My cousin worked for Frito Lay back then. Unfortunately the only way I remember Prontos is I fed them to my grandmother’s dog who swallowed them and promptly vomited them back up!
Dan - March 07, 2008 - Report this comment
I loved Prontos! My ex-girlfriend's cat vomits Sun Chips!
Will Fix - April 24, 2008 - Report this comment
Man Prontos where Awesome! they where kinda like a cross between a sun chip and freetos, they where wavey squares, very salty
jem - May 23, 2008 - Report this comment
If memory serves me correctly, Prontos are the same as Sun Chips today. I used to crave them when I was pregnant.
David L. - July 22, 2008 - Report this comment
Wow, I was told I was on crack or something for the last 20 years when I asked other people if they remember Prontos. Man alive, those were good. Crunchier than Sun Chips, but I guess Sun Chips will have to do in a pinch.
deb - July 28, 2008 - Report this comment
Wow! I thought I was the only one that remembered eating Prontos in high school!!
Jeanie - July 30, 2008 - Report this comment
I used to love those chips! and they were very crunchy, much crunchier than sun chips. I remember hating the weeks I had to go to the orthodontist and they would tighten the wires and I ended up having to suck on them to soften them up enough to chew them. it was worth it though!
Brian J - October 12, 2008 - Report this comment
I printed checks at that time of my life. I have fond memories of Prontos as I ate them at least 3 times a week with my sandwich at lunch time. Great to know others remember how good they were and how close Sun Chips are the crunch and flavor!
Vick - November 06, 2008 - Report this comment
I remember buying Prontos on the way home from Middle School in the 70's. I would save my last 25 or 30 cents for a bag. I was fond of the salty, peppery taste and was disappointed when they stopped selling them. Never tried Sun Chips but I will try them today.

PRONTOS ROCKED! EXPERIENCED DEJA VU AFTER EATING SUNCHIPS. NOBODY REMEMBERED THE ORANGE BAG WITH A CLEAR WINDOW TO VIEW THE YUMMY, CRUNCHY SNACK INSIDE:}

I used to love dipping them in bean dip!!! They are exactly like SunChips!

I remember the Prontos, but I remember them looking like a square piece of bacon and having a bacon flavor, am I the only one who remembers this?
KP - March 29, 2009 - Report this comment
Yes! I remember Prontos. I love Sun Chips, but they are not quite the same. I wish they were still available
met - April 17, 2009 - Report this comment
I thought I was going crazy, no one knew what I was talking about when I said Prontos. I use to buy tham all the time in the PX. Sun Chips are close, but not the same
Stevo - May 18, 2009 - Report this comment
Yah, we need to get a pi up of the bag. I think it was red! I remember them being just like regular Sun Chips only saltier!

I always wondered why they quit selling Prontos, yet happy to have Sun Chips as a replacement.

We loved Prontos as kids. My sister doesn't remember them. I think they're similar to SunChips.

It's really great that many people remember ''pronto's'', but people must have forgotten that they looked alot like and tasted alot like BACON as well.

Yep! Everytime I eat a modern day Sun Chip, the taste/smell/etc gives me a flashback to the old Prontos chips that I used to wash down with a can of "Rondo - The Thirst Crusher", the citrus soda. Remember the commercial with the "macho hand" that crushed the can?! Ha.
Linda - May 14, 2010 - Report this comment
Wow, great to see other people appreciated my favorite chips. We used to have them with Tab. I don't think Sun Chips are nearly as good. Prontos were thicker and had less of an aftertaste. Let's start a crusade to bring back Prontos!!!! Viva El Prontos!!! :)

Should have written Viva Los Prontos...I don't know Spanish, but it sounded good.

THANK YOU!!!! I was racking my brain over the last few years about these chips. They were my favorite. We had them every Friday night when my parents went bowling and no one could seem to remember them!
millron - September 27, 2010 - Report this comment
Prontos were an all-wheat, whole-grain chip. Sun Chips have other grains, including oats and corn in them. Sun Chips are similar in taste but to those of you commented about the crunchiness, the Pronto was crunchier. The shape is identical, but Prontos were thicker, giving them more crunch.
linda dee - October 17, 2010 - Report this comment
i guess i'm one of the few who absolutely hated prontos. the first and only time i tasted them i thought i'd accidentally picked up a feedbag! yuk!
Harold - November 19, 2010 - Report this comment
Prontos were great. My brother and I would get a couple of bags a week and if they made it through the day it was a miracle. To me Sun chips taste nothing like them. Prontos had a buttery taste to them. Wise came out with a chip years ago that was close. It would be great if Lays brought them back for a couple of months to see if they would catch on with this generation.
Scott - June 09, 2011 - Report this comment
I loved Prontos!!! They had maybe a little sweeter taste or something, definitely more flavor than Sun Chips, but yes very similar, and I'm glad there are at least Sun Chips to remind me. And I also remember the striped bacon chips that came out shortly after too. I had been straining my brain to think what those were called, but perhaps they were a bacon flavored Prontos...
Pronto Man - June 15, 2011 - Report this comment
Sure I remember Prontos! I was a Frito-Lay salesman in the seventies. Nobody ever bought them so I'd have to stale them out. Made great hog feed!. The square striped snack that tasted like bacon was called Bakon-Nips. Anyone remember them? Made a great BLT. Remember Fantastix?
Kay - June 20, 2011 - Report this comment
Prontos were not bacon flavored, they were multi grain almost like Sun Chips. There was a bacon chip back in the 70s too but it was not Prontos.
kathy huskins - July 02, 2011 - Report this comment
Got hooked on Prontos as a kid and then they snatched them off the market. Guess they were ahead of their time as people weren't very ready for more healthy snacks in the seventies. I also have very fond memories of Adam's ice cream gum. Anybody remember that?

Yes, I loved Prontos. I got a lot of crazy looks when I mentioned them to friends. Glad to see others liked and miss them as much as I do. And bring back the Willie Wonka Super Scrunch Bar!!!

I herd that Prontos were a processed wood product! It's amazing what you can do with wood chips, corn syrup, fructose and salt. The FDA was not amused and axed them!

I ask everyone and no one remembers them, finally people who loved them too! I ate them with Pepsi Light, the Pepsi with lemon. Also I liked Dr. pepper in the tall glass bottles.

I remember them being extremely salty, too. Came and went like all the cool stuff from those days.

I wish they would make them again, maybe as super sun chips. Sun chips are close, but something is just missing.

I was born in 1968, so memory of Prontos chips might be a little hazy. What I do remember is they were only out from maybe 1975 to 1977. And the commercial had a rather nasal narrator saying "people eat them up so fast". But OMG, they were SO good! They were better than Sunchips, definitely tastier and crunchier. And I specifically remember BHA and BHT being on the ingredients list on the back, preservatives that are considered poison today. Now find an old commercial for YouTube!

I loved Prontos chips. They were wonderful.

Jon I agree better than sun chips and were thinner or somehing. Best chip ever!! dig out the recipe and sell 'em frito lay!!!

THe commercial had Dub Taylor saying" They call 'em Prontos 'cause you eat 'em so fast"! I think they must have only been in test markets and never got released nationally.

Like the rest of you, I loved these things and folks look at me like I'm nuts when I tell them about eating them. When I walked into a convenience store YEARS later and saw the release of Sun Chips, I knew what they were trying to recreate...I ate 3 bags that weekend. They're pretty close, IMHO. I eat the plain ones only and dip them in French Onion dip.

You may be interested to know that the chip is still sold in France but under another name. Smaller bags but the same taste. My exwife would buy my a bunch of those bags when she went to see her relatives.

Prontos were never bacon flavored, you few who said that are thinking of Bacon Nips or something like that. My Dad worked for Frito Lay in the 70s and 80s. I know my Lay's chips. lol

Been thinking about Prontos for years. They were promoted as a cross between a potato chip and a corn chip. Not sure if those were the actual ingredients. Sun Chips are similar in taste and of course in waviness. But alas, not the same. Time to bring back the Prontos!

Does anyone have a photo of a bag of Prontos? I remember these as a kid in the late 70's. They were a very short-lived product where I lived in the South, but I remember I loved them and my mom got them for me often. I'd love to see a photo of the bag if anyone runs across a pic on the internet.

Ahh Yes... Prontos wavy corn-like chips in the small window bag! I ate these one time in suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin sometime in spring or summer of 1977. All I can say is that these tasted just alright but the smell from the bag was like someone farted and then bagged this product for sale. No love for this product that soon disappeared from our area store sometime in 1977.

Pronto Chips got me a butt whipping! My mom would go to one store for a sale on milk, another store for a meat sale, and so-on. Mom bought me Prontos and I carried the open bag into the next store the manager called me thief. Mom had to show him the receipt from the other store. Mom beat me from that store parking lot all the way home.

I loved PRONTOS! I was in a Seattle Catholic High School, when these were on the market. I used eat these in the morning before school, a cheap 'healthy ' snack. Sunchips are darn close, but I really miss thosE PRONTOS.

I remember those and the bag they came in. I was in High School. I was always a chip hound and those were one of my favorites! Today's Sun Chips are about as close as I can get to them. Seems like a lot of today's chip products don't taste the same as they used to back then.

I am so glad to read on here that others were being called loony tunes about the Pronto's question! I loved them and yes Sun Chips are a close rendition, but I too remember the Pronto's chip being crispier!

Worked at YOUNG & RUBICAM, the ad agency that had PRONTOS assignment. LOVED Prontos. Unfortunately, people didn't like HEALTHY snack foods.

I am glad I am NOT the only one who remembers Prontos from the 1970s :) I used to get up on Saturday mornings early to watch TV and sit in front of the TV eating Prontos while watching "Mystery Island" or "Space Academy" / "Jason Of Star Command"
Rob Lambert - August 14, 2019 - Report this comment
Prontos by Frito-Lay, 1975-83. In a "Welcome Back, Kotter" comic book, the 1077 CBS fall Saturday lineup. "The Skate Birds" with "Mystery Island" (Dr. Strange and Pops the robot) and "3 Robonic Stooges" cartoons. "Space Academy" with Jonathon Harris, his second series after "Lost In Space" (his first was "Uncle Croc's Block" with Charles Nelson Reilly). 1977 also had forgettable shows like "Wacko" and "What's New, Mister Magoo?" By then, the "Bugs Bunny-Road Runner Hour" was so chopped up (simulated violence) that they were no longer funny to watch.

My best friend and I LOVED Prontos in the 70s. We'd go to our local grocery store and have them make us bologna sandwiches, then we'd buy a large bag of Prontos to eat, and Big Reds to drink, and go cruising. Lol Nobody else remembers Prontos. My best friend and I use to joke that they took them off the market because they put something in them that was habit forming, because once we started eating them we didn't stop until the whole bag was gone. Lol The original Sun Chips are the closest, but they still don't taste as good as Prontos did.

Prontos sent sample bags in the mail to my neighborhood in San Jose CA. Me and a couple other kids stole them out of all the mailboxes that we found them in that day. We liked them, especially for free. I did buy them later too. I jokingly accept blame for them failing by ruining the mail campaign. As soon as I tried Sunchips I thought of Prontos.

We well fondly remember Prontos ca. 1977-1978 while residing in Keene, Texas and were disappointed when we could find them no longer at the grocery store. While we don’t have as colorful an experience to share as a number of posts here, we certainly bought lots of them—-healthy, great taste and novel shape. In 1991, we were having dinner at someone’s house and were startled and gleefully surprised to see a bowl of them served at the table. We couldn’t believe our eyes. After first taste, we immediately called them Prontos! The hosts corrected us, saying they were Sun chips and at our request, they showed us the bag. We depleted the bowl’s contents and seconds. Next day we went in search at our local grocer, picked up a bag to sample and were gloriously reunited with our favorite chip of yesteryear.

Yep, Prontos, used to eat a whole bag in one sitting as a kid back in the 70s. Then POOF, they no longer made them. Sun Chips are close but not the same. Also, they never tasted like bacon and I love anything bacon. I would have remembered if they did.

I started working at Frito-Lay in 1976 in Rancho Cucamonga. Prontos were made there until discontinued. I worked with a young 19 year old man named Forest who lost his life falling into a ribbon blender on the Pronto chip line. It was his fault for tying down the micro switches while cleaning it. I remember eating Prontos just out of the salt tumbler and they were tasty.
