Description
This may have come out in the 60s but there was a candy called M & M Fruit Chewies. The jingle lyrics were, "You get two-hundred and two mouth watering chews in every pack of M & M Chewies." But this candy went away but has returned (maybe by another company) and it is called, Starbursts. They taste exactly the same.

OMG! My childhood friend used to give these to the kids in our carpool. Her grandma would give her enough for everyone in the car. I was thinking about 'em the other day and wondering why the heck this girl called 'em "Chewies" instead of Starburst. Case closed!

My mom used to buy these for me when I was a kid. I'm not positive on the date, but basing it on where I was living at the time, I put this at somewhere between 1965-1967, as I was 12, living in McLean, Va. You could get a big bag at the local A&P, Peoples Drug, or Giant Foods for $.29! I thought was an "endless bottom" bag. Huge. Probably around 16-20 oz. in reality. I don't recall them being as tart at the Starburst, nor, as firm, probably because of the higher sugar content in candy at that time. They sure were good, though, as I can attest to the lack of good teeth left in my mouth!

I remember the M&M's Fruit Chewies in 1965 and also the M&M's Chocolate Wafer Bar--both of which were re-incarnated as Starburst and Kit-Kat.

Up till now, I wasn't even sure if my vague memory of M&M Fruit Chewies was even a real thing! I was about 3 or 4 back in or around 1963 or 1964 in Syracuse NY. I moved to Milwaukee and nobody had ever heard of them....and later....Starburst appeared...about 1973 or so??? 22 cavities later...and I still remember them! Can't remember what I had for breakfast today though...hehe!

I can still sing that jingle - but I can't find it on YouTube! I grew up in Chicago and I place these around 1965.

I remember when the Chewies came out around 1962 I was living in New Britain Conn. They were my favorite, I went to Wales two years later and they had them there but were called Opal Fruits.

In 65 I was backpacking and went to bed with a bag of fruit chewies. The next morning I awoke to a bear paw fishing them out of my bag. I guess I'd get a ticket if it happened today.

I remember that the fruit chewies came in a pack of about 8 to 10, with each one wrapped individually, but that there was also another white piece of wrapping around each one inside of the colored wrapper.

Sister Consuela took a handful of M&M Fruit Chewies from my friend Greg in 8th grade. She put them by the statue of our Lady of Permanent Disgrace (The Divine BVM) but we stole them back when we went out to recess. Man was she mad. "That's stealing! AND you stole from the Blessed Virgin Mary!" M&M Fruit Chewies have paved my way to hell. That was 1967 in Wisconsin, so they were around back then.

I remember buying the M&M Fruit Chewies when I was in Middle School and I keep telling my family that was the precursor to Starburst Fruit Chews. Now I have verification. No one else in my family remembers them.

Oh, yes!! Fruit Chewies were my favorite back around 1965-ish. I was a fifth grader and confirmed that year; so deemed "insightful" enough to abstain from something during Lent. I chose Fruit Chewies. My parents bought a bag and hid it in the freezer awaiting Easter Sunday. I found them (pre-Easter) and would sneak one at a time. Probably all gone by Easter; so much for Lenten abstinence!

Fruit Chewies and Starburst are one in the same to me...the strawberry, lemon, and orange flavors haven't changed since they first came out in the '60s. But, there was no cherry flavor then...it was LIME, strawberry, lemon, and orange. Lime chewies were WAY BETTER than the cherry crap ones they have now.

The difference between M&M cheeked and Starburst is that M&M chews weren't tart like Starburst. I remember them well

M&M's wafer bar competed against Kit Kat,first becoming M&M Sprint and then Mars Snik Snak.

The rest of the ad jingle: "Four fruit flavors, six pieces per pack. Costs just a nickel -- but that's not all, Jack! You get 202 mouth-watering chews with M&Ms new Fruit Chewies!"
