Description
An easily disolved in milk, granulated mix. Made that nasty plain old white milk taste great!! I took it in a Baggie to school to mix with my little carton of milk everyday, The eggnog flavor was especially good! This page should be called food of the 60's & 70's, a lot of whats on it was around in the 60's too!!

I would love to know why they stopped producing this stuff. They did stop making it right?? If anyone knows the answers or where I could get some please send info. I'd love to get my hands on some of that egg nog mix!

Yeah, I love the Eggnog flavour...any hope of it coming back?
Kate - February 28, 2008 - Report this comment
I used to eat it right out of the jar with a spoon! and YES the EGG NOG was the BEST! I wonder if there was some health related issue as to why it is longer made? Cancer causing dye etc...*sigh
Keith Holm - March 17, 2008 - Report this comment
Another vote for Egg Nog. That was the greatest stuff in the world. I used to get a glass of milk. I would get a spoonfull and just dip it in the milk, not pour it, but dip it and eat it off the spoon. I miss that stuff.

I used to have a tall glass of PDQ and a cheese, mayo, and tomato sndwich for a late nite snack, it was EXTREMELY great tasting and filling!! Nothing better!!

PDQ is comfort to me. What was the name of the company that made it?!?! I wonder if they know how much affect PDQ had on us kids from the 70s!!! I WANT MY PDQ!!!
Patricia - March 26, 2008 - Report this comment
My whole family wishes for the return of PDQ, especially EGG NOG flavor. None of the current mixes blend as easily as PDQ beads.

According to wikipedia, it was manufactured by Ovaltine. The article goes on to say which existing produces maybe similar to the old pdq.

I loved, loved, loved Chocolate. I used to mix it with vanilla ice cream! YUM!! It was the only chocolate milk my mom would drink. I wish they'd bring it back!!

I have written to the company who now distributes Ovaltine and requested, (ok, perhaps begged) them to reconsider marketing PDQ Eggnog to the US. Anyone else interested in voicing your feelings? helpdesk@rawlingson.star.co.uk

I loved PDQ as a kid too, and remember sprinkling it on my ice cream. Fantastic!! Chocolate ovaltine is a exact twin product as far as I am concerned. I have been telling all my friends to try it on their ice cream or just take a spoonful! It is a new fad around here!!

One more thing... mixing chocolate ovaltine with hot milk makes the best hot chocolate!!!!

If I were sentenced to death and was granted one last meal I would have to wash it down with PDQ eggnog and strawberry flavors. With a root beer fizzie chaser.

Maybe we should all write Ovaltine because the PDQ EGG NOG really needs to make a comeback! Loved it.
Keith - December 19, 2008 - Report this comment
I loved the Eggnog PDQ as a kid. We would mix it with milk, put it over vanilla ice cream, as well as sprinkling it on toast. My father concocted a wonderful egg nog recipe that used store bought egg nog, PDQ, and vanilla ice cream. I don't know the rest of the recipe, but it was really good. Of course as kids, we weren't allowed to sample the version with Brandy. I wish that Ovaltine would consider making this for the U.S. market, at least at Christmas time. When I was in England it was hard to find egg nog in the stores so I suspect it is not a British Christmas custom. But it is real big in the U.S.
Teri - December 29, 2008 - Report this comment
Ahh, I thought I was the only crazy one who LOVED the eggnog PDQ! I tried to explain it to my eggnog loving children, how much I miss it, especially sprinkled on vanilla ice cream...and eating the chocolate kind straight out of the jar...I had forgotten about the strawberry kind! Ovaltine would have quite a market if they came back with this stuff!!
rick - January 03, 2009 - Report this comment
okay, so I'm a dissenter who really did not like the eggnog 'flavor'. But the classic Chocolate PDQ must be brought back. It's an essential. Amazing, delicious, versatile. Bring back chocolate PDQ!!!
Mark - February 03, 2009 - Report this comment
This is remarkable. How nice to know there are others whose taste buds still yearn for the good old days of instant eggnog mix. Since there's clearly a market void here, why has no entrepreneur rushed to fill it? Where do I line up to pay for this product?
Paul M - February 13, 2009 - Report this comment
Ahh yes> I was thinking about this a little while back. I am 43 and getting very nostalgic these days. Beth and Sarah, I also liked it in my vanilla ice cream. It was crunchy little nuggets of joy which I am sure Zorak would just love! Straight out of the jar onto the spoon and into my mouth was extra yummy. I am sure my parents would wonder why it never made much chocholate milk....cuz it was all in my belly straight off the spoon. Thank goodness the jar was tall! I think that ovaltine is similar, but not the same as PDQ! I do remember the Choco and Egg Nog, but not the strawberry. Used to get Strawberry Quik though. Where is the petition to bring it back!?
Mike S in St. Louis - February 24, 2009 - Report this comment
I wiuld sell my sould for a jar of PDQ. I used to get it when I visited my grandmother. She always made sure I had a jar. Mom would by it when we could afford it. I LOVED IT. Where can you get itif you can?

I am so happy to have found this. I told my kids about PDQ eggnog a while back & tried to find it at the store. When we couldn't find it they of looked at me like I was crazy talking about something that existed with the dinosaurs!

I never knew it as a flavoring for milk. My great grandparents always used the chocolate PDQ for a topping on vanilla ice cream. Wish I had kept one of the old jars. Good memories of summer visits to St. Louis.

Eggnog was the best- I remember a company called Sandoz was the maker, not sure if they are the same one that makes Ovaltine. Eggnog year long was great, now it's only during the holidays

Yes!!! I can't believe there are others out like there who are STILL MISSING PDQ eggnog mix. My grandma would always have some for us kids when we visited her in Minneapolis. We couldn't get it up by Fargo. We would sprinkle it on ice cream, too. It was wonderful! A couple years back I discovered Oregon Chai NOG, which came out around Christmas and was SO yummy..but that was discontinued TOO! Now, if I had PDQ egg nog mix, I could mix THAT into regular chai. But no, I'll have to wait until Christmas when egg nog is sold in the dairy case. I love egg nog and I would like it all year round! I'd much rather have that than chocolate milk. Who do we petition?

Just watched the show "Unwrapped" on the FOOD channel and they mentioned the Store "Hometown Favorites" www.hometownfavorites.com Checked it out and although they have lots of "forgotten" items, they had PDQ on their "unable to get" list. If I knew how to locate and purchase the recipe, I know I'd start making it again. Any businessmen reading this?

I to just watched "Unwrapped" and did hte same thing. I have looked for this for years and it is so upsetting to not be able to find it. I sure wish they would bring it back so our kids and grandkids could appreciate it as much as we all did as kids.

It's really funny to read all these posts! I came across this site because I was wondering what the stuff was. My Grandma passed away about a year ago and I'm a foodie. She had a full sealed jar of the Eggnog flavor PDQ in her pantry and it is one of the things I took from the estate - because I thought it was a great piece of food history. After reading this post - I'll have to try it. cheers!

I have a recipe for a christmas cookie that uses chocolate or eggnog beads. 1/2 cup butter, 1 cup flour, 3/4 cup beads. Spritz and bake at 375 for 8-10 minutes. I love them, but of course have been without for many years as I cannot find a substitute.

WHY DID THEY STOP MAKING PDQ? I Loved Chocolate and EGGNOG! It was great on ICE CREAM and MILK. IT MIXED WELL TOO... I hated quick and Syrup was more expensive.

My brother and I LOVED PDQ as kids and miss it terribly! We went to Aruba two years ago. He found a product that looks, smells, and tastes exactly like PDQ called "Chocolate Taco". I brought home three huge containers. I'm in the process of trying to see if I can get it shipped here to the US. I'll let you know.

Found a place that has something that may be close. I ordered some and will post back if it's a decent substitute. Search on Amazon for Aspen Mulling Eggnog mix. It's supposed to be back in stock soon, I ordered the last 9 pack in stock, sorry.

PDQ was the greatest. I used to put it on my Grandmothers home made icecream and make it supper chocolatey. I also used to put it in milk to make chocolate milk instead of Hersheys. There was no better.

The Aspen stuff is as close to PDQ as I've found! Sprinkle a little nutmeg in it and you're back at Grandma's house in 1975. Keep watching for it @amazon or contact the Aspen Mulling people at www dot aspenspices dot com. You can't have mine...

Back in Jan 2010, I left a post stating that the makers of Chocolate Taco (which is PDQ), would export it to the US this year. I emailed them in September. He said that due to exchange regulations, he was having a difficult time exporting the machinery to make it. He figures some time in 2011, maybe. I'm in his database, so he assured me he'd let me know what transpires. Another year to wait!

In Canada I remember this stuff being made in Quebec and not by Ovaltine. Maybe just the memories of a young child. Buying it at the A&P it was always on the bottom shelf. It was great.
Randy - November 17, 2010 - Report this comment
Ovaltine does not make or did they ever make PDQ. Ovaltine use to make something that was close to PDQ but it take like crap. I looked up Chocolate Taco and could find NOTHING about it on the internet. I also looked up Benco. Benco is the Ovaltine PDQ subsitute and not the real PDQ. I have been around the world in the US Army and have never found anything close the the ral PDQ

I see that somoene posted that the Sandoz company made PDQ. I looked up Sandoz on the internet and its a drug company. Does any one have a old bottom of PDQ they can look at and see if their is a address or state or country saying where the Sandoz company was located.

I actually have some of the eggnog mix I got out of the cabinet when my Mother died. It was made by Sandoz Nutrition and they were based in Minneapolis Minnesota, 55416. I am trying to recreate the cookie recipe we use to make with it.
George - December 24, 2010 - Report this comment
Sandoz Nutrition was sold to Novartis, which has since been sold to Nestle Nutrition. All those business changes, no wonder they dont make PDQ anymore. I went to www.nestlenutrition.com I only see baby, healthcare, performance, and weight loss products. They have a video, but my computer dont play videos. It would seem that Ovaltine is out of the picture. Rather than rely on these products, cant someone who's really into cooking just make up some powdered eggnog mix? I'm no cook, but I knew they sell powdered eggs. Then there would be the spices, and what else? There must be someone creative on here.

Donna Randolph - January 05, 2011 - Report this comment
My cousin and I were just talking about how much we miss PDQ Egg Nog in milk. I googled and found this site. The comments here must represent only a small fraction of the people who miss PDQ and the new generations who would come to love it if it were still on the market. With so much interest in this product one would think whatever company owns the rights to it would bring it back out. It was the one way to enjoy egg nog the whole year through. I mean seriously, companies bring out so many bad products that get no sales traction every day. Why not bring back something that the people want?
Peggy - January 10, 2011 - Report this comment
Update: I emailed the makers of Chocolate Taco again late 2010. This was his response: "Due to the exchange regulations in our country, we could not import the new machines yet, so we will not be able to start Taco exports till de beginning of 2011 (at least). As I wrote in my past e-mail, we included all you in our database and we will inform you as soon as we will be able to do it." So let's hope for the best!

PDQ was the best. Nothing has come close to it. I still use old PDQ jars to store things in. I have an 8 year lod son and was moaking him chocolate milk and saw an old jar with nuts in it and reminded me of how great it was. I had to look it up and found this site. My wife never had it and I can't get her to believe how great all three flavors are. It is ashame that all the kids who grow up with it, that their kids can't enjoy it.

When I was little, in the mid to late 60's and early 70's, PDQ was manufactured at the Crimco (maybe Krimco?) Corp. in Bensenville, IL, a town just outside O'Hare. My dad owned the local waste collecting business and knew everyone. The nice people at Krimco always used to send home PDQ for us kids. The first was the Chocolate and Strawberry with Egg Nog coming out later. We loved them all. I don't remember at what point, but I believe Krimco sold the business so there went our PDQ supply! Fond memories of PDQ and I wish it was still around too - much better than Ovaltine, hot or cold! I wonder where those patents went? Someone could have a gold mine I would think.

I loved PDQ egg nog too, I have a jar of it I bought on eBay that is still sealed, probably still edible but I wouldn't risk it. For those of you in the USA there are a few alternatives available on Amazon.com, if you search their grocery section for eggnog mix there is an Aspen one that looks like PDQ, and a concentrated liquid one. Can't find anything in Canada so far though.

Didn't Carnation make the eggnog flavored instant drink? I'm running late but just realizing that I'm the same age of my mom when she was grabbing a Carnation instant milk drink and running my own kids out for school! She didn't like the eggnog flavor, saying that it was just fir Christmas, but my dad mixed mine for me, adding nutmeg to it and whispering, "Merry Christmas!" when he gave it to me, even in May!

Like everyone else I loved it as a kid and would love to find some now. I was a picky kid so eggnog was out of the question. It was chocolate only. In early 1964 my father was laid off from the Tennessee Coal & Iron (TCI) plant in Birmingham, AL. He drove to Bensenville, IL because his brother in law said he could get him a job. The job was at Crimco. He was assigned to screw the lids onto the jars of PDQ after they were filled. He said after his first shift he couldn't make a fist with either hand because they were so sore!

I was just talking to my mom on the phone about having eggnog with dinner tonight (if it is any good). I said that if its not I guess I could crack open my last can of PDQ eggnog mix. She laughs and says or 1 of her 2 cans. It's like freeze dried so it should be good, right? After all its only 25 years old. So I pout PDQ in my Google bar to see if anyone is making it again and came upon this website. We have had a blast reading everyone's comments and remembering all the PDQ we have used over the years. Primarily PDQ "Eggnog Punch". YUMMMMMMM!!!! The Best Party Punch in the world. We both agree that someone needs to produce this wonderful product. I believe the only reason there are not more comments on here is that like me the other PDQ lovers have not thought about putting PDQ in their search engine.

I remember krimco so well, once or twice a month the whole town of Bensenville would smell of chocolate and krimco would bring free samples of PDQ for the kids to try at school and comment on. It is one of the many great childhood memories from Bensenville, now quietly sinking into the runways of O'hara.

I really wish they would bring back PDQ Eggnog mix. I loved it as a kid. I think it was so much better than the ready made kind they have in the stores now. PDQ is the closest kind to my mom's recipe when she would make it homemade. Please somebody bring it back.

I loved PDQ! When Mom wouldn't buy any more Koogle, (b/c I ate it all!), I would spread peanut butter on bread and sprinkle some chocolate PDQ on it! It was really great mixed in milk or sprinkled over Vanilla ice-cream.

I am so happy to see all of these comments about PDQ! I am 48 and was just telling everyone at the DINNER TABLE (YES - still see the importance of the family dinners) I used to love in on Vanilla Ice Cream. Egg Nog and Chocolate were the best EVER! Maybe if we keep writing and calling they will bring in back. Thanks for the memories.

My Dad introduced this to our family back in the 60s. It was absolutely divine! I have been searching for it for years on the Internet. This was the first time I found this page! When my children were little and we travelled to the U.S., I would search every grocery chain we came across, looking for PDQ Eggnog. I never found it. PDQ was when I learned what the acronym stood for and as a young girl, told my Dad he was using a bad word which we were taught never to use! lol! Wish they would make it again?!

Myself and a co-worker were just talking about growing up on the farm and both us loved PDQ (both chocolate and egg-nog). We remember where it was kept in the cupboard and how good it was on ice cream! We would LOVE to have this yummy stuff made again! BRING BACK PDQ!

I hope the people that have an actual jar of PDQ report the ingredients, or was this before companies had to disclose what was in their product? I loved it on ice cream, watching the chocolate beads melt with the ice cream.

Has anyone had an Ice Cream Cake from Dairy Queen? I really believe that the chocolate crunchies in the chocolate sauce is just like PDQ. If anyone reads this and knows what I'm talking about or try a DQ ice cream cake let me know what you think? I wish they would bring it back also!!!

I just had a taste sensation come to me randomly. I had to search memory banks for a moment, and then I recalled the flavor. It was an egg nog powder I had not tasted for 30 years… I searched egg nog powder and this site came up.. Glad to know others recall this unique taste. I didn't realize it was gone. It just disappeared with no fan fair apparently… I was a wrestler who could't drink high calorie eggnog during season,so once summer hit I always has a storehold of eggnog PDQ around to mix in ice cold protein shakes. Delicious! I agree, let's start a critical mass movement to bring it back!!!

What did PDQ stand for? In reading above comments someone mentioned it contained a label by a pharmaceutical company "sandoz" which was bought over by "Novartis" . You can blow this remark off if u choose to however this Has me wondering and I'm quite concerned with what did we actually consume if it was indeed the brainchild of a pharmaceutical company! Hoping we weren't part of an experiment back in the 1960's and 70's! Makes me pensive.

There is nothing that even comes ramotely close to the excellence of PDQ expo ally the eggnog flavor so sad you get hooked on a product and then they do away with it as if it was not a good seller well I think you can clearly see Americans are crying out for that old fashion goodness how can you deprive that many people it's unfair to America .....

There may be hope. Can someone please post the list of ingredients from one of those old jars of PDQ? We may be able to produce the stuff again if it is not too dangerous to consume. The market is clearly there.

So, I have read that they were sometimes eaten by the spoonful and caused sore mouths; here is a link that say's they go poppity pop ( i never tried them without milk, as a child; I loved the eggnog. Also maybe they weren't processed in a way that the egg yolk was considered safe at the time??? anyway; I believe that poprocks ( with carbon dioxide) are back on the market... and USDA says raw eggs are not as bad as once believed... but If kids are going to put spoonfulls into their mouths; it is still going to leave the company open to lawsuits. I think this was all Hush Hush when they were discontinued; I even googled Wikipedia and no mention of the Poppity Pop or why they were discontinued.

I used to make a Reeses sandwich with the chocolate. I would put peanut butter on the bread and then a spoon ful and a half of the chocolate PDQ on it and fold it in half so I wouldn't loose any of the chocolate yumm.
