Description
it was a chewy mint chocolate that was still around in the 80's. I remember the wrapper being green and red with wiggly stripes.I loved the candy bar. I'm not sure if it was a product of Lowney. I'd just love to have it though.

I remember this as a kid...5cents for a bar, one of the best...where has it gone?
princejellyfish - January 23, 2009 - Report this comment
The problem with Pepchew, was that even at room temp., if you streached the taffy out too far, the chocolate coating would all fall off! We would combat that by putting our's in the freezer for thirty minutes to make the taffy more ridged (it still melted in your mouth)
Kait - March 30, 2009 - Report this comment
I was reminiscing about these bars on the weekend. Still miss them. Really miss that 5 cent price tag.

How was the chocolate falling off a problem?? Eat the falling off chocolate...lol, silly children. Anyone remember those cards with the rock hard stick of gum and the collector stickers....I think they were from Cracked or Mad....they were joke advertisements like "Meanbonnet margerine" instead of Bluebonnet margerine etc. We use to put the stickers on our lunch boxes.

Sheila... I think you are thinking of "wacky packages" i loved them and still do...they have a newer version called "silly supermarket" hope that helps :)

Pep Chew bars were the best ever. Why doesn't some candy company bring these back? There's enough baby boomers out there that a company could make a fortune. Obviously, the price tag would need to go up, but I'd still buy them.
Dar - March 08, 2013 - Report this comment
I have read on other sites that they are no longer manufactured, so no luck in finding them. I too would buy them, they were my favorite childhood memory. And the falling chocolate was the best part. Trying to catch it in your mouth as you bit the bar.
Wanda - August 28, 2013 - Report this comment
I remember this candy bar from my own childhood in the 1960's to the early 1970's. My Mom & Dad would make a semi annually trips to Canada to buy 5-6 boxes each visit for all of the kids. Doled out once a week as treats. Now can't find this awesome candy bar anywhere.

I also loved the pep chew and wondered who made it so I could write to them and ask what the h#@@% happened to it lol..and yes they were wacky packages .I still have some and some of the new ones...
Funpig - October 23, 2013 - Report this comment
Pep Chew was made by Paulin's. I searched a few times on the Internet over the years, but they are out of business. I remember slamming them on the table to break it into bite size pieces and letting it melt in my mouth. Lost a couple of baby teeth trying to chew it too fast.
Donna - November 04, 2013 - Report this comment
I purchased them a few years back from a local candy shop and the gal told me that they were only produced one time a year in the mini size.. I recently spoke with another gal from a different candy shop and she told me that they stopped manufacturing them completely..somebody has a bazillion dollar recipe sitting in their recipe book.. :(

Also Edmonton, late 60's, pep chew at the pool concession. yeah, it stretched and the chocolate would fall off. Loved it. Great days
Ken Shabby - June 15, 2014 - Report this comment
funny reading all the comments, like smacking it on the table, catching all the chocolate flakes that break off as you wrestle with biting off a piece - this kid might possibly drooled once or twice trying to tear off a piece lol. Sad that the red, green and white wrapper (even a photo!) seems irretrievable. Cool "5 cents" on the wrapper. Always thought it was the best bang for the buy. Hopefully some enterprising freak will crawl out of the woodwork and revive it, somehow, but I wouldn't put money on it. :(
Ande - July 22, 2014 - Report this comment
I LOVED those and remember the red, green and white wrapper very well. I still look for them in the "retro" candy stores, but never see them and ask about them. Sometimes I just get a blank look, so obviously they're not available. Lots of "retro" tings are being revived, why not this? I think there's a market for this, eh?
SarahFriesen - August 08, 2014 - Report this comment
I still find pep chew at specialty stores. They import it from the UK
Marilyn - November 24, 2014 - Report this comment
I have looked in every candy store for the Pep Chew bar. It was the best, especially the price. Us kids could afford it and it would last longer than a regular choc bar. Thought Cracker Barrel would have it but no such luck. I would definitely buy if someone came out with it! Sarah Friesen would love or you to name the specialty stores.

They were the most popular candy bar when I was growing up in Edmonton. I would always freeze them and let them melt in my mouth. Wow I can still taste them now. Maybe we should boycott all the bar companies till one of them brings it back.

I have been looking for a picture of Pep Chew because I knew they weren't a figment of my imagination. I would ask people if they remember and they would be dumbfounded, didn't recall. I would describe the wrapper, and they wouldn't remember. Finding this link has been great! If only we could have a picture of the Pep Chew. I too can still taste them :) and miss them so very much, they were my favourite!

Our family operated a small grocery store in Canada for over 30 years and remember the pepchew bar very well. Back in the 60's it was one of our best sellers along with OHenry and Cuban lunch. both Cuban lunch and pepchew were both made by paulins. Pepchew was delisted before Paulins went out of business so I am not sure why it was discontinued. I am a Lawyer now but I still miss those good old days hanging out with my friends drinking Coca Cola and eating pepchew.

I have been trying to find an image of the Pep Chew for a couple of years. Every time I watch the New Jersey Devils I think about Pep Chews because the uniforms totally remind me of the packaging! Does anyone remember the name of a chocolate bar from that time period - it was layers of wafers and creamy filling (like a Snack Bar perhaps) but it had a slightly cinnamon flavor and was coated with white chocolate and a drizle of pink. I think the packaging was clear cellophane so you could see the bar through the package. It might have been made by Paulins as well.
Candyman - January 02, 2017 - Report this comment
Shannon, happy new year, I think the bar your thinking of might be Neilsons Danish ??? It came in a clear package with white coating (not white chocolate but white yogurt) and swirly pink lines on top. I think it was out in late 70's early 80's.

The Paulins factory in Winnepeg made this treat, along with the "Cuban Lunch". In 1976 they celebrated their 100 year anniversary. They sold out to Regal foods in the 1990's. You may find more resourses on the facebook page devoted to bringing back the cuban lunch.

I loved Pep Chew. It was my favourite and when talking to a friend a few weeks ago about our favourite I found out it was hers as well. We even went to the same store to get it but never saw each other. Found out she lived real close as well. Weird how small this world is. I thought I was the only one who bought them because they were never sold out. I thought they stopped making them because I was the only one who bought them hahahaha.
