That was the BEST sandwich McDonald's ever had. TRUST ME.....if you bring it back, it will be a HIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Absolutely the best thing McDonalds has ever done (meatwise). I have no idea why it ever left the menu.

I used to make a 32 mile round trip for these twice a week. It was a sad thing to see them taken off the menu.

I found out it was gone when I ordered one and was told it had been discontinued two years prior. I chuckled, saying "I don't come here often." It was a proud moment!

I worked for McD's from '78 - 82. The steak sandwich was removed due to it's very small profit margin. The sandwich had to be seared to the point where my hand went numb for months from having to sear the steak so hard for so long.

this sandwich was the best.!!!! i just cant beilive its gone todays mcdonalds is just bad for you its killing you slowly i dnt even like mcdonalds but that sandwich made me fall in love with there food. it doesent even taste the same any more

I worked at McD's in the Summer of '79. These "steaks" were meant to have a grilled appearance so they had lines etched into the raw meat. After cooking on a flat grill the steak would be dark with light colored lines as opposed to a light steak with dark lines. My manager yelled at me because I would press down too hard on the meat with the sear tool which would remove the lines altogether. I do remember the steak sandwich tasting pretty good though. Even though the steaks were processed meat, the texture was different than the burgers... a bit closer to a real steak.

Perhaps the breakfast steak and egg sandwich is what this evolved into.

This sandwich was great.It tasted like real meat.I think it's demise was due to it's price,which was kind of high compared to the other sanwiches of that time.

I worked at Mc'D in HS (80-82). The Steak sandwich was the best thing on the menu!!!! This is the one that needs to come back, and stay!!!!!

This was the best sandwich they had or have ever made! The sause was amazing. I do not think it was A-1 but rather their own. They bring back the crappy McRib but not something that actually tasted good!

In my area (Santa Monica,CA) the chopped steak sandwich actually came with a promotional steak knife wrapped in cellophane, no joke, a real honest to god metal steak knife, serrations and all. Kinda dangerous, in retrospect, but hella cool (and the best sandwich, loved the soft bun, too!!)....

I actually wrote a letter to McD HQ some years back asking of the sandwich would ever come back-- I recived a pretty stndard form letter thanking me for my interest in McD and a couple coupons.

It was the BEST FAST FOOD SANDWICH ever! The steak sauce alone was worth the price. When they discontinued the sandwich I begged my local McDonalds for the left over sauce and got half a case (I promised not to tell so don't pass on that part of thios comment - LOL). BRING IT BACK - PLEASE!!!

McDonalds said they would consider bringing it back if they had enough CUSTOMERS wanting it.

It was the Best. I worked at the McD in NYC during the 80s, and we got a food allowance per/hr worked. One of the issues I heard from the Mgrs was that because of price more employees (thru food allowance) bought it than customers. I would love it if McDonald's brought it back!

Remember this sandwich and the Chedder Melt when working there in 88-92, loved the steak sandwich while that chedder melt grossed me out! yet they bring that back from time to time.

I worked at a McDonald's in Connecticut in 1981 and used to get the steak sandwich with my food allowance. I agree that it was the best sandwich they ever made.

I concur with everyone who loved the McSteak.....It is by far way better than that McRib,pork parts ground to a slurry,compressed and frozen,,,, MMmmmmm After a little redbud nothing beat 3 or 4 McSteaks :)

I googled "McD's Chopped Beefsteak" sandwich, wondering wat became of it, and it brought me here to this thread. It's been over 30 years and I still remember and crave it from those early- '80's days. My favorite fast food sandwich ever.

When I was growing up in the 80's my mom worked at McD's to help out. I remember begging my dad to take us there and eat almost every night just so I could get a McSteak sandwich. They were the best!!!

Used to get these nearly every night OMW to my karate classes in Springfield Mass. Miss this, bring it back I will be back to Mcd's.

The steak sandwich was the first non hamburger meal I had at McDonald's. It was great. I think the "steak sauce" they gave you was the prelude to the BBQ sauce they give you with Chicken McNuggets. It was great. The sandwich was great. They should give it another go 'round.

Still miss this sandwich. I was in sales in the 80's and I knew every McDonalds in my territory where I could get the chopped beefsteak sandwich. I've sent letters asking them to bring it back. It was the best McDonalds sandwich bar none. The sauce and the bun were the secret!

Got this sandwich everyday when I worked in Jenkintown Pa. It was addicting! They should bring it back occasionally. I just had that new Sirloin burger and was seriously disappointed, wasn't worth the price. Bring back the McSteak!

I agree with the price being the reason for it's demise. I rarely bought one, but this was what I ate on break while working there. A bit of big mac sauce instead of the bbq made it even more awesome.

Comparing the McSteak to the Angus burgers offered today. During the two years McSteak was sold, Price jumped from a dollar to $1.29 (hamburgers were 50 cents, cheeseburgers were 60 cents, Big Mac was $1.79, all triple the 1968 prices). The Angus burger was $5 (no wonder these steak burgers had short availability).

I worked at McD's in Glenville, NY in 1980, the year the Beefsteak sandwich was introduced... I agree with the majority in this posting, definitely the best sandwich they ever produced! Dion, you're correct… the sauce was McDonalds own. It was sweeter than A1 Sauce (and stickier). Also the onions were fresh, not grilled as one poster described. McDonalds… please give the Beefsteak Sandwich another run!

Ahh Yes... The McDonald's Steak sandwich from 1980-1982 that came with a large packet of Kikkoman Steak Sauce and was only sold from 4:00 P.M. until closing time at least in the suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin stores. I was only eleven years old when this came out in 1980 and remember feeling extra grown up ordering this superb sandwich with my mom and that these trips were special as it had to be after 4:00 P.M. just like going out for a steak dinner! The sauce was the great part and I always got an extra packet by coming up with some excuse when they argued about it--so I could dip my french fries in the stuff. Great Times! Then POOF! sometime in 1982 it was gone forever.

Please, please, please bring back the McDonald's Steak sandwich to the Toledo, OH area. I will be the first one to sign up to participate in a market test for our region.

This was the best sandwich. Juicy steak, onion on a nice roll with a steak sauce that worked. They brought it back in the Ventura area around 1989 - 1990 but was short lived. I also wrote an email and was only thanked for my interest.

Worked at McD's while these were on the menu...good as they were...cooking up two of those bad boys, with extra grilled onions made the best damn Steak Big Mac! Soooo good!

I was not there, but it sounds AMAZING! If they brought this back, I would buy it. It was not even that expensive. Compare that to the pastrami sandwich at Subway.

It was the best thing McDonald's ever made. I would make the 15 mile trip several times a week to get it. It tasted more like steak than the burgers and well worth the price. They should be brought back but only if they make it the same.

On the Chicago scene. From 10/5/80, commercial for McDonald's Beefsteak Sandwich. Steak sauce on the side. Shaped like a McRib. Price was $1.29, and volunteer firefighters shown. This aired during Chicago White Sox baseball on WSNS, Ch. 44. Game was season finale (vs. Angels) at old Comiskey Park. Harry Caray, Jim Piersall and Joe McConnell called the action.
