Description
Before this competitor to Pop Tarts was reformulated to be like Pop Tarts, they had a softer crust sprinkled with sugar and more fruit filling than the competitor. They came only four (two packs) to a box compared to Pop Tarts that came six (three packs) to a box. They probably changed to the harder less tasty crust and increased the quantity to six to better compete. The old recipe was of such better quality that it made up for getting fewer Toastettes than Pop Tarts.

Yes, Toastettes were way better than Pop-Tarts, and the filling was more. I grew up with this brand in the seventies, and I have to say the sprinkled sugar on top, had no effect whatsoever on me. I wish they were still being made.

How do we get Nabisco to bring these back??

I LOOOOOVED toastettes!!! I grew up on them, also. They blew Pop-Tarts out of the water! I too would love to see them come back. They were the king of pop-tarts.

I remember buying Nabisco Toastettes at Fed-Mart back in the 70's. They were so much better than pop-tarts. I wish they would would make a come back as well : )~

Toastettes used to come in Strawberry and Apple flavors and were the best out there. I can't believe that Pop Tarts are still around and the Toastettes are gone. They were so much better tasting and because of all the 90's sugar hype,Nabisco pulled them from their product lineup. What a shame!!

I have been searching and searching for my beloved Toastettes. They were my #1 breakfast food. Wal-Mart carried them long long ago. I hadn't given up til now. I can still taste the warm sprinkle sugar as I ate it hot out of the toaster. What memories. Like the VW Beatle, maybe our Toastettes will be brought back.

For some reason I was thinking about how good Toastettes tasted, even though I have not eaten one in years, I still have a yearning for it. I have come across other brands but none come close. Its astounding that Pop tarts won the war.

Somebody please help us! Toastettes must make a comeback.. You dont know how I have been looking and hoping I'd stumble across them somewhere. NABISCO...GET YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME.... EXPOSE OUR KIDS TO THE "REAL DEAL" IN BREAKFAST PASTRIES!

Nabisco Toastettes were simply the best of all the toaster pastries. However, Kellogg's Pop-Tarts along with their mascot, Milton the Toaster, simply was too much of a marketing bonanza to stop or compete with and so Nabisco ended up folding and discontinued it's breakfast product. If any of you would like some answers to your hopes of them bringing them back, then may I suggest you all try and email Nabisco at their own comment section on their website.

I'm with the rest of you all. Toastettes were the very best. I look for them all the time. I thought only certain grocery stores carried them. Did not know they were discontinued. Nabisco surely doesn't know what they did when they quit making them. We need to get them back. Please Nabisco or sell the recipe to someone else.

Toastettes rocked, but they're long gone. Toast'ems (the cheap cousin of Toastettes) can still be found. They're not as good as Toastettes were, but they blow away the flavorless, chewy, funky-flavored Pop-Tarts that line today's grocery stores shelves. ps: stay away from generic pop-tarts--they're even worse!
LuLu - February 10, 2009 - Report this comment
I am so crushed to find out that Toastettes have been discontinued. My favorite flavor was the cinnamon--yummy! That soft, chewy crust--poptarts aren't even in the same catagory. Please, please, Nabisco! I'll buy a ton!

The crust was brown, not white ~ yummy.

My sister and I lived on Toastettes many days having them for breakfast and even a sweet snack in our lunch boxes. One of our favorite things to do was to break off the side pieces pretend they were false teeth. What a great and creative meal!!!

The best ever!! Toastettes should be brought back!!!

I absolutely loved Nabiscos Toastettes. If Nabisco would start making them again, I tuly believe that they would easily take over the toaster pastry market. Kids today have never even heard of Toastettes, but I'm sure they would love them as much as we did.
Melody - March 19, 2009 - Report this comment
The best toaster pastry ever was Nabiscos Toastettes! However, I understand that they were actually pulled from the market due to a lawsuit by a man who claimed a fire in his home was caused by a flaming Toastette in his toaster. Bring back the original Toastette!

I remember getting my first apartment, and my mom filling up my pantry with like 25 boxes of Toastettes Blueberry and Strawberry!!! I lived off of them........and so sad they are no longer around. Seriously S-A-D. :(

I'm gonna start a Facebook group right now!! LOL We can send that to Nabisco! Take THAT - Poptart.

I didn't know there was a support group for Toastettes addicts. My kids love Poptarts, but they don't know any better. PLEASE bring Toastettes back. My fave was strawberry, didn't even need frosting.

I still have a huge craving for Toastettes. I was so upset when NaBisco removed them from their line up. Pop-tarts aren't the same. I would love to melt butter in each hole on a strawberry Toastette after it came out of the toaster. Then I would eat the edges first, followed by middle coated in butter. It just made the day so much better when it started with a Toastette.

Like so many others here, I grew up on these and hated like heck to see these go away!!! Nabisco really screwed up pulling a really pleasing product off the market. My favorites were the strawberry, apple, and cinnamon. Wasn't crazy about the icing versions either, that was their road down the dark side. Quite frankly, Pop Tarts taste like crap. I made Toastettes a regular part of my breakfast menu for years, and when they were pulled, I tried Pop Tart for about a week or two and haven't had a single one since then. Makes you wonder why in the world do they have to screw around with something when they got it right... go figure!!

I didnt know that so many people remembered Toastettes. I was remembering them while I sat here and ate some nasty Pop-tarts because I ran out of snacks at work. Please bring them back. Nothing compares to them....

My favorite pop tart! Still think about them. I wrote Nabisco several years ago to see if they still had them and if so where could I find them. Thier response to me was that they had never heard of a toastettes. Due to that fact, unfortunately the future for toastettes still looks grim.

I am deeply saddened to know that the Toastettes are no longer being made :( I remember having them as a child and if was by far my favorite breakfast. What can we do to bring them back? Why did they quit making them? Its hard to be addicted to something so good and healthy and then it be tragically pulled from the market?????

Toastettes did rock! They were by far the best -- so much better than Pop-Tarts. Kellogg's has sustained the Pop-Tarts brand on its marketability, not the quality of the pastry. There is no comparison. Toastettes had that wonderful flaky, yellow crust, and the crystalline sugar on top was the "icing on the cake"! I can't remember when I last saw them on the shelves but it has been at least 15-20 years. Nabisco should bring these back. Think of all the baby boomers and others close behind that would snatch them up! Kids today have no idea how good Toastettes were!

I worked for Nabisco as a sales rep. in 2000-2001. We were still selling Toastettes at that time. However, the varieties were limited. I recall frosted strawberry, blueberry, and brown sugar cinnamon. I only had one row of each variety, compared to multiple rows of Pop Tarts, on the top shelf of the breakfast pastry section. I agree with many others. These were the best. My father was a sales rep. for Nabisco as well and I practically grew up on these. I also liked the Almost Home cookie line that was available back in the 80's. The cookies all tasted homemade. Like so many other things, companies always discontinue the good stuff. As a child of the 80's, Toastettes rank up there with Sizzlean bacon, Cajun Spice Ruffles, and Kellogg's OJ's cereal. I have written to each of these companies about these products with little success.

I love the strawberry toastettes w/the sugar sprinkles. After toasting them I would put some butter on them and I would be in heaven!!!! I hope they bring them back!!!

Strawberry Toastettes and Saturday Morning Cartoons, I didn't even bother to heat them up. I have been looking for them for years just found this site and learned they are discontinued. I used to break off the edges and pretend they were teeth also.My mom would fix them for me sometime and spread butter on them fresh out of the toaster. Please bring them back!!

Dale is correct, as I remember buying them as late as '02, I think. My girlfriend and her little son were very impressed-they'd never eaten them. When I went to get more a month or two later I couldn't find them anywhere. Sad. Bring them back, PLEASE!

Footnote: Possibly the coolest thing about them was pulling the "zip string" down the side of the envelope to open them. Also if you live near a Winn-Dixie I loved their "Crackin Good" store brand of pop-tarts. Not as good as Toastettes, but better than Kellogg's.

I have read and watched several articles/science shows and it has been proven that "sugar causes increased hyperactivity" is a MYTH!! Come on Nabisco--it's not like other products your company manufactures don't have sugar! Please bring back Toastettes. Mmmmm cherry ones especially!

I just found this website and I thought I was the only one who felt this way about Toastettes. I remember fixing these when I was little, I loved the coarse granular sugar and the crust toasted to a shimmering golden brown. I would eat the edges first then slide the two halves apart and finish them off. PLEASE BRING THESE BACK, THEY ARE SO MUCH BETTER THAN pop-tarts. The sugar in these are no more that the garbage that kellogg's puts in there stuff and that frosting is simply awful. I have not had a decent toaster pastry since you pulled TOASTETTES from the market. PLEASE BRING THEM BACK. IF YOU HAVEN'T NOTICED, YOU HAVE A LOT OF FAITHFUL CUSTOMERS THAT SING TOASTETTES PRAISES.

Oh wow, this page is insane. I thought I was the only one who loved Nabisco Apple Toastettes. They were my favorite food as a kid, without a doubt. Then they disappeared and I thought someday like Howard Hughes I would pay Nabisco to fire up the oven and make a minimum order for me, probably around 50,000 toastettes. (I will happily share if that ever happens) Here's the funny thing. I grew up in NYC where I was well-known through college when they were starting to phase them out. Friends would send them to me when they found them in upstate NY chain stores (around '83). Then they disappeared. :( Then, in 1991, working in LA, I just happened upon some in a 99 cent type store in LA - I just ... saw them there ... and I bought them ALL!! And I ate them for weeks. Who knows if they were years old, they tasted fine. Just as I remembered. I made them last as long as I could and then they were gone again ... I will visit the Nabisco site ...

I have been thinking about Nabisco Toastettes for years. I ate them in the 1970's & 80's. It was so neat to find this page of comments. I didn't realize others remembered them with such fondness as I did. Toastettes were the best. I too loved the sugar sprinkles on top and the elevated pastry around the holes where the strawberry filling peeked through. As much as I dreaded getting ready to catch the bus, Toastettes were a big incentive in getting me up in the morning. Moma couldn't afford to buy treats but she made an exception for the Toastettes whenever she could. Thanks for the memories!!! Please bring them back to our grocery shelves, so I won't have to any longer look at the pop tarts every time I go and think--why can't there be Toastettes on this shelf?!!! It is like settling for a Ford Pinto instead of having the Ford Mustang (in the pastry food world.) lol!

I loved Toastettes and miss them horribly. I've always hated Pop Tarts. Toastettes were golden brown and the filling just the right combo of sweet/tart. Their ingredients weren't as artificial as Pop Tarts either, I think they just had artificial color. I want my Toastettes back!

You aren't the only one who loved Toastettes. I ate them in college and some times they were the only thing I ate all day! I do so miss them! I tried to tell my daughter how awesome they were but unfortunately she'll never know. They were go gooey and I loved the pull string! Nabisco - you messed up! Bring 'em back!!
