When I was in junior high, I was trying to save money in addition to my allowance for something or other. So I took my lunch money, bought a Milkshake Bar, and pocketed the rest. I saved up quite a bit and just loved those Milkshake Bars.

does anyone know the jingle to this candy bar? I remember as a kid seeing two dancing cartoon cows singing something like: Milkshake, boom-boom! Milkshaek, boom-boom! The chocolate coated candy bar!! ...or something along those lines
Montel - August 15, 2008 - Report this comment
Its Milkshake, boom-boom! Milkshake, boom-boom! The delicious Moolicious candy bar MOOOOOLicious!!!! It was 2 bi-pedal cows in tutus one pink the other yellow. When they said BOOM BOOM they did the Bump. They were made by Hollywood Candy in Centralia, IL. Which is my hometown. That was the best candybar ever made!

Did you ever have them FROZEN? They were the best! Hot summer days at the lake up north MN-nothing better than that! Hollywood---please bring them back!!!

Ever since Hurricane Katrina something has made me want a Milkshake Candy bar like never before! I have been hunting, asking, looking, hoping stores like Cracker barrel and Economy Candy in NY would have them, but no such luck. Frozen...oh yeah..the best-inexpensive-leaves-you with-a-great-taste-and-craving-for-more candy bar! Too bad it's gone!

I've been trying to explain these candy bars to my kids - my husband thinks I'm nuts. We used to go to Lakewood Swimming Pool in the summer and they sold them frozen. They were sooo good. How and why did they quit making these things? My kids think a Kit-Kat is really good - it's sooo sad!
Bruce in Virginia - December 28, 2008 - Report this comment
Good God, what an inspiring discussion! YES! Milkshake Candy Bars!! Even now I tell my kids stories about how good they were, how we had a box of them frozen at the beach every summer, how perfect they were in every way. It's deeply tragic to think that one can't even find a picture of the wrapper on line!!

While URL's are not allowed here, you might check out the following site for an ad for the Milkshake bars: theimaginaryworld (add the obligatory w's and com) and then add the slash; finally add the nwcal9 with a period and the jpg extension on it). I hope this brings back memories

The Meadows Theater in Queens, NY, sold a Milkshake candy bar for five cents in the 50s-60s. If you wanted a frozen one, it came on a stick and it cost six cents. I believe the stick had the name embossed on it.

For some reason I couldn't find them in Ohio where I grew up but when we went to my Grandmother's house in West Virginia we would stop for gas and they would always have them in the stores there. I was devastated to find out they were no longer being made!

I had my first milkshake candy bar when I was a kid. It had taken over 20 years of searching to find it again. I found it on a trip to Pennsylvania. I bought a case of them and had them frozen. It was 20 years in waiting. Thanks for the memory.

My dad ran a beach concession every summer on Cape Cod in Falmouth MA. One of the absolute best sellers was the Milkshake candy bars, frozen of course and with the stick that had the the name on it. I remember helping sometime, putting the sticks in the candy bar to get them ready to be frozen. The maker just gave us the sticks with the name on it, I think they came in each box. The company promoted the "frozen" milk shake that's for sure. I did read somewhere that Hollywood Candy sold off its candy bar recipes to a major candy company. So the rights to it are still out there they just choose not to make them. The last one I got was in 1995 or 1996. There was only one small store in Hyannis MA that I could find them at. The wrapper at that point had pink lettering as opposed to the green lettering most would remember. It did taste just as good and I did freeze a few. Someone needs to convey to the new owners that they need to make them again, even if it where a limited run. Vince

Totally the best candy bar fresh or frozen that I remember growing up. It is hard to explain to anyone that has not had the oppurtunity to taste them. I tried to tell my 11 year old son about them and wanted one, but was saddened to hear that they are lonnnng gone. So I told him we would check the internet to see if I could order some, but alas this was all we could find. Sad, that nobody makes these anymore.

Yes, I remember how some caramel would ooze out and make the wrapper stick. My family thinks I am nuts too, talking about a candy bar they never heard of! Never had them frozen, but love, loved them! WHO made them??????

When I think of Milkshake bars...I think frozen, on a stick and sold at the Little League concession stand. I own a convenience store...and sell frozen Milky Ways on a stick..that I insert myself...not quite the Milkshake, though...I was so big that candy bar...and remembering it...makes me smile. Little League...and a Frozen Milkshake bar. Summertime, at it's finest. :)

The Milkshake bar was owned by the hollywood candy company, started In 1933, they Invented the fluffy nougat that Mars copied for the 3 Muskateers bar. Hollywood also made the zero bar and payday, I always loved both the zero bar and Milkshake and also remember having the Milkshake bar at my local swimming pool, they never put sticks In them but they were alys frozen and as I recall they only sold 2 candy bars at my pool and the other bar was a zagnut bar because It wouldn't melt In the heat. I recall that both bars were very reasonable and very good. I recall the Milkshake bar being bigger, cheaper and much better than 3 Muskateers, Milkshake bars were not as sweet and might have had a slight malt taste and fluffier. Leaf bought Hollywood In 1988 and now the Hollywood brands are owned by Hershey. Its a shame because of the 3 most popular Hollywood bars (Milkshake, Payday and Zero) that Hershey chose not to make Milkshake.

My sister who is 9.5 years older than me used to drive me downtown to Edna's Drive-in in Davenport Washington when I was in grade school to get a frozen Milkshake Bar. We were just reminiscing about our old home town because our mother just passed away. This is a great memory of my childhood. I agree with Eggbert's October 25th comments. I remember the Milkshake candy bar being so delicious! As a kid in the mid 60's Milkshakes were best in the summertime 'cause the local 5-and-dime would push an ice cream-like stick in one end and freeze them! It would be so hot out and that cold, malted chocolate flavor was such a treat! I have always shared all my favorite childhood things with my kids and I wish I could share that one! Recently, a local store offered some of the old chewing gum flavors: Cloves and BlackJack; I wish they'd do that with the good ol' Milkshakes!!

A New York businessman, Kenneth Wiesen, who brought back the Bonomo Turkish Taffy, has expressed interest in bringing back the Milkshake bar. He's contacted local media in the Centralia area looking for information on the bar from former employees as consultants. He states that it may be months to years before he obtains the trade/patent rights, but who knows, it might make a comeback. I don't remember the bar but I know many people who worked for Hollywood and they all claimed that the Milkshake was the best candy bar ever.

The Milkshake candy bar goes further back than the 1970's. I was eating them in 1959 and 1960 on my way home from school. Cash in a few soda bottles for the 3 cent per empty bottle deposit and I would have a Milkshake bar for the walk home from school. Frozen or straight up ambient temperature did not make any difference. They were tasty at any time at any temperature. There was also the Seven-Up bar. Remember that one? There was so much more variety and choice back then than there is now. Back then it was taste buds and competition. Nowadays it is marketing and media.

Absolutely nothing compares to a MilkShake Candy bar. By far the very best ever made. It's a shame the the top people in corporate always want to change or delet the best things.

Ditto. I'll offer a modicum of hope. A few years back there were lots of postings on the Web like this about Bonomo Turkish Taffy. That candy bar is now available EXACTLY like the original. It seems that enough people made noise and someone who owned the rights/recipe responded. Having said that, if you are a Milkshake lover, try Reese's Whipps. The first time I tried one it was like eating a Milkshake with peanut butter cream instead of caramel. Not as good, but it had the consistency and some of the flavor. Just hearing that Hershey ended up with what was the Hollywood Candy company has given me additional hope. They already appear to be borrowing from the Milkshake recipe. It can't be that difficult to recreate the bar like was done with Turkish Taffy. The more noise that Hershey hears, the more they'll start to think about the financial benefits.

Maybe if everyone typing on here would contact Hershey's they might dig out the recipe and start making them again. They were my Dad's favorite many moons ago and he had gotten all 4 of us kids hooked on them too. I would like to see them back too. Keep telling my 10 year old about them and she wants to know how a candy bar can be as good as I tell her they were?!Bring back Milk Shake candy bars.

Don't they (Hershey) have a Facebook page or a Twitter page where people can start letting them know that this is a candy bar that needs to be brought back? I love frozen Snickers bars, but nothing comes close to the flavor of a frozen Milkshake bar. Maybe they could just make them for the summer season each year. Seems like half the people posting here have the same sort of memory of how great these things were as a treat in the summer..... fingers crossed for this to happen.

I used to pick up pop cans and bottles along my paper route in the late 70's and would cash them in for the deposit at the little store at the end of my route. Every penny went toward buying Milkshake Candy Bars! I would polish off all of them before I got home (and then wonder why I had issues with hypoclycemia as a kid! Lol) I found them briefly as a special issue in the mid 90's but never since. There is a large candy store near my house that is keeping an eye out for them for me. The have a whole section of vintage candy bars. The owner is too young to remember them but is looking nonetheless. I am convinced that my nieces and nephew's childhoods will not be complete until they have had a chance to eat one of these!

My Favorite Candy Bar by Far!!! I too thought that the Reese's Whipps tasted somewhat like my all time favorite candy bar "Milkshake" but have not been able to find these in W. Penna. recently either. If Hershey owns the recipe to the Milkshake, they really need to bring it back. I would buy two cases right now and put them in the freezer.
JON - April 14, 2013 - Report this comment
I used to buy them from the ice cream truck. they came with a stick in them and sometimes it would say free milkshake, an the next time i'd get one free. I was able to buy them in the mid 90s at only one store so i'd the whole box.

I've never had a milkshake candy bar, but hearing you all talk about it makes me want to try it. I saw an article that talked about this candy bar, payday, and a couple of others and it said that the payday and one other were the only ones still being made by Hershey. So it sounds like they may have the recipe. They need to see how many people want this candy bar, maybe they would start making it.

When I came back from Okinawa in 1982, after a three year tour at Kadena AB, my mother asked me what I missed the most while I was gone, and what did I want her to have for me when I got back. I answered, "A couple of Stroh's beers, and a couple of Milkshake Bars". She bought me a case of each of them, and put the Milkshakes in the freezer, and the Stroh's in a the fridge. I had the world's best mother.

This is so awesome I found all this!! I would ask my sisters if they remembered this candy bar and they thought I was crazy. My grandma used to take us to the local malt shop and I would also get this, frozen of course. Loved it. This was down in Pepin, Wisconsin, where my grandmother lived. She did not have much money but she would always try to treat us to something at the malt shop. I would get this and my younger sister would get a Cherry 7-Up or something along that line. I then saw an episode of Bones and they were talking about some ice cream so I thought maybe that was it. Well, that was not, but better yet I came across all you lovely people who remembered. Thanks for the memories!!!

I know this is about the Milkshake Candy Bar, but remember Mallow Cups, Oh Henry bars, and Black Jack candy or gum (my grandpa used to give us this). When I see some of the old time candy come back I always have to buy some.

Oh how I loved the Milk Shake candy bars. They were 15 cents when I was growing up in the 70's. If I could scrape together a dime, nickel and a penny for tax I was on my bike to the store for a Milk Shake!!

There were two candys I had to have when I went to the Renel or the Erlen theaters. One was the giant Charms lollipop but I started that while I waited just enough time for the frozen Milkshake bat on a stick to thaw just enough that I would not ruin my teeth. Oh how I miss this candy. No current candy bar comes close. I have written to Hershey at least a dozen times without even a reply. They cannot ignore all of us.

From the prime time TV vault, a Milkshake bar animated commercial with two cows dancing on a stage. This aired on "Batman" over ABC (3/23/67). At the time, Hollywood Brands was owned by Continental Foods of Centralia, Illinois. Hollywood began in 1928 in Minneapolis. Also at the time, "Batman" was winding down its two night a week cliffhanger episodes. The third season was only 30 minutes a week, had Batgirl, and some of the nuttiest villains, like The Archer (Art Carney), and plots even campier than the first two seasons. While Kellogg's and Bristol-Myers sponsored "Batman" weekly, candy companies like Hollywood and Ludens (5th Avenue) advertised sporadically.

God... I LOVED the Milkshake candy bar. We had a outdoor pool we'd visit during the summer with a confection stand. They had these in a freezer, and I'd get the Milkshake candy bar with a Fanta orange soda. Ah, to be young again! This was in the early to mid 70s. I swear, that candy bar was the BEST candy bar I've ever had. My favorite now is Snickers. But I wish I could sink my teeth into a Milkshake again, but old time's sake. I can almost taste it thinking about it, even though it's been about 40 years since I've had one. It had such a unique, malty flavor, much better then the usual chocolate-focused bars out there at the time. Hopefully someone will make it again someday.

From early 1970, a prominent display ad for Milkshake bars appears during "Beat the Clock" with Jack Narz hosting. Milkshake bars were part of the "party" (consolation) prizes given to contestant couples who failed to complete a stunt in time. Comedian Marty Allen was the celebrity guest who assisted both couples as well as performing a solo stunt for cash. Couples who succeeded in beating the clock went to the cash board to pick a letter with a hidden amount (highest was $200). This version of "BTC" was taped in Canada and had a live organist play for dramatic effect. Young female models assisted with contestant stunts. By 1971, the policy of married couples only was abolished, and unmarried male-female couples could participate. Wanting to return to Los Angeles, Narz left the show, replaced by less genial Gene Wood, in 1972. All contestants and those in studio audience received a home "Beat the Clock" stunt game set.
