The chocolate peanut butter logs were a staple in my grandmother's cupboard. They were fabulous and I would give anything to have one today.

I have been watching for those Ideal Bars for years and did not realize that Nabisco had quit making them. They are the B E S T Cookie and if Nabisco doesn't want to make them anymore, then someone needs to reintroduce them.
Dave in Texas - December 11, 2007 - Report this comment
I grew up devouring these cookies, they are the BEST ever Nabisco made. I moved from Cali to Texas in 1980, Texas didn't have any...bummer. I thought it was a heat issue...nope. When I revisted Cali they didn't have any as well. They've become extinct. Can ANYONE...convince Nabisco to re-make these cookies...PLEASE

I loved Those Cookies -- Mom used to have to hide them in the 2nd drawer -- they were such a treat -- and I'd love to have them again

They just disappeared! My sisters and I loved them and ordering GS Tagalongs reminds us every year that they've disappeared. Sometimes Mom hid them - they lasted about a day, cost a little more than most other cookies and were worth every dime. Please, Nabisco, bring them back! Millions of other chocolate coated cookies survive shipping and storage - and I guess that most of us would still want them even if the chocolate was melted!
Pete - April 03, 2008 - Report this comment
I hope it's okay to leave this comment here, I was enjoying these cookies in the 60s. Dark chocolate over crunchy peanut butter, I can almost taste them. Perhaps if we all email Nabisco. I actually contacted them and they said if they heard from enough people they might consider bringing them back.

Ideal bars were the best store-bought cookies ever made. I don't know why the hoopleheads at Nabisco won't make these incredibly popular bars anymore. I guess they don't need the money.
Cathy - April 17, 2008 - Report this comment
These cookies RULED! My brother and I could eat a whole package of them in one sitting back when we were kids (ahhh, the good old days of a speedier metabolism!). The folks at Nabisco must just be a bunch of big, dumb, stupidheads to not want to bring them back. My kids love peanut butter and chocolate, I know they would devour these!

I would love it if the Ideal bars would come back. We need to take action for Nabisco to put these cookies back on the shelves, there wouldn't be many in the stores where I live because "I'D BUY ALL OF THEM".

I think I saw the Nabisco executives all testifying before congress and each one in turn said "Ideal cookies are not addictive" and they had to pay millions in a settlement.

Oh my God I too loved them my sisters & I would put them in the fridge as well & I would love to have them back. I have e-mailed Nabisco begging for them to just bring them back as a seasonal item or a limited time only so me & my sisters could stock them in the freezer but I think if everyone would e-mail them maybe they would listen.

I am thinking of starting a "petition" that would go to Nabisco ... we all NEED these Ideal bars back on the shelves of our local stores. "Once Upon A Time" I was told that Nabisco discontinued production of these cookies because of the heat factor in shipping ... (chocolate melting, etc.) -the way I see it ... those of us that LOVED the cookie would be happy to find it in our GROCER'S refrigerator section ... I don't care which aisle it's in ... just bring it back. Now - as to starting a "petition" - any suggestions and who would like to sign?! Let me know! ;-) THANKS

Is it my distorted memory or were Ideal Peanut Butter Bars only available in the fall and winter? I seem to remember the stores being out of them during the hot months, then one day they would appear on the shelf and for the next few months I couldn’t get enough of them. They were expensive, but worth every penny. I loved them so much that I actually got them as a gift on my birthday.

Ideal Bars were my favorites too (along with peanut butter Spoon Candy, also by Kraft/Nabisco)! I contacted them and received a very narrow minded canned response that they don't bring back discontinued products. They are so missing the boat on a retro line for all of us who remember these products. I don't buy cookies or pudding any more, but I would buy Ideal Bars and Spoon Candy...so would many baby boomers. Those fond memories and feeling like a kid again. I wish I could get through to Kraft/Nabisco!

My favorite cookie above all was Ideal. I grew up in the midwest and I beleive Karen is correct above that the Ideal was only available in the fall and winter. I can recall in the early 70's playing football with the neighbood kids in the fall and after working up a good hunger pain we would walk down the block to the local A&P store and buy a package of Ideal cookies and eat them all. I would do almost anything for a package of Ideal cookies. Little Debbies just don't work for me. PLEASE BRING THEM BACK NABISCO

My people! Finaly found on the web, after years of idly searching. For the longest time, I refused to believe that Ideal bars (we always called them bars) weren't being made anymore. I always figured they were available in some part of the country that I hadn't visited yet. Finally, I accepted that I'll never see them again, but I still reflexively look in the cookie aisle when I'm in the grocery store. Gonna have to visit the Kraft foods site and ask for them back. Kids can't grow up without tasting these!

Oh My God do I have a story about these cookies!!! When I was a kid I used to be a pretty good actor. Well once upon a time my Mom bought these cookies and I faked being sick to stay home from school so I could find where she hid them. It was on the very top shelf. I was a good climber too. I snuck them down and proceded to eat every single one of them in that brown, orange, and see- through wrapper. I can even smell them now, I was about 9 then and now I'm 46. Well it was about 9 AM and I knew I was busted but Mom wasn't due home till much later in the afternoon. So I walked 5 huge blocks in Altadena CA. and spent my little savings on another package. On the way home, I ate just as many as where missing and put them back on the shelf. Well do you know I went right back up to that shelf and proceded to eat the rest of them. At this point I knew I had a problem. I was broke and Mom was gonna know I wasn't sick. Well being a creative kid I scrounged all the coke bottles and pennies in the house that I could find and returned them with a wagon and got more cookies. Finally I returned home with the Ideal cookies after eating my final bite so that the perfect amout was found by my Mom. At that point is when I realized I had the most "Ideal" day ever with my childhood. After dinner, I couldn't eat much, but I even got to share some more Ideal cookies with my Mom and this is where my life of food-crime began. Ooops, maybe the Yoohoos I stole from Uncle Charlie's sandwich shop was first?!?!?! :)

My dad and I reminisce about them, too. No other cookie compares. It's always about the money. Those Ideal bars were so great, maybe the top notch ingredients didn't leave them enough profit. But when you see fancy cookies today packaged as 8 cookies for $4.00, there must be a market for the hi-price cookies! Nabisco, if you do bring them back, KEEP THE RECIPE EXACTLY THE SAME!!! DON'T cheapen the ingredient deck! (Somehow the chocolate in Hershey candies seems watered down; not as good as the old days).

I have longed for the Ideal cookie since I got married! My best friend in grade school used to get them every week, and she would share! I'm not sure I am that good a person. My mother bought the Ideal peanut butter bars for my father (I don't know why he was allowed to hog them). I would sneak one or two every once in a while. Finally, my father started counting them. Then I just took one, so he could not be sure if his count was off one. Then he started pre-bagging them for lunch. This was a big deal for him since he never packed his own lunch. I would occasionally take an entire bag (I could not take one from the bag, so a whole bag was required). I remember his yelling about the peanut butter bars, and I would feign ignorance. One time my sister's boyfriend was over and things were a bit tense. It just so happened to be a day when Dad took an Ideal bar headcount. He was going on about what happened to "his" peanut butter bars. I remember my sister's boyfriend was incredulous (although he should not have been given stories that I have since heard). He could not believe the Ideal bar interrogation. Wow, how I miss those peanut butter bars. I would buy them in a second if they were around, and I have pretty much sworn off all sugar. I bet they have trans-fats, but I would make an exception and still eat them. I will write to Kraft. If everyone on this list did, maybe it would help. I'll send a link to my sister. Good times.

I had no idea when I typed the name ideal peanut butter bars into google how many like minded souls there would be!! When I was a kid my mom sent them to me at sleep away camp since they were my favorite!! A mouse got into the cupboard and ate one bite from each cookie -- I would happily still have eaten them all, but the counselors made me throw them out --I still get sad thinking about it!! Reeses' stix are not the same but still evoke some of the same taste

My letter wasnt enough to bring em back, lets do this ppl :) Here's Nabiscos reply: Hi Dan, Thank you for visiting http://www.nabiscoworld.com and for your interest in Kraft Foods. It's great to hear from consumers who are looking for our products because it lets us know how much you enjoy them. The tough part comes when we have to share the news that the product you're trying to find has been discontinued. If products don't seem to be popular with our consumers, and demand starts to drop, a decision is made to discontinue the item. Once this decision is made, we stop making the product and the remaining supply is shipped from our warehouse to the grocery stores. At this time there are no plans to bring back our discontinued products, but we are always cooking up something new to help you live and eat better so you may discover a new favorite! Again, thanks for contacting us, and I hope you'll continue to enjoy our products. Kim McMiller Associate Director, Consumer Relations

Do You Need a Marriage Checkup? Enter the Marriage Checkup Project, a program at Clark University that takes the pulse of a couple's bond. "Like a cavity that has a long developmental period, marital distress doesn't come out of nowhere," says James V. Cordova, Ph.D., program director and author of The Marriage Checkup. "The marriage checkup allows couples to catch marital cavities early on and take care of them." To conduct a marital checkup at home, Cordova recommends asking yourselves these questions: Are we curious about each other — and do we express it? "No matter how long you've been together, you don't ever totally know your partner. Recognizing that wakes a couple up to the opportunity to reconnect," says Cordova. "Let yourself embrace your partner's mystery. Then you'll start paying attention and asking questions." The areas to explore are endless: What makes your partner happy? What values does he hold most dear? "Even asking him, 'What did you do today?' is powerfully enhancing to intimacy," says Cordova. Do we each understand when the other needs advice versus simply needing support? "This is a frequent area of miscommunication between couples," says Cordova. "When one partner vents the day's frustrations, the other will often suggest solutions, but usually the first partner just wants empathy. It's hard to fault your partner for trying to help, but it doesn't always feel good — you want support, not the feeling that someone is taking away your power to solve problems." Next time you catch yourself slipping into problem http://www.ugg2u.net/UGG_Langley.html UGG Langley solving mode, practice active listening instead: Try to empathize with what your partner is saying and express understanding of what he's going through. How's the sex? "There's a strong relationship between a couple's sexual health and the overall relationship health, so couples need to take deliberate care of their sex life," says Cordova. "Rather than letting sex become another 'when we get around to it' issue, you and your partner should carve out the time for sex and encourage each other to truly 'show up' for the experience." To "show up," Cordova suggests focusing on communication: Establish eye contact and let each other know what feels good. Nothing will ever compare to Ideal Cookies! The only thing that I have found that even comes close is a Peanut Butter Twix. I hadn't been able to find those for years either, but found one today (hooray!)which got me thinking again about the best cookie ever, IDEAL!

A BIG E-mail Mistake An Illinois man left the snowballed streets of Chicago for a vacation in Florida. http://www.air-shox.com/Shox_FSM.html Shox FSM His wife was on a business trip and was planning to meet him there the next day. When he reached his hotel, he decided to send his wife a quick e-mail. Unable to find the scrap of paper on which he had written her e-mail address, he did his best to type it in from memory. Unfortunately, he missed one letter http://www.gogoaj.com/Nike_air_jordan_3_shoes.html Nike_air jordan 3 shoes , and his note was directed instead to an elderly preacher's wife whose husband had passed away only the day before. When the grieving widow checked her e-mail, she took one look at the monitor, let out a piercing scream, and fell to the floor dead. At the sound, her family rushed into the room and saw this note on the screen: Dearest Wife, Just got checked in. Everything prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Your Loving Husband.

I loved IDEAL bars!! Sorry, Belinda, Peanut Butter Twix is not even close! For one matter, the peanut butter in Twix is way too sweet - and they have milk chocolate instead of a "fudgy" dark chocolate. Nabisco, please bring them back!!!

Yes, please bring the Ideal Peanut Butter Bars back along with the Hey Deys, the crispy chocolate carmel bar. They are both treasured cookies.

I think the last Ideal Bar I bought was in the early 90's in California. I had a friend in Missouri I used to mail seeveral packages at a time to around Christmas. They were his favorite.

I too loved these wonderful cookies. I'd bite a little hole into each end, then suck milk up into it like it was a straw. After a few seconds the insides would be all smooshy. Little Debbie has Peanut Butter Crunch Bars that are very very close to the Ideal Bars.

Oh man, Words Cant Describe how much I loved Ideal Bars. Its great so see how many people besides myself are obsessed with those little crunchy pieces of heaven. I have tried all the "almost Ideal Bars". Little Debbie,PB Twix etc. NOTHING COMPARES, not even close.......Ideal Bars were easily the greatest cookie ever mass produced,SORRY OREO, but its true. FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS GOOD IN THIS WORLD...........PLEASE NABISCO BRING THEM BACK, and as someone else posted, dont skimp on ingredients or alter the orginal recipe in anyway....You cant fix PERFECTION.........

I'm beginning to wonder if these were laced with cocaine! When we'd visit Grandma and Grandpa, they'd open Ideal Bars after dinner, and we'd consume the whole package while watching TV. Yes, we loved the chocolate-peanut butter delights that melted deliciously on our fingers enough to sit through Lawrence Welk! THAT'S true love.

My sister and I just got back from a road trip down the coast of Oregon and then back up I-5 going North. We stopped at a store in Winston, Oregon and we found "Little Debbie's" version of the Ideal bar. "Little Debbie" calls them "Peanut Butter Crunch Bars". They look and taste exactly like the original "Ideal Bar". My sister and I have been wishing the same thing all of you are, Nabisco bring them back, "Little Debbie", put them in all the stores where your snacks are sold...Liz

well I finally found out the name of these cookies that my grandmother always bought for me in the late 60s and 70s. I knew they were peanut butter logs - I couldn't remember the Ideal part. Man I loved those things. I can still taste them and remember the orange and clear cellophane package. Can't believe they aren't made any more. I figured like some of the old candy from the 60s is still made regionall that these cookies would be too. The Little Debbie things are similar but nowhere close to as good. I found this today searching for clues on Nabisco Tidbits (also sadly no longer made) and found ths link and also found Chocolate Snaps - another old Nabisco snack no longer produced. For Nostalgia they really should reproduce some of these old snacks. I would buy them by the case.

I would say that I am amazed with how many people remember Ideal cookies but I am not. These were the best cookies ever and I would give my first born child to have one of these again. I would bite off one end and submerge it in a glass of ice cold milk, it would absorb the milk and the center would be soft encased in the crunchy chocolate. YUMmmm!! Please Nabisco, make a good business decision and bring these back. So many people would buy them just for the memories.

After a little research I have discovered that Nabisco was bought by Kraft back in 2000. Maybe if enough people write to them, the people at KRAFT would consider bringing back this awesome cookie. Weird how so many people miss it like I do. Maybe we're all psychic and they're planning to re-release them in the near future! How's that for wishful thinking?

OK, so what WAS it about the Ideal bars? Are there any other theories out there? I wrestled with my weight as a kid in the late 70's, yet every once in a while my mom would secretly buy a box of these rich logs of dark chocolately goodness, if only to show her undying love for me, her only begotten son. There was a whole ritual to my after-school consumption of this sweetest of sins: We would take them out of the 'fridge (I thought that mom would hide them in there, but now I understand it was because of the low melting point of the chocolate). Then she'd say, "Now, Peter, you know that four is your limit." I would reach into the long, rectangular box; the bars would be cold to the touch, yet even at first contact my chubby hands would leave tell-tale fingerprints on the cookies I touched. Then, I'd eat the ends of each bar first. There was an extra little clot of chocolate on each side of the bar, sort of a remnant of a cooled puddle of chocolate, I figured, that resulted when chocolate was drizzled over the top of each chocolate. Anyway, these little growths were easy to bite off, and would lend a fairly pure chocolate experience, one that only hinted of the peanut butter explosion that loomed on the not-so-distant horizon. Stay tuned for Chapter Two: The First Bite.

I also LOVED the cookies as a child. I am so disappointed they have discontinued them. I also contacted Kraft and received the same message as Dan in April 2009. I am going to keep trying and contacting them. I suggest we all keep contacting them. Unfortunately in todays society, the squeezy wheel gets the oil. They really should bring them back!!!!!

I, TOO, LOVED Ideal Bars growing up and into adulthood. My favorite way to eat them was to first fill a double old-fashioned glass with ice-cold milk. I'd then take a small bite of both ends of the Ideal bar, dip one end into the milk and suck the milk through like a straw. One glassful was good for 3-4 cookies. I thought this was the absolute best snack until I got the bright idea of doing the same thing with coffee...melting dark chocolate and soft peanut butter filling - I was in heaven! There has never, ever been a cookie that has come close to that incredible treat. Sometime after 1976 I asked a Nabisco rep delivering in my local grocery store, where were they? to which he replied, they were no longer stocking them on shelves in the warmer months. Well it wasn't long afterwards they disappeared altogether. NABISCO, WHY DID YOU STOP MAKING THEM???!!! WILL YOU PLEASE BRING THEM BACK IF EVEN FOR A SHORT TIME (possibly like the recent "Pepsi Throwback" offering Pepsi did with their original sugar recipe/formula), BUT THEY MUST BE ORIGINAL RECIPE - PLEEEEEESE???!!!!!!!!!!!

See, the reason these were the BEST cookies is because they were slightly salty AND sweet. (Unlike Girl Scout Tag-alongs which are just sweet.) And that was the key...the slightly salty peanut butter. It was my favorite cookie as a child and I've never found one I liked better since.

I LOVED these exact cookies too. I cannot believe that I found this site. I actually wrote to the Vermont Country Store asking them to see if they could find them. You know how they sometimes can find the recipes to old stuff and remake they do it. They get all this old stuff that is hard to find, unfortunately I never heard anything from them. Please NABISCO bring them back. Apparently they were well loved and a very popular cookie. Thanking you in advance for your cooperation in making our lives better.

I too grew up with the wonder that was Ideals cookies and I miss them terribly. My biggest beef with the 'chocolate peanut butter' type cookies out there today is they are all too sweet! The peanut butter part of the Ideals was slightly salty, and that is what made it so good. I just had a brainstorm on how to get close to that flavor again though! Get the peanut butter filled pretzel bits from Trader Joe's and dip them in melted dark chocolate. Its an idea, and it might be similar. I love the peanut butter filled pretzels at Trader Joe's, so I may just have to try it.
