham-O Magic Window I got a couple of years later was a different kind of thing (with blue and white 'sand' that reminded me of ocean waves), but all three kind of go together in my mind. If I had the money, I'd buy these three toys if I could find them. And if I got bored with them this time, I wouldn't sell them because I'm not quite as stupid as I used to be.

Can not believe I finally found something on the fidget. Been wanting to get one for quite awhile. I use to love my fidget. When I talk to people about toys from the 70's I mention it and no one remembers it. I certainly do, would love to get one.

So glad to find these. One of my fave examples of psychedelia. We sold these in the head shop I worked in during the late sixties, early seventies. We called them San Francisco Touch-Me's. I should get one to go with my purple lava lamp. Wish I'd still had one when I quit smoking!

I grew up playing with my mother's "touch-me" and her friends all had them too. The ones I used were square and yes, I totally REMEMBER them! (now if only I could find someone who remembers a sci-fi show I once saw with a big fat lady ina polka dot dress whose husband tries to drug her into thinking she is insane while she hallucinates that she is on an island where all the women are made to have babies they never see to keep the world of men populated.)

Okay! so we are not all crazy! we really did have Fidgets! Now if someone could find out who invented these nifty little things they should tell them to re-invent them and make some more off of them!! there are those of us out here that would be buying them up! As for those who refuse to sell theirs on e-bay.....you are selfish!lol

My mom and Aunt had one of these and when my brother and I were little-they must have been old by then because this was some time late 80's, we would always take them to play with.

My mom bought this for me when I was about 5 or 6. It came in handy at the doctor's office, or on long subway and bus rides. When I was married in the 80s, they made these again, and I bought one for my ex-hubby who had a little trouble sitting still in church! Ha! Just like a kid.

Fidget!! I had one when I was 5. I loved it more than anything on the planet. I took it to 1st grade and one day on the bus ride home realized I threw it out inside my brown lunch bag at lunchtime. It was very traumatizing and I've thought of it many times over the decades but never thought I'd see it again!! The healing has begun... Thanks for posting :^>

I had one of these too, had to be early 70s. I was still in grade school. I graduated high school in 81. Mine had a smiley face on it. I have no idea what happened to it, but I don't remember calling it a fidget. But now you can kind of get the same effect by running your finger over your laptop screen... =-)

The long lost Fidgit! No one that I grew up with remembers this toy except me -- not even my brother and sister. I keep telling my kids about it and they can't even picture what it might have looked like. Now I have the picture to show them. Thanks for post it. There also a photo of one someone is selling on ebay -- they're asking $24. Yipes!

I had one back in 1972 when I was eight years old that I'd saved up my allowance (a quarter a week) to buy. I was so sad when I realized that I had left it on the dining room table as we fled from our house during hurricane Agnes and when he flood waters nearly reached the second story, I knew it was ruined. Imagine my relief when returning home I was surprised that the entire dining room table had lifted up and, though it was now standing on top of the kitchen table, my Fidget was safe and CLEAN and waiting to be played with!! That became one of the few toys that the flood-mud didn't get and I played with for years after.

Had one of these. I remember bringing it to class, as a small group of classmates hovered around me in awe. My science teacher was not happy, so she decided I go up to the front and give a lecture about the product. I was the camera shy type, so you can only imagine..

I had a Fidget in 4th grade. (1972+/-) I waited so long to get it and I finally had it, brought it to school and my teacher took it away because I was playing with it. Never got it back or got another one and I have been missing it ever since. That's how it was back then. Tough love. I remembered this, not that I had forgotten, because my kindergartener (yes, I'm 49 and have a 6 year old) told me that her teacher took something away from her today and gave it back later. So I told her she was lucky and recounted the story of my long lost Fidget. She asked me what else I had ever had taken away and of course, I said, "nothing."

Ok, ok, I worked at the fidget factory. The original manufacturer was Athol Plastics of Athol, MA. The company specialized in plastic combs, mirrors, novelty soaps, etc. I had a fidget when I was in the service (psychedelic 60s). After leaving the service (army/paratrooper) in 1971, I went back to my job as a draftsman in Dover, NH. I wrote to Athol plastics, told them I loved the fidget and had ideas of my own (celestial fluid, etc.). They offered me a job. It was supposed to be R&D, but it turned out to be shipping and receiving. I've literally been up to my elbows in fidgets. mmaloney@iplawdrawings.com

So do you still have any? I remember buying some at the science museum of mn, but they were not called anything. I think they were loose in the kids 'junk toy' bin. Sad that they are no longer made. Looks like eBay is only hope... The one I had was a circle black on bottom, and only 2" or so across. Why is such a silly toy such an important memory?

I had one too around early 1980. I remember getting it in Toys "R" Us in Brooklyn. I remember it being a rectangle shape though with dark colours blacks, reds, maybe yellow and greens, blue, It was cool. I think I peeled off the backing to see what made it do what it did as I always ripped everything apart and put them back together just to see how they were built. I couldn't remember the name of this thing until today finding this site. Thanks! I love the 80's. I'm still an 80's kid No ipods, just my vintage Sony Walkmans I bought back in 1983, Rubik's cube, Records, and cassettes. Wish I can go back to those days again. Great music and fashions too.

I'm looking for some thing similar. It was a rectangle that was colorful stitches/swirls. On top of that was a black viscous goo all covered in clear vinyl/plastic. There was a plastic stylus that you would draw on the plastic that pushed the black goo away to reveal the colored line. Any ideas?
