I described Space Food Sticks to hundreds of people and no one remembers them. Thank God someone does. I only hope they didn't "improve" on the old recipe. I remember the peanut butter flavor was gray -- how organic! I don't know of any other food that is gray in color.

Unfortunately, I remember these. They tasted terrible -- kind of like erasers. I think they had an odd texture, too. Sort of grainy yet chewy. All of the boys in my neighborhood loved them because of the connection to the Apollo astronauts. They ate 'em with Tang!

I loved these ! I ate them with tang too !!

My dad had a grocery store (rural Missouri) and every time there was a new item that ended up being a lousy seller, I'd get all I could eat. Sometimes I liked it (lobster was not a hot item in rural MO) and other times, not so much (Space Food Sticks were NASTY - like grainy, weird textured Tootsie Rolls). Don't miss them much.

On Saturday morning, my friend and I would eat chocolate space food sticks and cans of coke. I do agree that they were grainy, weird textured Tootsie Rolls. But, for some reason we always were eating them. Loved the 70's!

Glad these actually existed because it seems that I'm one of the only people in the world that remembers them. I recall a caramel or butterscotch flavor. I've searched the web for info on these before but I always thought they were called Fiddlestix (or some variant of that).
Rob - March 24, 2009 - Report this comment
Yep, butterscotch and caramel too. Chocolate was THE BEST!!! Maybe it was just a guy thing, but these were awesome. I'm glad to see somebody's making them, have to try them & see if they got them right!!!

At first Space Sticks seemed so cool and good tasting. I was really young. Later they seemed unbearably disgusting. The butterscotch was particularly putrid.

Took a Met Rx Choc Chip protein bar on a hike this week and the first bite brought back a taste I hadn't had in 30 years...took me 2 days and a Google search to realize it was Space Bars! What a trip.

Loved everything about the 70's. Loved the space food sticks(only the chocolate).

I thought these were a figment of my imagination! I seem to remember really liking the chocolate. I also remember that my mother refused to buy them, maybe because the peanut butter ones really were gray.
Monty - September 14, 2010 - Report this comment
The peanut butter ones are the ones I remember. They did have an odd flavor to them. Every once in a awhile I will taste some peanut butter snack that reminds me of the flavor.
smeghead - January 24, 2011 - Report this comment
Bought some of the new internet ones..didn't have the shape, texture or taste of the original. They were pretty bad.

I am so glad I found Space Food Sticks at www.spacefoodsticks.com. I bought a box of chocolate and peanut butter ones and the PB are no longer grey, but the chocolate ones still taste like Tootsie Rolls. I tried to get my 7 year old son to try 'em, but the astronaut food does not seem to hold the same fascination for kids in the 2000s that it did for us in the '70s.

Pillsbury's SPACE FOOD STICKS fell short as far as flavor. I know, they weren't meant to be like candy. Once the 1969 moon landing craze faded, so did this odd snack. I have one SPACE FOOD STICK TV ad on video, the Saturday morning Heckle and Jeckle cartoon show (airdate 1/18/70, NBC-TV)

I didn't know they came in anything but chocolate. Thanks for link

Remember them vividly, these still produce a gag reflex when I think of them. Nice idea to eat like the astronauts. But NASTY. GREAT SHAKES AND TANG - MUCH, MUCH BETTER MEMORY

Ate these while listening to Pink Floyd Dark side of the moon! Great munchie food!

My mother bought these only a couple of times. I would eat them faster than she could replenish them. She tried to tell me that they would replace vitamins and not to eat so many at a time. So I assume that she gave up and stopped buying them since I was wasting them. Funny thing is that I tell my 15 year old and 18(yes 18) year old to not eat so many gummy vitamins at a time. They love to turn up the bottle and chug away. And I have threatened to stop buying them too.

I do remember these! saw 'em advertised on TV and on the grocery store shelves but my mom didn't buy stuff like that. She didn't "believe in it". In 1989 when I was on my own in my early 20's I bought them a few times and liked them... but then they disappeared! I think Pillsbury should bring them back. They could create a gluten free and make them less sugar nutritionally complete and market them all over again!

i remember them we always had the peanut butter ones. ick. but we ate them LOL! i didn't know they came in other flavors. i guess my mother only bought the peanut butter ones.

Liked them a LOT but the new "stick" were actually bars; and NOT the same. Sticky/chewy, dense and sickly sweet. not even close to the original. We all, apparently, have different tastes b/c I enjoyed them while others say they didn't...More for me....HaHa.

I had a crush on a girl in 7th grade who introduced me to "Food Sticks" by General Foods. I think they dropped the word "space" by this time (late 70's). Anyway, they were good and I'd like to try them again, but I'd also like to see her again. Where are you, Brynn?

I remember eating these as a child. They seem like a very odd substance now, but as a kid...no problem! I recall the peanut butter flavor the best.

The product I remember was called 'Food Sticks', and their wrapper was brown. There were a bunch of flavours, all the same as these 'Space Food Sticks', but there was no 'space' in the name. I'm quite certain of the name, Mom bought them for me for a few years as none of my siblings liked them. But the box for the chocolate (my favourite, with butterscotch coming in a close second) us a lot of brown on it, and the sticks were individually wrapped in brown tear-away paper with red writing.

I still have a whole box from 1968! I wonder how they'd taste now..

Quest chocolate peanut butter protein bars are the EXACT texture and chew of the chocolate food stick, when I had my first bite it took me straight back in time... Told my husband and he had absolutely no clue what I was talking about!

Can't believe I finally found this on line. I have a snack that I eat sometimes that made me think these so I looked it up. Today they are the texture of Stabilyze bars which are sold as a way to stabilize your blood sugar. I don't remember where I got them but I remember my Mom wouldn't let me have them in my lunch. The new ones come in a different shape and they are mint chocolate flavor.

I remember Food Sticks. I've asked several people if they remember them. Nobody except my sisters remember them. We loved them! I would smoosh the chocolate and peanut butter Food Sticks together to make a fudgy peanut butter flavor. They were grainy and odd, yet delicious! I hope they make them again soon!

I am SO Happy that I found this website! I have been thinking about this candy for years! I As born in 1975 and have the best memories of this yummy treat! I have described it to people throughout the years and nobody ever had a clue of what I was talking about. Now I know the name was Space Sticks....AND I'm not alone! Lol

I remember these! I'm so happy that I can prove that I'm not nuts. Odd how I remember these and can't remember an event that should be far more significant to me.

Wow, These were one of those snacks from my childhood that were so unique, they popped up in my head several times over the years. Could never remember the name but always the flavour. Just finished a Nature Valley Sweet and Salty Peanut bar and the taste of the peanut butter took me back again so I had to search to see if I could find them. ;) Finally I have found it. Cheers

I agree 100% with H. Hall. I tasted a Quest Choc PB bar, and the texture, chew and flavor were so familiar. It took a few minutes to remember that the previous food was in stick form, and shortly after that the food/space sticks popped into my head. Had not even thought about them for over forty years. I found this site trying to see if anyone else had the same experience.

These were good as a snack! Unfortunately, they faded away sometime in the 1980s, as I remember. All good unique food creations invariably disappear after a while, it seems.
