I still remember the theme song..."Tuna twist makes tuna taste, fresh as a garden". I remember my mom being so disappointed when it was discontinued. It basically was a seasoning mix (several flavors available) you added to your tuna.
kay68 - September 25, 2007 - Report this comment
This was the ONLY way I would touch tuna
EgyptLyn - March 01, 2008 - Report this comment
The ONLY way we made tuna sandwiches. Where can we find it?? Why did they discontinue it??? It seems like every time I find something I like, they either "new & improve" it, or discontinue it altogether!! Halo Shampoo, Tuna Twist, Whip n Chill, Crystal creme candies, etc. Can't leave anything alone!!! Well, I'm all done. Thanks for letting me get it off my chest! At least I know I'm not alone! Thanks!
Stephanie - March 18, 2008 - Report this comment
Likewise, I am glad to not be alone in my loving memory of Tuna Twist! It's frustrating while reminising about the past hardly anyone remembers it. I wish it would come back.

I remember another part of the theme song. "I'm Sir Celery. I'm Miss Parsley. We're the Onion Twins. Oh, Tuna Twist, Tuna Twist, fresh from the garden."
billy D - May 22, 2008 - Report this comment
I loved it...dehydrated celery onion parsley in a packet with other flavors. Best tuna ever..I havent liked tuna as much since. Anyone remember Lemon Pudding Cake...it was a mix a dry cake on top with lemon pudding underneath..yum!
Jeff - May 27, 2008 - Report this comment
There are some great new tuna products on the market now. They put them in foil bags, and have flavors like teriyaki, lemon dill, etc. Very expensive though. I stock up on them when there is a 2-for-1 sale. And you don't have to mix any powder into the tuna.
Stephanie - June 20, 2008 - Report this comment
My sister use to make this for us when we were little and we all loved it, then they recalled it or discontinued it. Remember the Food Stix I think they said it was the snack that the astronauts ate.
Jez - July 24, 2008 - Report this comment
No one I know remembers this stuff and they think I am nuts. At last, proof the stuff existed! Is it true they took it off the market because it was causing blindness?
Tarah - July 31, 2008 - Report this comment
I loved Tuna Twist and have been looking for it for years. I tell my kids about Tuna Twist and they think I have lost my mind, because they have never seen or heard of it. What happened to it? Also what happened to Squeek shampoo and conditioner, it was the best. It had a great smell and made your hair look great.
Kirby - July 31, 2008 - Report this comment
I could not remember the name of the product -- just the onion twins. We used to use it as a joke. "Onion twins powers activate!" Of course, taking the Wonder twins line from the Super Friends then adding your own smell and oder as your power.
charlie - August 15, 2008 - Report this comment
I have never used tuna twist. But my wife tells me about every time we make tuna. She says she loved it. Eat alot of it and she is not blind or sick.

They need to bring it back on the market!! I miss Tuna Twist SO much!!!! PLEEEEEEZE bring it back!!!!
Deb - October 22, 2008 - Report this comment
I loved this too! I hate mayonaise, so by adding the veggies (you had to first rehydrate them with a bit of water) made it possible to have tuna with just a smidgin of mayo...I also remember the snack astronauts ate. I think Pillsbury made them and they were called Space Sticks. The peanut butter were my fav with a somewhat imitation but delicious taste! I wonder if they would still taste good as an adult.
Mike - November 06, 2008 - Report this comment
The issue with Tuna Twist was that the parsley, onion etc were dehydrated and since there is not a lot of moisture in the tuna some were consumed before they were "rehydrated" and caused some gastric distress... some pretty severe.
Karen - December 24, 2008 - Report this comment
I miss Tuna Twist also so I came up with this version 1 can of chuck light tuna in water (for flavor) 1 can of Albacore in water (texture) dried celery flakes, dried onion flakes, dried parsley (Less onion flakes - they are the strongest) 1-2 Tablespoons of TVP (Texture Vegetable Protein) - that is what stretches the the tuna to make more sandwiches. I drain the tuna and use some of the liquid from the chuck light to rehydrate the dried vegetables and TVP the liquid gives the TVP that tuna flavor. (This just takes a few minutes) Mix together with tuna and mayo and eat. My son is a part-time vegetarian and that is how I came across the TVP, this recipe is pretty close to the Tuna Twist I remember but then again that was many years ago. If anyone tries it and can make some improvements let me know.
Leanda - January 10, 2009 - Report this comment
OK Folks, I admit to have been addicted to the twist. Nothing else would or could make me eat tuna. I would love this to come back on the market but I did find that by adding onion and garlic powders, celery salt, dill weed, sweet pickle relish, salt and pepper plus the magic ingredient a tablespoon of SUGAR... yes, sugar comes in for a close second. Go ahead try it
Bonnie - January 26, 2009 - Report this comment
Yeah, I loved that stuff. But it made me so sick. Gastric distress for sure. Soon after, Tuna Twist was off the market.

I too loved this stuff, and still look for ways to immitate the flavor (celery powder, a little parsley, or mixing with fat free ranch dressing). My mom would ALWAYS mix in Tuna Twist, but now she claims she never heard of the stuff. I'm the only person I know who still remembers it!

WOW--Ive been searching for a Tuna Twist box for YEARS... people tell me Im crazy, btu I can sing the jingle, too. They discontinues it because one of the ingredients turned out to be carcenogenic. IT was discontinued very soon after it was released. If ANYONE has a picture or commercial I'd LOVE to see it.

that gastric distress stuff is bs. I LIVED on this tuna twist when I was little. It was my favorite food. When I was in the hospital once, when I was 6 or so, I would eat nothing else! I was a tiny lil thing and never had stomache problems. How about they rehydrate the onion and celery before pos, or package it in foil bags with the tuna, so it rehydrates itself, you add the mayo??(btw for the person who mentioned the prepackaged flavored tunas available now, not the same...not the same at all.) Maybe if we all wrote in to Nabisco...
Andrew in Phoenix - June 16, 2009 - Report this comment
I had Tuna Twist when I was 13 and suffered diarrhea as a result. Shortly afterwards, my uncle in Los Angeles (who I was staying with at the time) brought me an article from the L.A. Times linking Tuna Twist to gastrointestinal illness. Nabisco was right to pull it from the market.

I loved Tuna Twist. The concept was simple...dehydrate celery, parsley, onions and other seasonings, add to tuna and mayo and enjoy. I never had a problem with GI upset from the product. I wonder what the offending ingredient was. I've tried making a homemade version from dried herbs, etc. but it was never as good as the real thing. I wish they would bring it back. It was a great way to get kids used to eating tunafish.

It may not be as fun as the old gang at Tuna Twist; "I'm Sir Celery. I'm Miss Parsley. We're the Onion Twins. Oh, Tuna Twist, Tuna Twist, fresh from the garden," but I'm going to try StarKist Tuna Creations. They say it's good mixed into salmon, as well. I've missed Tuna Twist since my youth and hope StarKist's Tuna Creations is just as good. They claim the ingredients of it's "flavor fresh pouch turns regular tuna into a flavor explosion."

I have found a really close substitute for the old tuna twist!!!! 1 can tuna in water drained. All the rest to taste. dried parsley dried minced onion 1/2 half the dried vegetables from Knorr Veg soup mix Mayo mix all then add some of the Knorr powder to taste. chill . It is truly as yummy as the old twist packet. I eat it everyday now and never miss the old 70's product. Happy eating!!!!

I LOVED this stuff! That gastric distress is nut, because you were supposed to HYDRATE it before mixing with the tuna, and even dried would not hurt anyone. Love the suggestions for a similar mix offered here! Wow....even my sister doesn't remember the stuff, and we all ate it a lot! They need to re-release this product!

If I recall correctly, Tuna Twist appeared in the late 70's disappeared for a few years and was back again about 1981 then vanished again a year or two later. I loved it, it was the only way I'd eat a tuna sandwich and I don't remember any stories of illness from it.

I too loved Tuna Twist. It was literally the first thing I could make by myself in the kitchen, even though it would take me an hour to open a can of tuna with our old hand held can opener. After it was discontinued and I grew up I realized that it wasn't that hard to make great tuna...just sing the jingle while adding ingredients. HELLO...a little Sir Parsley, a little Ms. Celery, the onion twins and their friends salt, pepper and a teeny weeny bit of garlic.

I never knew so many people missed Tuna Twist! My mom made this for us growing up too in late 70's to early 80's this was the only way we ate tuna. I dont remember hearing about people getting sick but if they did it had to be from something else. People today have IBS and other problems and Tuna Twist is not available so there cant be a connection. The instructions said to let it set so the dry mix could rehydrate. I remember once we had it mixed we put it in the refrigerator and had to wait like 10 min or so we ate this stuff all the time never had any problems. I have missed it ever since. i also remember tuna twist, and recalled as a kid, my mom made me tuna twist and i loved it! i was disappointed when it was no longer available. one day i was thinking about it, wanting to make my tuna different, and today i think i managed to pull off a tuna salad recipe similar to what i remember the tuna twist taking like... i used 4 cans of tuna (in water, drained), chopped green onion (3-4 stalks), chopped red onion (about 1/2 cup), one stalk of celery (sliced & diced), 1 tsp garlic salt, 1/2 tsp garlic powder, 1/3 of a RED bell pepper (diced), 5 boiled eggs (i remove my yolks as a personal preference), a couple tablespoons of sweet relish and a couple spoons of mayo as needed to mix. however, i am only guessitmating on how much garlic powder and salt i used, it was about that much really. good luck, let me know if you try it, we all could come up with our own recipe for it. :)

I randomly came across Tuna Twist on a blog today and discovered that it contained soy protein, also known as textured vegetable protein (TVP) which was right on the cusp of becoming common in processed foods in 1976. TVP was approved for school lunches in 1971, but I haven't found any products which were majority TVP like Tuna Twist likely was (it's not the celery or the onion twins that are bulking up the tuna, after all). ADM, one of the largest soybean processors and the first to bring TVP to market, was almost certainly the company that produced the soy protein used in Tuna Twist. I haven't found any information that people with soy allergies had deadly reactions, but Tuna Twist was investigated in August 1976 by LA County Preventative Health Services office after six reports of gastric distress and elevated heart rates, which led several West Coast grocers to stop carrying it. I don't know when Nabisco discontinued it. But it seems to have made a comeback in the 80s? Maybe with the soy protein removed, or with better labeling? Some soy processing methods can cause gastric distress as well, so maybe ADM refined their TVP product. Anyways, for anyone reading this in 2021 and beyond, try adding some finely chopped TVP to your tuna (and all the spices people above have recommended) and see what you think. You can find it at any grocery store; Bob's Red Mill packages it.
