The best tasting cereal was the early 1960's recipe for Post Oat Flakes, prior to Post reformulating the recipe as Post Fortified Oatflakes.

OMG someone else who ate these! My brother and I loved this cereal. Another of the "why did they stop making it" questions.

I LOVE THIS CEREAL! My sister and I used to eat this for dessert! I have looked for this cereal for a long time. Sadly, it isn't to be found. Why? I wish Post would reissue this again.

I thought I was the only person in the world that loved this cereal too. I agree bring back Oat Flakes!!! I get Oat Flakes Flashbacks every now and then. Maybe we need to start a Oak withdrawl user group?

I too miss Fortified Oat Flakes. Everytime I'm in the cereal isle, I look in the hopes of finding them. I loved them as a kid and an adult. I have tried all the other oat flake type cereals, they taste NOTHING like Fortified Oat Flakes. I have thrown countless full boxes of imposters away. I rarely ate any other cereal if I didn't have to. I now almost never eat cereal now, the occasional Cheerio, but it has to have a banana on it to give it some flavor!!
Ali - December 22, 2008 - Report this comment
Try Whole Foods 365 brand of Oat Flakes. Tastes exactly how I remember Post's Fortified Oat Flakes only the 365 brand is a little thicker (crunchier). Of course it's been 25-30 years since I've eaten FOF and I've tried to match that flavor for a long time. I think I've done it with the Whole Foods brand.

I too thought that Oat Flakes was the best cereal ever. I have been looking for them all over, and feel that the new oat cereals are just the same. I'm glad to see others felt the same way. What would it take for Post (or someone else) to make them again?

I'm an RN who works in Battle Creek, MI (Kellogg's headquarters). Somehow we got into a discussion one day about should have seen the look on one of the patient's face (a former Kellogg executive) when I mentioned that my favorite cereal of all time was "Post" Fortified Oat Flakes. Anyway, I'm all for a letter-writing campaign to bring them back. There's nothing like them. I'll try the Whole Foods 365 suggestion, too, but I'm not so sure anything could ever be as good as the real thing!
colleen - October 18, 2009 - Report this comment
Maggie - if you're still there- what was the look on the executive's face? Surprise? Dismay? Did he even know the product? I've actually contact the corporation but I keep getting shuffled to cs drones that just answer with boilerplate about discontinued products. Frustrating.

The best cereal ever made -- I've eaten cereal practically every day of my life and I have never had a better one than Post Fortified Oat Flakes. I started eating them as a child in the '60s and was thrilled when they came back during the "oat bran craze" -- I'd love another shot at them!

Try contacting, a self-advertising purveyor of hard to find items. Maybe if enough people request Fortified Oat Flakes, they will be able to convince Post to make a batch for us die-hard lovers of this fabulous tasting cereal!

Perhaps Post would bring the treasured flake back under another name and marketing scheme. Let's help them move the process with suggestions: CholesterOs? Great Lakes Flakes? Nutriflakes? WholeOats? For the kids: butterfries, snowflakes, Leaves, sweetsie flakes, Sparkles, sugar snackums? Join the fun and take some credit when this sacred cereal revives!!! Let's hear those ideas!

How about the name: "Honey Bunches of Oats: Just Oat Flakes". Post is kind of lazy. Just look at all of the variations on Honey Bunches of Oats. It shows no creativity at all. They even tried bringing back several old cereals under the banner of Post Toasties. To me, Post Toasties were corn flakes, and nothing else. They are bastardizing the name.

When my mother used to let me do the family grocery shopping for her, I was allowed to get Post Oat Flakes instead of Kellogg's Corn Flakes. Oh how happy my brother and sister and I were -- but only until the next week. We could NEVER get enough. I SWORE I buy "zillions" when I "grew up" but Post, silly Post, stopped making them. Why don't they (or whichever company now owns Post) WISE UP now? Please? Please????

You would that with all the well-documented and well-marketed health benefits of oats and oatmeal, Post would be savvy enough to reintroduce Post Fortified Oat Flakes. That cereal was always my #1 favorite. At least my #2 hasn't left the market: Quaker's Life cereal. ("He likes it! Hey, Mikey!")
BenW - September 14, 2011 - Report this comment
I agree I would love to eat them again as well. I'm glad to see I'm not alone! Bet they had to do away with them because they had an addictive additive and they worried the food laws would change uncovering Posts secret. :) Anyone know what stores carry the Whole Foods 365 brand of Oat Flakes? I haven't seen them. Thanks

They were my absolute favorite cereal ever! I loved to let them get soggy in the milk! Has anyone had any luck finding them anywhere? In the meantime, I guess I'll try the Nature's Path Oaty Bites or the Whole Foods 365....or if anyone has other suggestions I'd love to know!

I have contacted Post so many times about this and like others above, just get the old "sorry we have no plans to bring it back, but please try some of our other wonderful cereals." I adored Post Fortified Oat Flakes and have thrown away so many other boxes of wannabes with the hope of finding something even remotely like them. I can't understand why Post hasn't seen ALL of the sites about this's insane how many people loved it! It seems a shame they couldn't just give it a shot and then if it didn't sell, ok..but I can guarantee it would. Especially if they marketed it correctly and billed it as a health food..which is was!! C'mon Post, WAKE UP!!

My whole family loved Post Fortified Oat Flakes! Grandparents to us kids! It was the main cereal in all of our cupboards. I lost track of them for awhile, then I found a store that still stocked them. Then the cereal disappeared! I too just emailed Post to let them know that another great fan of PFO wants them brought back!! Dump a cereal in manufacture now if you have to! Glad to see I'm not the only one missing the unique taste of this cereal. Even as a child, it was my favorite cereal, over all the other "kids" cereals out there. PLEASE BRING THEM BACK!!!!

I am a Canadian, who, as a child, lived in the U.S. for a couple of years in the 60's. We LOVED Fortified Oat Flakes!! When we moved back to Ontario we realized we couldn't buy that cereal here. Friends from the U.S. would visit us from time to time and would bring us boxes and boxes of that cereal! There's no other like it! Even though I am now middle-aged, I still look for that cereal whenever I go cross-border shopping!

We loved Post's Fortified Oak Flake cereal growing up in the late 1960's. Much later, I could buy them in Food For Less Grocery Store in North Little Rock, Arkansas in the mid-1980's. I used to buy them by the case from the store manager, and ship them to my mother and sister in Houston! I would scream for joy if Post would bring them back---just as they were with no embellishments. That cereal was wonderful just a bit soggy with milk, and it made the left over milk delicious. We made cookies from the recipe on the box, too. Please, Post cereals! Hear our cry. It was the best cereal ever! Bring it to Sugar Land, Texas!

OMG - my entire family absolutely LOVED this cereal! POST - please (even if you're not the same Post of the past), find a way to bring this cereal back. It was so great. Just the flakes, nothing else in them. Just plain flakes. It was great. Anyone who I have EVER asked about this cereal that is old enough to know about it loved it. I've yet to find anyone who knows about this cereal say that they did NOT like it.

What can we do to get Post to make Oat Flakes again? Does anyone know of a cereal that tastes simliar to it? I've tried several imitation ones and they are nothing like Oat Flakes. If Wheaties would make them and put it in a blue box and call it OATIES, that would be wonderful.

Fortified oatflakes were the best cereal ever made. Just bring them back post and then adv. them telling people to try them. The kids today are missing out on what we experienced eating this cereal.
Bill - February 21, 2013 - Report this comment
Yeah, it was my favorite cereal too. I have been missing them ever since they were discontinued. I have to assume that Post thought they were not making enough money from them and that is why they were discontinued. But, I really can't see that justification. I think they just didn't market them well. I'm not sure the people who run Post now even know what they were or how to make them anymore. I haven't completely given up hope, but they have been gone for it seems like at least 20 years.
Fan - September 10, 2013 - Report this comment
I, too, miss the Oat Flakes. They, far and away, were the best oat cereal made, then and now. I've tried all the varieties on the market today and none matches the flavor of Post Oat Flakes. Too bad Post discontinued this product as it would make them a small fortune today with the oat health craze. In fact, you'd think they would have considered bringing the cereal back by now!

Fan - October 26, 2014 - Report this comment
It sounded ridiculous back then and it still sounds ridiculous today but Post was forced to stop making the original Oat Flakes because part of the advertisement claim was that Oat Flakes were good for your heart. Either the court or FDA said that if it was good for your heart it was a drug because only drugs heal. Post is not a drug company so they couldn't make Oat Flakes.

Best cereal I ever tasted - was always a treat when Mom bought them. When my own adult life began I continued buying them. We moved to a small town and at about that same time they disappeared. I did not realize they were gone for good. I have searched and wished for these for years. My Dad was a foreman at Post 1963-1969 at 29 Building, then an Industrial Engineer at Carton & Container of Post. Post, bring these Fortified Oat flakes back!!!

POST really dropped the ball when they allowed “Fortified Oat Flakes” to fail. There is nothing like them in flavor and texture. They are simply GOOD! I am surprised that such a great product would be discontinued. The fact that most everyone I speak to about POST “Fortified Oat Flacks”, they don’t know what I am talking about. This tells me that its not the product that failed, but the marketing was inadequate. The name “Fortified Oat Flakes” does not do the product justice. POST needs to assign the project of bringing this GREAT cereal back to the store shelves to someone in their Marketing Department. They might rename it to make it more appealing. Once it is tasted I can see the customer buying it repeatedly. I don’t think POST realized that their “Fortified Oat Flakes” were the best tasting in the world. I hate to see them experiment with new cereals and try to make a HIT cereal with mixed nuts and dried clumps of, “who know what” when the best tasting oat flakes are under their noses the whole time. BRING THEM BACK! PLEASE. Jeff W.
