Description
I don't know who made it; It came in a small tin/aluminum can with a pop-top lid like some puddings of the same time: 1970's. One would spread it on a slice of bread and then broil the whole thing fo rabout a minute or two. When it was done, it would taste like a slice of pizza. Weird.

I keep wondering about that pizza spread too! But no one I know remembers anything about it, even though at home we had it for lunch every other day, it seemed like. What WAS that stuff?? Gosh, it was good!

I remember pizza spread. I used to beg my mother for it every day. I wish they would start making it again. It was the best lunch/snack. Nobody I know remembers it either...maybe they had boring ham and cheese sandwiches for lunch!

I remember a version made by Kraft called Pizza Quick. It came in a jar. It contained a ton of parmesan cheese and all you had to do was spread it on a piece of toast. As pathetic as it sounds, I still look for it in supermarkets. One day I was rushing through a store and thought I saw it out of the corner of my eye. Then, weeks later when I realized what I thought I found, I couldn't remember what store it was, so did a back-track to every supermarket I thought I'd been to in the past few weeks. (Sigh), I never found it. I even checked on Kraft's website and it doesn't appear they make it anymore. Maybe it was all wishful thinking. But, that stuff was so good!

Al R. - January 26, 2011 - Report this comment
It was made by Libby's. I remember the cheese pizza spread being tasty, and the little bits of sausage in the sausage pizza spread. We'd spread it on toast, top with parmesan and broil it for a minute.

I remember that stuff from the early 80's. I accidentally found a cheap substitute a few years back. I mixed Old el Passo mild salsa with Cheeze Whiz. The taste was similar to my memories of it but I'm not quite sure. You're welcome to try! :o)

Holy crap!! I thought I was the only one that remeberd this stuff,i am 40 now and every so often i have this conversation with my parents and sister and they have no clue what im talking about...Orangy/brown small tin can with a pop up type of lid...brownishh spread with chunks of peperoni of sort...did not look good at all(probly the source of its demise)...spread on toast, pop it in the toaster oven on grill... 2 minutes or so and man that stuff was tasty. The thing about this that makes it memorable for me was that you toast the bread, spread the spread and re toast it...how could anybody forget somthing like that......dam,now im hungry! :o(

I asked someone the other day if they remember pizza spread a red can thicker than a can of tuna and put it on toast it was awesome...there were also some kind of pillsbury pizza melts, round pieces of cheese with little pieces of pepperoni in it and you put it on english muffins and toasted them

libbys libbys libbys, spread and heat, pizza pizza pizza!!!! that was the commercial jingle I recall. I believe I spread that stuff on bays english muffins. I also believe contadina still makes pizza sauce in a small can, just add parmesan and or a little mozzarella on toast or whatever...

Yes, Libby's did make a pizza spread that came in a small can with a yellow/orange lid. I still have one of the old cans (empty of course) minus the lable but, with the lid. I found it a while back with some pennies in it. I guess I used one as a piggy bank when I finished it. It brought back some good memories. I loved that stuff!

My longing for that pizza spread has haunted me again and again over the years. The taste is still embedded in my memory. Something about it has nibbled at my mind for about 30 years, to the point where I sat down here tonight to search for any information about it. Glad to see that there are many other fans, and that I am not the only one the misses and remembers that wonderful stuff. It had a unique flavour that was so processed and delicious! Good memories of '70s/'80s TV afternoons and pizza spread, fresh out of the oven. Mmmmm....

As I recall Pizza Spread was made by Paris Pate. It was fantastic. It was pepperoni-type meat, cheese and tomato sauce in a can and it was awesome. Spread on bread, a few minutes under the broiler and you were good to go. I know it sounds kind of gross (remember Steve Martin talked about "pizza in a cup" in a movie?) but it was delicious. Wish they still made it. Glad to discover others remember it

Spread and Heat Pizza was awesome. I would place a slice of Munster cheese over the spread, then heat it. I miss the excellent taste and wish it was still made. This is the reason I am on this site. I googled Spread and Heat Pizza.

It was so neat reading all these posts! We were seven kids in the 70's and Mom used to make this for lunch almost every day if we wanted it. I can't remember name either. I think the can was shaped much like a can in which jalapenos are sold with pull top lid! That stuff had a distinct taste and I can still taste it. Wish I remembered the name...

I love that everyone remembers that "small" pull top orange n brown can, me too. About the size of what a fancy feast cat food can is now. I have been googling for a pic of it for hours now, putting in all diff' search words. The closest I got was a guy on youtube who had just a label, but it was called Pizza Magic from ChefBoyrdee. I can't believe there is not a pic to be found when so many people remember it.Not even in Libby's 70's canned foods..gonna keep looking so I can send to my brother & freak him out. Pls share if anyone finds something ,thanks

Found at article with a knock-off recipe for Libby's Spread n' Heat Pizza. Note: I have not made this recipe and cannot vouch for how close it is to the original. If someone tries it, let us know! CLIPPED FROM Detroit Free Press, Detroit, Michigan 24 Sep 1975, Page 26 Spread the Flavor Another convenience item has popped onto Detroit food shelves: It's a pizza flavored spread to use on bread or Eaglish muffins for individual-sized pizzas. Called ‘Spread and Heat Pizza” the product is put out by Libby, McNeill & Libby in small five-ounce containers with enough spread for seven slices of toast. It’s a good item to use when in a quandry for appetizers for many guests, but it retails for about 45 cents — rather expensive for only seven slices of toast. There are three types — green pepper and onion, cheese, or sausage flavor — all artificially flavored. The Tower Kitchen threw together-a similar product that could be stored in the refrigcrator for a few weeks and would cost half as much: Pizza Spread In small saucepan combine one-half teaspoon cornstarch with a small amount of tomato sauce from an eight-ounce cat unfit smooth. Stir in remaining tomato sauce along with three tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese, one-half teaspoon salt or to taste, and one-fourth teaspoon each oregano, basil and sugar. Cook over low heat until bubbly and slightly thickened, about five minutes. Pour into jar or container and refrigerate. Makes enough spread for about 16 slices of bread or English muffins. Spread about one tablespoon pizza spread on bread. Place about six inches from broiler. Broil about six minutes, or until bubbly. For other flavors, sprinkle on cooked sausage, ham, green pepper, onion, or mushrooms.

I remember this stuff and I loved it. I grew up in the 70's myself and some people in my age group (49) remembered it to. I actually have a container still from it, my mom kept her sewing buttons in it,just the lid and aluminum can. Thanks all for commenting on my trip through memory lane.

Libby’s Spread ‘n Heat Pizza The “Pizza” in the name of this product was a bit misleading; Libby’s Spread ‘n Heat was simply a flavored sauce sold in a smallish can. You had to provide the bread and the cheese. And the cooking process was a little more involved than the standard heat-and-serve convenience food: You first toasted a slice of bread (or an English muffin, if you liked a thicker crust) in the toaster, then slathered on the Libby’s Spread. Next you sprinkled the cheese of your choice on top and popped it into the toaster oven for another two or so minutes. But back in 1975 the folks at Libby’s were betting that consumers would prefer waiting three minutes for a slice of pizza bread versus the 30 minutes it took for a frozen pizza to cook. Libby’s wasn’t wrong with its prediction that consumers would buy a product that allowed them to concoct a reasonable facsimile of pizza out of a hamburger bun (Ragu's Pizza Quick Sauce would take off in the years to come), but for some reason the sauce never took off

Thank you to Mike for remembering Spread A Pizza. I write poetry and recently made a reference to Spread A Pizza in my poem. No one in my writing group had heard of it. I couldn’t find anything online about it, but now I have the confidence to keep it in the poem. That stuff was addictive. I ate it every day for a year on English muffins when I was a kid.

Used to get a pizza spread sold by Marshall Fields in Chicago in the 60-70’s. Anyone know the name. One of those things I’ll never forget the taste. Spread it on white bread. No meat or cheese just an orange color spreading
