Description
Way before Hostess was bought out by Frito-Lay, there was no such thing as Doritos here in Canada. They were called Taquitos and they came in only 2 flavours...Zesty Cheese, in an orange bag (still exists as a Dorito flavour) but I can't remember what the second flavour was but it was awesome (it came in a brownish bag). I think it may be the Taco flavour mentioned in other postings.

LOL. I was just having a similar conversation about "Taquitos" (and thus had to Google it)... but my American and Australian colleagues have no idea. The Taco flavour was dope.

Yes it was Hostess Taquitos with the mouse on the bag. Problem is, todays zesty cheese doritos are nowhere near as cheesy and tasty. Problem is, orignal Taquitos used more real cheddar, hence, obviously replaced with artificial flavours. Sometimes I can close my eyes with Zety Cheese Doritos and pretend that they are in fact Tostitos, but Im just a dreamer. They will never exist again. Hostess Taquitos are destroyed my corporate takeover.

The name was indeed "Taquitos" in the brown bag. They were so completely flavored one chip had the staying power of chewing tobacco, with the taco flavor that is sadly long gone. The formula is probably in the vault and will reappear (pls pls pls. This is a flashback flavor from my youth that I expect all these posters miss.

omg, i loved those chips so much growing up. The nacho cheese flavour was to die for and i seriously miss those still. There is nothing i've found to compare nowadays.

I used to love these. Especially the Taco.

Doritios has brought back the same chip "Dorito's Taco" flavor I dont know if it is exactly as good...but it is still prettt darn good!!

The Zesty Cheese Taquitos were the best. Nothing Doritos or any other brand will ever compare. It was the only one that the cheese would literally drip from the chip, big chunks of real cheddar.

The taco flavoured taquitos were good, but so powerfully flavourful that i couldn't eat a whole bag in one sitting. My fav was definitely the nacho cheese tacos. I still remember them fondly, and lament that nothing comes close nowadays.

Yes, I miss those two flavours & like someone mentioned earlier the flavour of the Zesty chips had the staying power that Viagra could only dream of having! It was so strong we used to nickname them 'bag of bad breath' as you totally suffered from Dragons breath for hours after eating a bag of these but it was well worth it! I still can taste these chips in my memory as well (please come back!)

I LOVED Zesty Cheese Taquitos, but then once I ate some while I sick (salty tastes so good when you're sick) and sneezed must've got some stuck in my sinuses or something. For some time afterward I could periodically smell them, and while they tasted great, they did not smell particularly good.

I was addicted to those zesty chips in the 80s, does anymore remember the spicy zesty, they were only out for a short time, but were so good.

Ever since Doritos purchased them, I can't eat them anymore. I still remember the mouse logo. I think it's name was El Taquito and he had a sombrero. I used to call them moussie chips. Miss them so much. Hopefully one day they will make them again but I doubt it.

I actually wrote to Frito-Lay a few years back, and begged them to bring back the Taco flavour from the Taquitos days. They did a retro thing last year, but unfortunately, I didn't get the huge canker sore on my tongue the original recipe used to provide... I used to lick off the powder coating like it was Fun-Dip.. Oh the good old days

Whether it was Hostess or Frito Lay, Zesty Cheese was, and remains, the greatest snack food around.

I feel certain they were burried and all records destroyed as they likely cause all manner of cancers. How can somethign that tastes so good not be bad for you? I often dream of a warehouse somewhere full of the last unsold batch...if only.

I think they found a way to save a few pennys by changing the taist.

Hostess Taco-flavoured taquitos and a Cuban Lunch chocolate bar...oh to be back in those days again!!!

I vividly remember these! They still sold them right up to the very early '90s. The cheesy flavour was a lot stronger AND the chips were a lot oilier. It would leave an ungodly mess on one's hands but by gawd did it ever taste good! The Doritos version of Zesty Cheese pales in comparison. I still will get a bag every now and then but I find if you buy the smaller bags the chips hold their taste a lot better and is closer to the originals but the regular size bag loses a lot of that punch.

Remember how the zesty cheese Taquitos sometimes had mini balls of cheese in them? I miss those chip so much! Mind you zesty cheese Doritos seem to have simulated their original flavour but man if they were to release a retro throwback limited time edition they would quickly discover a new best seller reborn!!
