Description
Before this competitor to Pop Tarts was reformulated to be like Pop Tarts, they had a softer crust sprinkled with sugar and more fruit filling than the competitor. They came only four (two packs) to a box compared to Pop Tarts that came six (three packs) to a box. They probably changed to the harder less tasty crust and increased the quantity to six to better compete. The old recipe was of such better quality that it made up for getting fewer Toastettes than Pop Tarts.

Yes, Toastettes were way better than Pop-Tarts, and the filling was more. I grew up with this brand in the seventies, and I have to say the sprinkled sugar on top, had no effect whatsoever on me. I wish they were still being made.

I LOOOOOVED toastettes!!! I grew up on them, also. They blew Pop-Tarts out of the water! I too would love to see them come back. They were the king of pop-tarts.

I remember buying Nabisco Toastettes at Fed-Mart back in the 70's. They were so much better than pop-tarts. I wish they would would make a come back as well : )~
Orlando - July 26, 2008 - Report this comment
Toastettes used to come in Strawberry and Apple flavors and were the best out there. I can't believe that Pop Tarts are still around and the Toastettes are gone. They were so much better tasting and because of all the 90's sugar hype,Nabisco pulled them from their product lineup. What a shame!!

I have been searching and searching for my beloved Toastettes. They were my #1 breakfast food. Wal-Mart carried them long long ago. I hadn't given up til now. I can still taste the warm sprinkle sugar as I ate it hot out of the toaster. What memories. Like the VW Beatle, maybe our Toastettes will be brought back.
Marvin Fant - August 20, 2008 - Report this comment
For some reason I was thinking about how good Toastettes tasted, even though I have not eaten one in years, I still have a yearning for it. I have come across other brands but none come close. Its astounding that Pop tarts won the war.

Somebody please help us! Toastettes must make a comeback.. You dont know how I have been looking and hoping I'd stumble across them somewhere. NABISCO...GET YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME.... EXPOSE OUR KIDS TO THE "REAL DEAL" IN BREAKFAST PASTRIES!

Nabisco Toastettes were simply the best of all the toaster pastries. However, Kellogg's Pop-Tarts along with their mascot, Milton the Toaster, simply was too much of a marketing bonanza to stop or compete with and so Nabisco ended up folding and discontinued it's breakfast product. If any of you would like some answers to your hopes of them bringing them back, then may I suggest you all try and email Nabisco at their own comment section on their website.

I'm with the rest of you all. Toastettes were the very best. I look for them all the time. I thought only certain grocery stores carried them. Did not know they were discontinued. Nabisco surely doesn't know what they did when they quit making them. We need to get them back. Please Nabisco or sell the recipe to someone else.

Toastettes rocked, but they're long gone. Toast'ems (the cheap cousin of Toastettes) can still be found. They're not as good as Toastettes were, but they blow away the flavorless, chewy, funky-flavored Pop-Tarts that line today's grocery stores shelves. ps: stay away from generic pop-tarts--they're even worse!
LuLu - February 10, 2009 - Report this comment
I am so crushed to find out that Toastettes have been discontinued. My favorite flavor was the cinnamon--yummy! That soft, chewy crust--poptarts aren't even in the same catagory. Please, please, Nabisco! I'll buy a ton!

My sister and I lived on Toastettes many days having them for breakfast and even a sweet snack in our lunch boxes. One of our favorite things to do was to break off the side pieces pretend they were false teeth. What a great and creative meal!!!

I absolutely loved Nabiscos Toastettes. If Nabisco would start making them again, I tuly believe that they would easily take over the toaster pastry market. Kids today have never even heard of Toastettes, but I'm sure they would love them as much as we did.
Melody - March 19, 2009 - Report this comment
The best toaster pastry ever was Nabiscos Toastettes! However, I understand that they were actually pulled from the market due to a lawsuit by a man who claimed a fire in his home was caused by a flaming Toastette in his toaster. Bring back the original Toastette!

I still have a huge craving for Toastettes. I was so upset when NaBisco removed them from their line up. Pop-tarts aren't the same. I would love to melt butter in each hole on a strawberry Toastette after it came out of the toaster. Then I would eat the edges first, followed by middle coated in butter. It just made the day so much better when it started with a Toastette.
Mike - April 15, 2009 - Report this comment
Like so many others here, I grew up on these and hated like heck to see these go away!!! Nabisco really screwed up pulling a really pleasing product off the market. My favorites were the strawberry, apple, and cinnamon. Wasn't crazy about the icing versions either, that was their road down the dark side. Quite frankly, Pop Tarts taste like crap. I made Toastettes a regular part of my breakfast menu for years, and when they were pulled, I tried Pop Tart for about a week or two and haven't had a single one since then. Makes you wonder why in the world do they have to screw around with something when they got it right... go figure!!

I didnt know that so many people remembered Toastettes. I was remembering them while I sat here and ate some nasty Pop-tarts because I ran out of snacks at work. Please bring them back. Nothing compares to them....

My favorite pop tart! Still think about them. I wrote Nabisco several years ago to see if they still had them and if so where could I find them. Thier response to me was that they had never heard of a toastettes. Due to that fact, unfortunately the future for toastettes still looks grim.

I am deeply saddened to know that the Toastettes are no longer being made :( I remember having them as a child and if was by far my favorite breakfast. What can we do to bring them back? Toastettes did rock! They were by far the best -- so much better than Pop-Tarts. Kellogg's has sustained the Pop-Tarts brand on its marketability, not the quality of the pastry. There is no comparison. Toastettes had that wonderful flaky, yellow crust, and the crystalline sugar on top was the "icing on the cake"! I can't remember when I last saw them on the shelves but it has been at least 15-20 years. Nabisco should bring these back. Think of all the baby boomers and others close behind that would snatch them up! Kids today have no idea how good Toastettes were!

I worked for Nabisco as a sales rep. in 2000-2001. We were still selling Toastettes at that time. However, the varieties were limited. I recall frosted strawberry, blueberry, and brown sugar cinnamon. I only had one row of each variety, compared to multiple rows of Pop Tarts, on the top shelf of the breakfast pastry section. I agree with many others. These were the best. My father was a sales rep. for Nabisco as well and I practically grew up on these. I also liked the Almost Home cookie line that was available back in the 80's. The cookies all tasted homemade. Like so many other things, companies always discontinue the good stuff. As a child of the 80's, Toastettes rank up there with Sizzlean bacon, Cajun Spice Ruffles, and Kellogg's OJ's cereal. I have written to each of these companies about these products with little success.

Dale is correct, as I remember buying them as late as '02, I think. My girlfriend and her little son were very impressed-they'd never eaten them. When I went to get more a month or two later I couldn't find them anywhere. Sad. Bring them back, PLEASE!

Footnote: Possibly the coolest thing about them was pulling the "zip string" down the side of the envelope to open them. Also if you live near a Winn-Dixie I loved their "Crackin Good" store brand of pop-tarts. Not as good as Toastettes, but better than Kellogg's.

I have read and watched several articles/science shows and it has been proven that "sugar causes increased hyperactivity" is a MYTH!! Come on Nabisco--it's not like other products your company manufactures don't have sugar! Please bring back Toastettes. Mmmmm cherry ones especially!

I just found this website and I thought I was the only one who felt this way about Toastettes. I remember fixing these when I was little, I loved the coarse granular sugar and the crust toasted to a shimmering golden brown. I would eat the edges first then slide the two halves apart and finish them off. PLEASE BRING THESE BACK, THEY ARE SO MUCH BETTER THAN pop-tarts. The sugar in these are no more that the garbage that kellogg's puts in there stuff and that frosting is simply awful. I have not had a decent toaster pastry since you pulled TOASTETTES from the market. PLEASE BRING THEM BACK. IF YOU HAVEN'T NOTICED, YOU HAVE A LOT OF FAITHFUL CUSTOMERS THAT SING TOASTETTES PRAISES.

Oh wow, this page is insane. I thought I was the only one who loved Nabisco Apple Toastettes. They were my favorite food as a kid, without a doubt. Then they disappeared and I thought someday like Howard Hughes I would pay Nabisco to fire up the oven and make a minimum order for me, probably around 50,000 toastettes. (I will happily share if that ever happens) Here's the funny thing. I grew up in NYC where I was well-known through college when they were starting to phase them out. Friends would send them to me when they found them in upstate NY chain stores (around '83). Then they disappeared. :( Then, in 1991, working in LA, I just happened upon some in a 99 cent type store in LA - I just ... saw them there ... and I bought them ALL!! And I ate them for weeks. Who knows if they were years old, they tasted fine. Just as I remembered. I made them last as long as I could and then they were gone again ... I will visit the Nabisco site ...

I have been thinking about Nabisco Toastettes for years. I ate them in the 1970's & 80's. It was so neat to find this page of comments. I didn't realize others remembered them with such fondness as I did. Toastettes were the best. I too loved the sugar sprinkles on top and the elevated pastry around the holes where the strawberry filling peeked through. As much as I dreaded getting ready to catch the bus, Toastettes were a big incentive in getting me up in the morning. Moma couldn't afford to buy treats but she made an exception for the Toastettes whenever she could. Thanks for the memories!!! Please bring them back to our grocery shelves, so I won't have to any longer look at the pop tarts every time I go and think--why can't there be Toastettes on this shelf?!!! It is like settling for a Ford Pinto instead of having the Ford Mustang (in the pastry food world.) lol!

I loved Toastettes and miss them horribly. I've always hated Pop Tarts. Toastettes were golden brown and the filling just the right combo of sweet/tart. Their ingredients weren't as artificial as Pop Tarts either, I think they just had artificial color. I want my Toastettes back!

You aren't the only one who loved Toastettes. I ate them in college and some times they were the only thing I ate all day! I do so miss them! I tried to tell my daughter how awesome they were but unfortunately she'll never know. They were go gooey and I loved the pull string! Nabisco - you messed up! Bring 'em back!!

Wow! I'm so excited that I'm not alone anymore! I wasn't even alive in the seventies (I was born in '80), but my sisters and I ate these EVERY DAY when we were growing up. They disappeared from my area around 92-93, except for the Air Force Commissary, which carried them longer. Like many of you, I would put butter on them right when they came out of the toaster, eat the edges, then enjoy the buttery, melty middle. Cherry were my favorite! To this day, I look in EVERY grocery store I'm in just in case there are some lone packs on the shelves. I was surprised by the comment about Winn Dixie's Crackin' Good pastries, because I too have always felt like they were the closest in comparison! Not too long ago, Quaker Oates made a breakfast pastry that came close to the apple toastette, but it too got pulled form the shelves. :( I've e-mailed Nabisco before, but it hasn't worked yet. I will join the Facebook group though!

So I see I'm not the only one who remembers Toastettes! I absolutely loved them. It's been years since I've had one. I grew up in the seventies and they were a staple at my house. Cherry and blueberry were my favorites. We ate them mainly for snacks. I too would heat them in the toaster and put butter on them, then eat the edges first, saving the middle for last! My mom and I were talking not long ago about how we wish they were still made. I was curious so I got on the internet and started looking and that's when I found this site. Wish they would make a comeback!!

Wow! I was craving Toastettes again this morning and decided to finally check the web. I didn't know so many felt the same way. Every flavor was great, we always had Apple and another flavor in the house. I loved the unfrosted/sugar sprinkled top, heating them up and savoring the taste w/ or w/o butter. The filling, the crust, the sprinkled top were always perfection. I am always looking for an alternative to pop-tarts. I agree pop-tarts are nasty horrible. I was one of five children growing up and our mom would always make us toastettes for breakfast. The strawberry kind. She would put (10) in a pan and spread butter over them and broil them in the oven until the butter melted and they were a golden brown...and OMG!!!! They were delicious :) My brothers and I would eat all except the crust and we would wrap it up in a paper towel and put it in the cabinet and it would be a foot race when the bus would drop us off after school. Oh how I miss the good ole days and the best toastettes ever. My children are now 25, 19, and 18 and I have brought them up on Poptarts. Actually...my daughter is know as the "POPTART QUEEN". I just so wish that they could experience the great taste of a good ole strawberry toastette. Now I have grandchildren and they have had the chance to experience Poptarts and I would love for my children and grandchildren (2nd & 3rd generations)to experience the great taste of a toastette.

Yum! I also got online searching for where I could still purchase Toastettes. I am so disappointed that they are no longer made. I totally agree with everyone. Toastettes rocked and we need to get them back! Does anyone remember Kellogg's Danish-Go-Rounds? They also were better than Pop Tarts - the crust was softer, and they came four to a box. I read somewhere that it was because the soft crust crumbled and they fell apart in the toaster that Kellogg's discontinued them. I remember them from the early '70s. They weren't made for long.

Fun site, thanks for the memories! I loved Toastettes as well, particularly the apple and cinnamon flavors. They are sorey missed. I don't even think Kellogg's make apple Pop-tarts, so I have to settle for store-brand which aren't that great. I can't understand why Nabisco discontinued them, and the same goes for WAVERLY crackers! These were a staple on a my dinner table for 4 decades and all of a sudden they disappeared a few years ago. Ironically Keebler evolved their CLUB cracker over the years to be a near-perfect replica of WAVERLY, but not quite. So if Keebler thought WAVERLYs were good enough to copy, why weren't they good enough for Nabisco to keep on the shelves? Such a bummer.

Toastettes were a true "pastry". The crust had actual flavor and texture, and the filling was to die for. Pop Tarts are like two slabs of drywall with just a hint of "somthing" in between. I can't believe Nabisco hasn't brought them back. Of course Pop Tarts were cheapter - the quality was poor. C'mon Nabisco - give the people what they want...an end to war, a better economy, and Toastettes in every kitchen!!!

Ok Nabisco, I caught you. I have always talked about how much I loved Toastettes growing up. They were ten times better than PopTarts, although I still eat tons of PopTarts even now at age 54. I haves wished for years that I would stumble across Toastettes somewhere and I think I have. Nabisco has come out with a product called Newton's Fruit Crisps. When I tasted them a few minutes ago, I said "These are just a stale version on Toastettes.". Check them out. It's as if you left a Toastette on the counter for a few days, cut them into small pieces and packaged them under a new name. Apparently some marketing person or product manager for Nabisco found the Toastettes recipe in an old file and sort of resurrected them. Now, why don't you just do what would make us all happy and bring back Toastettes for real. That would still probably get you a promotion because you can say you listened to the customer and responded.

OMG! I loved reading everyone's Toastette memories! These soft square pastries were my favorite food in the whole entire world! It would be a dream come true if Nabisco brought back these little bits of heaven back to us baby boomers! But, then I just remembered that I'm gluten-free, so my days of Toastettes are nothing more but a true memory! :(

Walmart carries two flavors of Toastettes. I think Brown Sugar Cinnamon and I'm not sure but I think Strawberry is the other one.

Ahhhhhhhh yessss! I'm soooo glad to see that I'm not the only toastettes addict on the planet. You have put a small great smile on my face. Sad to say that I have to substitute these nasty poptatrs because because I can't get my toastettes fix anymore they'll just have to do for now.

I have such a craving for them. They are the best. Nabisco now makes a "Newtons Fruit Crisps" which are like many Toastettes. They are the closest I have found to the real thing. HOWEVER, nothing can replace the Toastette right out of the toaster with butter melted in every hole. Mmmmm! Please bring them back!!!!

Toastettes blows pop tarts out of the water. I would also pay more for toastettes and never but another pop tart again. Nabisco- are you listening??? PLEASE bring these back NOW!!!!!

Toastettes ruled! I thought Pop Tarts were gross and didn't come close at all! Pop Tarts were over-priced and over-rated. Toastettes were also cheaper, my fav were the apple/cinnamon. Bring them back PLEASE!

These were so tasty on cold mornings before school. Better than the Pop Tarts having that hard porcelain glaze on them, but I eventually would switch between Toastettes and the plain (unfrosted) Pop Tarts. I can't believe that Toastettes as well as many other vintage foods would not sell like hotcakes in the Arctic if only the manufacturers would BRING THEM BACK!!!

Toastettes were the best!! I loved the golden crispy crust, lightly sugared topping, and delicious fillings. The lesser amount (4) was worth it due to the quality of flavor compared to Pop Tarts. It is depressing that they are no longer available due to a meger - aargh!

I tried to find the Nabisco pop tart today but soon found out that they were no longer available. I strongly prefer these to the Kellog version. I liked the way that they would brown up nicely in the toaster and the edges would get brown and crunchy. The sugar sprinkled across the top was wonderful. Maybe one day they will bring these back; or maybe another brand will develop something similar.

Unfrosted APPLE for me :) NO CINNAMON!!!!!!!!!! why do they all think we need the frosting, and apples have to have cinnamon? they make plain blueberry,,why not plain apple Toastettes were the best ever, fed them to my kids until 2002 and I grew up on them. Would LOVE to see them back

Toastettes were way better than pop tarts. I wish they would bring them back. I'd pay more for less (quantity) because the quality was so much better.

My family Military family moved to Europe for 10 years. When we moved back to VA my number one food I was looking forward to was strawberry toastetts. I actually went to 7 stores before I was told they were no longer available. I was crushed!! Bring them back please!

The closest thing on the market... I still die a little each time my son asks for pop tarts and I have to tell him about this magical thing that used to be on the shelves in stores next to the pop tarts called "toastettes". Oh the stories I weave about more fruit fillings and tastier crusts and the wonders of sugar sprinkled on the top instead of icing. For anyone else out there who is still in as much pain as I, I have something for you to try... NEWTONS FRUIT CRISPS They are in the cookie aisle next to the Fig Newtons and, while not our beloved toastettes, are the closest thing to them.

I can't believe this page exists. Over the years I have looked for news on Apple Toastettes and found nothing! I still remember the day in 1994 when I walked into a CVS or something and saw several boxes of my beloved Apple Toastettes on a markdown shelf. I bought all of them and couldn't believe it when they tasted the same as I remembered from my childhood. I had the same fantasy as another poster of having them fire up the oven to make a batch for me. It's the number one thing or food from my youth that I would bring back. There is nothing like it on the market, nothing anywhere near as good. Everything else tastes like cardboard next to the memory of an Apple Toastette. I agree that the flavor of the Newton Food Crisps is closest BUT it is still a hollow second place. Wow this page is great. Can anything be done? DO we have any Congresspeople in this group?
