These were a chocolate covered cookie shaped like a small candybar. Pretty rich. I think maybe Nabisco, but not real sure.

The chocolate peanut butter logs were a staple in my grandmother's cupboard. They were fabulous and I would give anything to have one today.

I have been watching for those Ideal Bars for years and did not realize that Nabisco had quit making them. They are the B E S T Cookie and if Nabisco doesn't want to make them anymore, then someone needs to reintroduce them.
Dave in Texas - December 11, 2007 - Report this comment
I grew up devouring these cookies, they are the BEST ever Nabisco made. I moved from Cali to Texas in 1980, Texas didn't have any...bummer. I thought it was a heat issue...nope. When I revisted Cali they didn't have any as well. They've become extinct. Can ANYONE...convince Nabisco to re-make these cookies...PLEASE

I loved Those Cookies -- Mom used to have to hide them in the 2nd drawer -- they were such a treat -- and I'd love to have them again

They just disappeared! My sisters and I loved them and ordering GS Tagalongs reminds us every year that they've disappeared. Sometimes Mom hid them - they lasted about a day, cost a little more than most other cookies and were worth every dime. Please, Nabisco, bring them back! Millions of other chocolate coated cookies survive shipping and storage - and I guess that most of us would still want them even if the chocolate was melted!
Pete - April 03, 2008 - Report this comment
I hope it's okay to leave this comment here, I was enjoying these cookies in the 60s. Dark chocolate over crunchy peanut butter, I can almost taste them. Perhaps if we all email Nabisco. I actually contacted them and they said if they heard from enough people they might consider bringing them back.

Ideal bars were the best store-bought cookies ever made. I don't know why the hoopleheads at Nabisco won't make these incredibly popular bars anymore. I guess they don't need the money.
Cathy - April 17, 2008 - Report this comment
These cookies RULED! My brother and I could eat a whole package of them in one sitting back when we were kids (ahhh, the good old days of a speedier metabolism!). The folks at Nabisco must just be a bunch of big, dumb, stupidheads to not want to bring them back. My kids love peanut butter and chocolate, I know they would devour these!

I would love it if the Ideal bars would come back. We need to take action for Nabisco to put these cookies back on the shelves, there wouldn't be many in the stores where I live because "I'D BUY ALL OF THEM".

I think I saw the Nabisco executives all testifying before congress and each one in turn said "Ideal cookies are not addictive" and they had to pay millions in a settlement.

Oh my God I too loved them my sisters & I would put them in the fridge as well & I would love to have them back. I have e-mailed Nabisco begging for them to just bring them back as a seasonal item or a limited time only so me & my sisters could stock them in the freezer but I think if everyone would e-mail them maybe they would listen.

I am thinking of starting a "petition" that would go to Nabisco ... we all NEED these Ideal bars back on the shelves of our local stores. "Once Upon A Time" I was told that Nabisco discontinued production of these cookies because of the heat factor in shipping ... (chocolate melting, etc.) -the way I see it ... those of us that LOVED the cookie would be happy to find it in our GROCER'S refrigerator section ... I don't care which aisle it's in ... just bring it back. Now - as to starting a "petition" - any suggestions and who would like to sign?! Let me know! ;-) THANKS

If someone starts a petition or figures out were/how to contact Nabisco I know many people who would sign or write or call.

Is it my distorted memory or were Ideal Peanut Butter Bars only available in the fall and winter? I seem to remember the stores being out of them during the hot months, then one day they would appear on the shelf and for the next few months I couldn’t get enough of them. They were expensive, but worth every penny. I loved them so much that I actually got them as a gift on my birthday.

Ideal Bars were my favorites too (along with peanut butter Spoon Candy, also by Kraft/Nabisco)! I contacted them and received a very narrow minded canned response that they don't bring back discontinued products. They are so missing the boat on a retro line for all of us who remember these products. I don't buy cookies or pudding any more, but I would buy Ideal Bars and Spoon Candy...so would many baby boomers. Those fond memories and feeling like a kid again. I wish I could get through to Kraft/Nabisco!

My favorite cookie above all was Ideal. I grew up in the midwest and I beleive Karen is correct above that the Ideal was only available in the fall and winter. I can recall in the early 70's playing football with the neighbood kids in the fall and after working up a good hunger pain we would walk down the block to the local A&P store and buy a package of Ideal cookies and eat them all. I would do almost anything for a package of Ideal cookies. Little Debbies just don't work for me. PLEASE BRING THEM BACK NABISCO

My people! Finaly found on the web, after years of idly searching. For the longest time, I refused to believe that Ideal bars (we always called them bars) weren't being made anymore. I always figured they were available in some part of the country that I hadn't visited yet. Finally, I accepted that I'll never see them again, but I still reflexively look in the cookie aisle when I'm in the grocery store. Gonna have to visit the Kraft foods site and ask for them back. Kids can't grow up without tasting these!

Oh My God do I have a story about these cookies!!! When I was a kid I used to be a pretty good actor. Well once upon a time my Mom bought these cookies and I faked being sick to stay home from school so I could find where she hid them. It was on the very top shelf. I was a good climber too. I snuck them down and proceded to eat every single one of them in that brown, orange, and see- through wrapper. I can even smell them now, I was about 9 then and now I'm 46. Well it was about 9 AM and I knew I was busted but Mom wasn't due home till much later in the afternoon. So I walked 5 huge blocks in Altadena CA. and spent my little savings on another package. On the way home, I ate just as many as where missing and put them back on the shelf. Well do you know I went right back up to that shelf and proceded to eat the rest of them. At this point I knew I had a problem. I was broke and Mom was gonna know I wasn't sick. Well being a creative kid I scrounged all the coke bottles and pennies in the house that I could find and returned them with a wagon and got more cookies. Finally I returned home with the Ideal cookies after eating my final bite so that the perfect amout was found by my Mom. At that point is when I realized I had the most "Ideal" day ever with my childhood. After dinner, I couldn't eat much, but I even got to share some more Ideal cookies with my Mom and this is where my life of food-crime began. Ooops, maybe the Yoohoos I stole from Uncle Charlie's sandwich shop was first?!?!?! :)

My dad and I reminisce about them, too. No other cookie compares. It's always about the money. Those Ideal bars were so great, maybe the top notch ingredients didn't leave them enough profit. But when you see fancy cookies today packaged as 8 cookies for $4.00, there must be a market for the hi-price cookies! Nabisco, if you do bring them back, KEEP THE RECIPE EXACTLY THE SAME!!! DON'T cheapen the ingredient deck! (Somehow the chocolate in Hershey candies seems watered down; not as good as the old days).

I have longed for the Ideal cookie since I got married! My best friend in grade school used to get them every week, and she would share! I'm not sure I am that good a person. My husband promised me a case of them if we ever saw them again - which we have not. I have tried to substitute the Little Debbies, but they are not a match. Oh how I miss that Ideal cookie!

My mother bought the Ideal peanut butter bars for my father (I don't know why he was allowed to hog them). I would sneak one or two every once in a while. Finally, my father started counting them. Then I just took one, so he could not be sure if his count was off one. Then he started pre-bagging them for lunch. This was a big deal for him since he never packed his own lunch. I would occasionally take an entire bag (I could not take one from the bag, so a whole bag was required). I remember his yelling about the peanut butter bars, and I would feign ignorance. One time my sister's boyfriend was over and things were a bit tense. It just so happened to be a day when Dad took an Ideal bar headcount. He was going on about what happened to "his" peanut butter bars. I remember my sister's boyfriend was incredulous (although he should not have been given stories that I have since heard). He could not believe the Ideal bar interrogation. Wow, how I miss those peanut butter bars. I would buy them in a second if they were around, and I have pretty much sworn off all sugar. I bet they have trans-fats, but I would make an exception and still eat them. I will write to Kraft. If everyone on this list did, maybe it would help. I'll send a link to my sister. Good times.

I had no idea when I typed the name ideal peanut butter bars into google how many like minded souls there would be!! When I was a kid my mom sent them to me at sleep away camp since they were my favorite!! A mouse got into the cupboard and ate one bite from each cookie -- I would happily still have eaten them all, but the counselors made me throw them out --I still get sad thinking about it!! Reeses' stix are not the same but still evoke some of the same taste

My letter wasnt enough to bring em back, lets do this ppl :) Here's Nabiscos reply: Hi Dan, Thank you for visiting http://www.nabiscoworld.com and for your interest in Kraft Foods. It's great to hear from consumers who are looking for our products because it lets us know how much you enjoy them. The tough part comes when we have to share the news that the product you're trying to find has been discontinued. If products don't seem to be popular with our consumers, and demand starts to drop, a decision is made to discontinue the item. Once this decision is made, we stop making the product and the remaining supply is shipped from our warehouse to the grocery stores. At this time there are no plans to bring back our discontinued products, but we are always cooking up something new to help you live and eat better so you may discover a new favorite! Again, thanks for contacting us, and I hope you'll continue to enjoy our products. Kim McMiller Associate Director, Consumer Relations

I'm beginning to wonder if these were laced with cocaine! When we'd visit Grandma and Grandpa, they'd open Ideal Bars after dinner, and we'd consume the whole package while watching TV. Yes, we loved the chocolate-peanut butter delights that melted deliciously on our fingers enough to sit through Lawrence Welk! THAT'S true love.

My sister and I just got back from a road trip down the coast of Oregon and then back up I-5 going North. We stopped at a store in Winston, Oregon and we found "Little Debbie's" version of the Ideal bar. "Little Debbie" calls them "Peanut Butter Crunch Bars". They look and taste exactly like the original "Ideal Bar". My sister and I have been wishing the same thing all of you are, Nabisco bring them back, "Little Debbie", put them in all the stores where your snacks are sold...Liz

well I finally found out the name of these cookies that my grandmother always bought for me in the late 60s and 70s. I knew they were peanut butter logs - I couldn't remember the Ideal part. Man I loved those things. I can still taste them and remember the orange and clear cellophane package. Can't believe they aren't made any more. I figured like some of the old candy from the 60s is still made regionall that these cookies would be too. The Little Debbie things are similar but nowhere close to as good. I found this today searching for clues on Nabisco Tidbits (also sadly no longer made) and found ths link and also found Chocolate Snaps - another old Nabisco snack no longer produced. For Nostalgia they really should reproduce some of these old snacks. I would buy them by the case.

I would say that I am amazed with how many people remember Ideal cookies but I am not. These were the best cookies ever and I would give my first born child to have one of these again. I would bite off one end and submerge it in a glass of ice cold milk, it would absorb the milk and the center would be soft encased in the crunchy chocolate. YUMmmm!! Please Nabisco, make a good business decision and bring these back. So many people would buy them just for the memories.

After a little research I have discovered that Nabisco was bought by Kraft back in 2000. Maybe if enough people write to them, the people at KRAFT would consider bringing back this awesome cookie. Weird how so many people miss it like I do. Maybe we're all psychic and they're planning to re-release them in the near future! How's that for wishful thinking?

OK, so what WAS it about the Ideal bars? Are there any other theories out there? I wrestled with my weight as a kid in the late 70's, yet every once in a while my mom would secretly buy a box of these rich logs of dark chocolately goodness, if only to show her undying love for me, her only begotten son. There was a whole ritual to my after-school consumption of this sweetest of sins: We would take them out of the 'fridge (I thought that mom would hide them in there, but now I understand it was because of the low melting point of the chocolate). Then she'd say, "Now, Peter, you know that four is your limit." I would reach into the long, rectangular box; the bars would be cold to the touch, yet even at first contact my chubby hands would leave tell-tale fingerprints on the cookies I touched. Then, I'd eat the ends of each bar first. There was an extra little clot of chocolate on each side of the bar, sort of a remnant of a cooled puddle of chocolate, I figured, that resulted when chocolate was drizzled over the top of each chocolate. Anyway, these little growths were easy to bite off, and would lend a fairly pure chocolate experience, one that only hinted of the peanut butter explosion that loomed on the not-so-distant horizon. Stay tuned for Chapter Two: The First Bite.

I, TOO, LOVED Ideal Bars growing up and into adulthood. My favorite way to eat them was to first fill a double old-fashioned glass with ice-cold milk. I'd then take a small bite of both ends of the Ideal bar, dip one end into the milk and suck the milk through like a straw. One glassful was good for 3-4 cookies. I thought this was the absolute best snack until I got the bright idea of doing the same thing with coffee...melting dark chocolate and soft peanut butter filling - I was in heaven! There has never, ever been a cookie that has come close to that incredible treat. Sometime after 1976 I asked a Nabisco rep delivering in my local grocery store, where were they? to which he replied, they were no longer stocking them on shelves in the warmer months. Well it wasn't long afterwards they disappeared altogether. NABISCO, WHY DID YOU STOP MAKING THEM???!!! WILL YOU PLEASE BRING THEM BACK IF EVEN FOR A SHORT TIME (possibly like the recent "Pepsi Throwback" offering Pepsi did with their original sugar recipe/formula), BUT THEY MUST BE ORIGINAL RECIPE - PLEEEEEESE???!!!!!!!!!!!

See, the reason these were the BEST cookies is because they were slightly salty AND sweet. (Unlike Girl Scout Tag-alongs which are just sweet.) And that was the key...the slightly salty peanut butter. It was my favorite cookie as a child and I've never found one I liked better since.

I too grew up with the wonder that was Ideals cookies and I miss them terribly. My biggest beef with the 'chocolate peanut butter' type cookies out there today is they are all too sweet! The peanut butter part of the Ideals was slightly salty, and that is what made it so good. I just had a brainstorm on how to get close to that flavor again though! Get the peanut butter filled pretzel bits from Trader Joe's and dip them in melted dark chocolate. Its an idea, and it might be similar. I love the peanut butter filled pretzels at Trader Joe's, so I may just have to try it.

Gratitude to whomever started this stream so that I could possibly get this out of my system. I recall that from late 60's to late 70's my mom would buy the cheap "kiddie" cookies for us, and Ideal Peanut Butter Bars for herself, which she would keep in the fridge. She would always get furious as to why we were sneaking hers when we had our own. Aside from this, I remember not only the great flavors of those treats but the sheer QUALITY of them and all of Nabisco products. Lets face it: Nabisco has changed hands numerous times since Ideal Peanut Butter Bars went off the market and, as far as I'm concerned, the quality of their product has gone WAY down since. Like most American brands. You can wait around and hope but, frankly, I'd be astonished to see anything of their class again.

The reason these cookies were discontinued was because the chocolate would melt during shipping which caused a quality problem. You would think in the year 2010 they could figure out some solution to the melting problem. There are some cookies called Nutter Butter, if you melt some semi-sweet chocolate chips and dip these cookies in the chocolate, it comes fairly close to the Ideal cookie.

I found this site this morning. I've been wanting the name of the IDEAL bars so I could tell Nabisco to make them again. I am emclosing the text of the email. At the end of their email form, they give a phone number. I called it and REALLY let a customer service rep know what they need to do. Nabisco needs to GET RID of all the OREO and Chips Ahoy varieties, and bring REAL diversity back to the cookie aisle. The text of the email is as follows: I know of 4 cookies you need to bring BACK!!!!! The first is the IDEAL Peanut Butter Bars. They're EVEN BETTER than OREO cookies. They were FAR BETTER than ANY peanut cookie and/or candy bar available today, INCLUDING the Nutter Butter cookies you make today. I love the taste of peanut butter and chocolate and the IEDAL cookies are the reason why. When we wanted peanut butter and chocolate at my house when I was a kid in the '60s and '70s, these are what we ALWAYS got. I never even had a Reese's peanut butter cup until I was out of high school because of these bars. Even the Girl Scout peanut butter sandwich cookies at the time, the Savannahs didn't compare, and they were my favorite Girl Scout cookie. You also need to bring back the Lemon Cooler and Cherry Cooler cookies! They were a tart, refreshing treat in the hot summer desert heat of Las Vegas. I've been to a large number of websites and forums where these are mentioned the most. Lots of people WANT these cookies back in production!!! You also need to bring back the Famous Cookie Assortment. They were great to have on hand whenever company came over. It was fun watching everyone scramble, grab, and nearly fight over who was going to get the Bisco's sugar wafers. They, too, were far superior to ANYTHING available today!!!! If you are determined to continue to refuse to bring these superior products back into production, then at least make the recipes for them available to the people who love them and grew up on them, people like me. If I have to bake them myself in order to enjoy them again, I DON'T MIND, because it would be worth the time in the kitchen making them from scratch, by hand!!!!! The cookie aisles at the grocery store today are VERY dull and limited in what is offered for sale. Oreo's and Chips Ahoy are SHELF SPACE HOGS. You need more diversity than this to keep my business!!! I like having more choices than I get now. Over 70% of the cookie aisle from ALL cookie manufacturers is taken up by CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES!!!! Who wants to go to the store for cookies and basically have only one choice???? I certainly DON'T, and my not buying cookies shows it!!!! Since Vintage and Retro (i.e. nostalgia) things are "In" right now. Bring the discontinued cookies I've spoken so passionately for back as a "Classic" or "Vintage" brand. They will SELL, SELL, SELL!!!! Also, consider licensing someone to make these cookies under your aegis. Something NEEDS to be done here!!! If I were the head of NABISCO, or your parent company, KRAFT, this would ALREADY HAVE BEEN DONE years ago!!!!!!

I was thinking about these cookies today and found all your comments. The taste is still on the tip of my tongue. Whenever I eat a Reeses peanut butter stick, I think of the Ideal Bar and how much better it is. Perhaps Nabisco has a deal with Reeses that they will not compeet! The Ideal bar was more of a candy and Reeses sticks are more of a cookie. However, Reeses sticks are too sweet and less rich than the Idea Bar. They might look up that stats every year and laugh but did they stop to think there is a new generation of peanut butter cookie lovers out there. This news is very sad. I was hoping to put the Ideal Bar in my search engine and find them on line somewhere. I remember my mom used to buy the Ideal Bar or I think it was called the whirl. It was a chocolate cookie, shaped like a donut, with a big marshmellow on it, covered in dark rich chocolate. I still see these on the shelf but not the Ideal Bar. Maybe they cost too much for the average consumer but we average consumers have changed and will gladly pay for quality. Anyway, Glad to see I'm not alone. Cheers to all you fellow Ideal Cookie Lovers!

With my father it was always a toss up either the pinwheels or the Ideals, 95% the time it was the Ideals, one of the best of store bought cookies ever. I miss them, I never knew what happened to them, and it's just like everything, something good and to perfection, and some (ok) engineer shut it down...boo! I'm sorry I just read Pollies comment, trust me Reese doesn't come close, I've looked for years for this cookie, and now that I've remembered it's time to hammer Nabisco. Wish me luck. Thanks, Mark

Ok folks, you can duplicate the taste of these Ideal cookies. Buy the Grandma's peanut butter sandwich creme cookies or Nutter Butter, but Grandmas is better to get the taste. Melt the Ghirardelli bittersweet chocolate morsels. Dip cookies in the melted dark chocolate and let cool in the freezer. Taste most like the original Ideal than anything I've tried. You have to keep them refrigerated because the chocolate will melt.

These were definitely the best cookies. Peanut butter, chocolate and that delicious chocolate. As I remember they were not sold in the summer. There is a whole new generation that would love them. Years ago I contacted Nabisco about bringing them back but was told that would never happen. How sad.

Check out Little Debbie's substitute, Peanut Butter Crunch Bars: http://www.littledebbie.com/products/PBBars.asp I can't peel the chocolate off them like I did on the Ideals, but they're quite acceptable.

I bought some Pinwheels the other day and the real chocolate melting in my fingertip reminded me of IDEALS. They were by far the best store bought cookie EVER made. The real chocolate coating made them a seasonal cookie. I don't believe Nabisco would ship them during the summer months, at least here in New England. I'm not a Facebook person but why doesn't someone set up friend of Ideals page and start a 2010 size campaign to get Nabisco to reintroduce this classic to the millions of cookie eaters who were born after the Ideal plug was pulled.

Those of you from the Philadelphia area may remember that the Ideal Bars were originally made by Acme Markets and were packaged as an Acme product until Nabisco bought the recipe from Acme. The reason the taste of those cookies is still memorable to so many people is simple...the high salt content of the peanut butter and the quality of the dark chocolate they used was a terrific combination. I believe Nabisco stopped manufacturing Ideal Bars because the chocolate the recipe called for was too costly to make. Considering how many gourmet cookies are sold now, it's hard to imagine there wouldn't be a market for these at a higher price.
Ann - September 22, 2010 - Report this comment
Nabisco cannot continue implying that there is not enough demand for the Ideal cookie. That is absurd in a world where Reese's Peanut Butter Cups are one of Hershey's #1 sale items. There obviously must have been a quiet, well financed deal made for Nabisco to "bow out" of the competition! Why else would they not capitolize on the chocolate & peanut butter market in 30 yeas?

I used to love Ideal Bars: there was a certain salty sweet inside "crunch", and the way the outside chocolate used to melt, so you had to eat it faster, especially in the summer!

Was there some ingredient used which is now illegal? Was there a special machine needed which cannot get parts anymore? Do we have to wait until the Kraft foods no longer has the patten on the cookies. I'm sure that each Ideal cookie produced will be picked up at the factory by those of us who are in love with them. Please, Please, meet public demand and produce them again.

I too was an Ideal Bar Addict. Yesterday a friend gave me a homemade treat that reminded me a lot of Ideal Bars. She spread smooth peanut butter between two ritz crackers. Then she dunked the whole thing in melted semi-sweet chocolate chips. The chocolate had hardened by the time I ate mine. Not identical, but MUCH better than the Little Debbie's version.

I love that there are so many Ideal bar addicts out there. If you can believe it (and it's true) I actually went through shock treatment using Ideal bars as a food I should not eat (a loose weight gimmick in the 70's which is still used for smoking). It didn't stop me - and I would love an Ideal bar right now. It seems like we ought to be able to recreate a recipe - anyone? Litte Debbie's are okay, but not great - and although the concept of dipping nutter butters in chocolate is appealing - it's not really like an Ideal bar. I was hoping someone who bakes would create the recipe and share it.

I have found a cookie bar made by Little Debbie snacks, called peanut butter crunch bars. They are as close to the Ideal cookie that I have ever found. Not quite the same quality but really close. I also had sent Nabisco a email to bring them back, but alas not yet. The Ideal cookies were also a great treat in our household. They were kept in the little cupboard between the fridge and stove. That was where all the sweets were kept

I used to scour grocery store shelves for packages and buy them out. It was the highlight of dessert. Unfortunately the quality from Nabisco was not consistent. The critical part was having enough peanut butter vs. the cookie and coconut part. If you got a package that didn't have enough PB, they were almost tasteless.

I remember my mom buying these and trying to hide them from my sister and me, but we could find them anywhere! I'm 51 years old now, and my only fear is that if Nabisco ever introduces this cookie again, I would promptly buy a couple of packages of them, pour a nice glass of cold milk, eat through the first package, and probably a few of the second. Perhaps the FDA considered them addictive; I know that I could never have enough of them. Please bring them back, Nabisco!

I've written Nabisco, and now the parent company Kraft, several times and I usually receive a form email back. I think it must be at least 25 years since they were available. And they completely disintegrate in your hand when you take a bite!

These cookies popped into my head the other night, it's unfortunate that they are not made anymore. I agree that they were the best store-bought cookies ever. Followed by Penguin cookies!

My grandmother, mother, step-dad and other relatives use to work for Nabisco (anywhere from office, management & factory workers). One of them worked in the bakery division. I loved these Ideal Peanut Butter Bars tooooo much! I remember, my step-dad bringing fresh cookies out to us when we would pick him up. It's a shame they don't listen to the loyal consumers (as this blog demonstrates)and make that investment into bringing back such a popular item. The real reason they stopped making these cookies is because they used "real" chocolate and it became very expensive over time. I do think it is wise for new management to revisit that decision again...let's hope. Another favorite of mine was Tostettes...I loved them because they were so moist and full of fruit and had a little sprinkle of sugar on top...just the right amount (cold or hot). They were much butter than the dry poptarts we are forced to have as replacements today. I really think Nabisco (Kraft) needs to re-evaluate product selections...and give the people what they want!

Anyway, I wish they would bring them back, That would make the perfect Mothers Day present:)

I contacted the Nabisco Company sometime in the eighties to inquire about IDEAL cookies and was told that many people had also called with the same question. The woman I spoke with was quite nice as I recall but had no answer as to why they had discontinued the product. They sent some coupons to me in the mail and stated they would report my request. Funny thing, as it was, the woman I spoke with said that those were her favorite cookies also. Go figure! :}

If you don't believe me, read this: http://www.inthe70s.com/food/idealcookies0.shtml When are you going to wise up and bring back the best cookie you ever made? Ideal chocolate Peanut Bars were the best cookie product ever produced. Discontinuing them to develop a more profitable product may have made some punk executive a bonus but in doing so the Nabisco brand was greatly diminished. For the sake of money, some men will destroy goodness.

I used to sell Nabisco cookies, and Ideal bars were a great seasonal item, just like Mallomars and Pinwheels. In the 80's, I believe, Ideal just didn't sell that well, and they were discontinued; I have a feeling that as the price crept higher and higher, many of the brands that were never featured were ignored. It's a shame, and the list is rather long...

1970's- When mom said us kids could pick one item during the family once a week trip to the grocery store...we always wanted IDEAL cookies. The Best cookie EVER! Absolutly loved 'em and as kids growing up in the 70's fought over them. Mom finally had to restrict us to 1 each otherwise they never lasted more than an hour after getting them home. Then about seven years ago I found Little Debbies Peanut Bars and a 30 year void in my life has been lifted. While no where as good as the origional Ideal Bars, they are worth it, for a stared population of Ideal cookie fanatics !! Even so, bring back the original recipe!!!!! PLEASE.

My Mother kept these IDEAL Peanut Butter Cookie Logs in the Bread Box part of our shelves......they were maybe three inches long and sorta like a flatted log....dark rich chocolate, didn't taste cheap....and had an inner crispy peanut butter filling, with some moisture....something like a Clark Bar taste, only a bit more of a cookie. I can still see the package,,,,, it was dark brown with a flat orange trim.......they were THE BOMB. Alas, everything Good in life either disappears or changes. Why Nabisco did away with them, I'll NEVER know!!!!! ;o(

Ideal Sandwich Cookies were among the "Best of Nabisco"! I concur with every favorable sentiment expressed about these cookies and if someone from Nabisco were to read all of these comments and if a lightbulb were to go on upstairs, they might see the dollar signs written on the wall. There will always be room in this world for more chocolate and peanut butter. Nabisco could reintroduce these cookies with much fanfare and publicity and then watch their profits soar. They can have the gold...I just want to enjoy these cookies again. Some things should never have been changed, and this was one of them!

Yes!!! These were absolutely the best....I don't remember when they stopped making these, but I DO recall not finding them at the stores and, after a while, forgetting about them, until recently....yes, they only came out in the fall because the delicate chocolate coating would melt in the heat of summer, so they weren't shipped then. I'm surprised they quit making them, with all the fans they evidently have out there....

I googled Ideal cookies tonight and am absolutely STUNNED at how many people LOVED these cookies as much as me!!!!! My Mother would buy these and send them in our lunch boxes for dessert and they we super-delicious!!!! Us kids would rip the package open and eat every single one; I'm sure my Mother got tired of us finding her hiding places in the kitchen. My Dad started hiding them in the hall closet, but we still found them!!! Sorry Mother and Daddy, you couldn't stop us!!! One of my all time favorite cookies in the whole world!!!!! When I first got married I would buy them from the grocery store (back in 1982) and my husband and I would tag team these cookies until there was an empty package left in the cabinet. I think what made these cookies so incredible was the crunchy cookie portion of it, the peanut butter filling which had finely chopped peanuts in it, and the EXCEPTIONAL quality of the chocolate that enrobed this cookie. I think the chocolate was dark if I remember correctly. Whatever they did to make this cookie, it was the BOMB!!! The combination of all the ingredients was GENIUS!!! Why would they ever discontinue making such a fabulous cookie that became so loved by so many people? It makes no sense!! Sorry to say but, "Little Debbie" peanut bars (or whatever they are called) do not even remotely compare with Ideal cookies; not even slightly! There's one candy bar, Peanut Butter Twix, that kind of reminds me of the essence of Ideal, but still not the real thing. The cookie part is chocolate and is a little too grainy, compared to Ideal. All the other cookies out there except for Pinwheels, Mallowmars and maybe a few others aren't any good; in fact they are terrible compared to Ideal. I am going to email cis@nabisco.com (found this email address on another website of other people begging for this cookie to come back). Sounds like this cookie has a "Cult" following...ha! Maybe if everyone emails Nabisco, they'll bring our favorite cookie back. If they ever do, there is going to be mass hysteria and total chaos around the world!! Let's bring them back, people!!! Lets band together!!! Do your part to make this happen...PLEASE!!!

I remember grocery shopping with my mother at the commissary in Newport RI. I remember the package being a single layer of chocolate dipped peanut butter bars, maybe about a dozen lined up back to back. The package was orange and brown, but I guess it could have been clear revealing the chocolate. Shopping with 5 children apparently wasn't easy, so she would bribe us with Ideal bars. She would check out with a half full package. Of course we stuck pretty close to those Ideals. My sister and I were reminiscing and wishing they were still around. It appears we're not alone!

These cookies made every tastebud in your mouth stand up and take notice!!!I've never had a cookie I've enjoyed as much. We kept ours in the fridge in the summer so the chocolate wouldn't melt off!!! I'd BEG the president of Nabisco to re-introduce them, if it would do any good!

Nabisco is a subsidiary of an American multinational corporation. Corporations have the rights of an individual but not the soul of one. Board members cower before the notion of diminished profits and will never stand for the reintroduction of a product, no matter how beloved, if that product cannot yield profits alternatively higher than some other. Nabisco has seen this website; it just doesn't care. Things like fundamental goodness or being a beloved brand doesn’t mater to a corporation; even if its name is Nabisco. It is more true than not, that if you gave Nabisco a goose that laid golden eggs, Nabisco would immediately slaughter that goose rather then pay to feed it. We’re screwed.

These were my favorite treat as a child! I had forgotten about them until the other day when I had a dark chocolate Reese cup. I kept thinking that it reminded me of something, then finally I remembered these cookies. The taste brought back a memory from 30+ years ago. I wish they would bring them back too!

I found this board in 2011. It is now Nov 2016 and still NO IDEAL cookies on the shelf…..why can't Nabisco sell their Recipe for the Ideal Cookie to like a Wegmans?? They are out there, they have Old Time Candy Aisle, maybe just maybe they will put the IDEAL Cookie on Their Shelves and the rest is history…… Just do it Wegmans...

When I was in my 20s and did not have to worry about weight or health, I would consume and ENTIRE box all by myself during an evening with glasses of milk. I have been longing for these cookies and although I could not currently eat them like I did when I was young, I would keep them on hand to eat a few daily. They were absolutely the best! They were better than the Oreo with peanut butter in the middle, and that is saying a lot because I love those Oreos. Nabisco would make a boatload of money putting these back out there on the market. I don't know what is stopping them. I am happy to have finally found the name of my absolutely favorite cookie of my life!!

I’m 55 now but I can still remember those awesome chocolate covered cookie bars I can still taste them they were the best ever cookie ever made in my opinion my aunt that just past at the age of 95 still remembered those cookies. I do remember them mostly being sold in the cooler months as the chocolate would melt very easily and most houses did not have air conditioning in those days. I hope that they bring these delicious cookies back to the grocery store shelves or sell the recipe to someone else.

Please Nabisco bring back these cookies. They were Amazing.

Nabisco if you aren’t going to bring back the Ideal Cookie, then sell the Cookie recipe and rights to some company that will. Or give it to the Girl Scouys. They will make tons of $$$ dough on this cookie annually. Quit messing with your customers Nabisco or whoever owns you now in 2019

This was a huge part of my childhood and teen years for my siblings and parents. We would stock up on them when we knew snowstorms were approaching. I am now 58 years old and have never found a cookie that comes close to the ideal peanut butter log. They were expensive in the 70;s and our family had tight money, but we got these. I have searched over the years to see if they were ever going to come back. I hope nabisco reads these comments and realizes the disappointment to many famalies with the loss of a simple cookie.

I just saw this Comment Page Today; I Agree with Brenda who wrote earlier this very day, and so many, many others eho commented over the past 12 years, that IDEAL COOKIES were the Absolute Best snack of childhood and beyond, to whenever they stopped being made. How can something SO Good, SO Popular, So Beloved, disappear without a trace, a sequel, a follow-up, or especially, an apology?! Bring back, Bring back, Bring back that cookie to us, to us (Sung to the tune of, Oh, you'll get it...:) If Anyone has a Recipe, Please Publish It! It Deserves Open Production at this point...

Hands down the #1 cookie of all time. Growing up in the 60s/70s there were often two packages in the house: One for my two sisters & me, and one for Dad! Very rich & creamy: You needed a tall glass of ice cold milk to offset the decadence of this confection. To date the closest I've seen to this most stupendous but unavailable product is the peanut butter Twix. My best guess why Nabisco quit making them is that they were too expensive to produce; in order to maintain the high quality of the product the retail cost would be unrealistic. Id be willing to guess the cost of a package today would be upwards of $10; I'd pay $15 for a pack!

These cookies were highly addictive! From my earliest childhood I remember that distinctive packaging that housed the best cookies ever made. Years later my husband and I used to joke about it being a "single serving package" because for us it was. Pleeeeease bring them back!

Grew up in New England and now live in California. I have been searching for these damn cookies for decades hoping upon hope I could find them again. My Mom too kept these hidden as much as possible because we would devour them. Best cookie EVAH! Nothing compares. I am glad to see I am not the only “Ideal obsessed” kook out there. It’s comforting knowing my insanity has friends.

They were definitely one of the best cookies made!! I make something very very similar. Take 2 Ritz crackers, put peanut butter between them, dip in melted milk chocolate, place on a buttered cookie sheet - load up the sheet with them and refrigerate for about 5 minutes. Not exactly the same but pretty darn close.

My dad was a Nabisco salesman in WI. Ideals were at our house often. However it was only distributed in the winter months. It was high quality chocolate and Nabisco did want the chocolate to degrade during shipping in the heat of the summer. At least that's what he told me!
