I have found these at Walmart and Publix. Little Debbie makes something similar (and not as expensive).

My mom would never buy these, but my best friend Vonda would always sneak me one of hers. I don't know if anyone else feels the same, but didn't they taste better in the 70's when they were wrapped in actual foil?

Funny but I loved these as a kid. I have had them as an adult and the chocolate has the consitency of plastic. Is it the packaging, a change of recipe, or have I simply become spoiled with finer chocolates? Twinkies don't seem to have changed.

You are correct AJ, they tasted much better back then. Everything was better, and bigger back then. Also these were much better than Little Debbie Swiss Rolls.

Hostess Ho Ho's were arguably the best chocolate cake snack on the planet in the 70's, when they were wrapped in foil and made much differently than they are today. I tried one for the first time in a LONG time the other day, and it was like a plastic-wrapped cat turd! I will never buy another Hostess product if this is an indicator of the direction they have taken.

Yeah, Ho Ho's were the bomb back then. The were much bigger, better tasting. Now there the size of your thumb and taste like -- well nothing like they did -- which is a shame. Today I'd say Hostess Ding Dongs stand up still but the rest of their products have degraded along with their cupcakes.

Agr aeeing with Todd's comment: Quality of most Hostess products (the exception, fruit pies) has fallen, since the 1990s, when Interstate Baking and the old Continental merged. HO-HOs were first made available in 1969. A three-pack was a quarter, a box of ten was 89 cents. I think sugar substitutes may be the cause of flavor problems. The rest is simple economics: Higher cost, lower quality. Now, a three-pack is a dollar forty, a ten-pack, four dollars.

Does anyone know the actual size in inches of the original ho hos? They are so small today

After going over more old comic books, I did find one ad for Hostess Cupcakes with Spider Man (Laff A Lympics/Marvel dated April, 1978). He defeats an unnamed villain, bald-headed, who cloned himself into ten. Spider Man uses Hostess Cupcakes to weed him out among the clones. There may be a comic book ad for Ho-Hos with Hulk (strange combination).

Hostess Cupcakes are about half the size they were in the 70's

I've been telling my husband that Ho Ho's were SO good years ago when they came in aluminum foil. There is a BIG flavor difference and I notice it in the twinkies as well. Everything was better back then!

What has happened to all my childhood goodies! All hostess products suck now what are they doing over at hostess? Foiled hoho's rocked in the 70s bigger creamier better all around! Twinkles are tiny why? Help
70s Ho Hos - July 05, 2016 - Report this comment
70s Hohos in the tin foil was way better and different. Chocolate and the filling was different. I vaguely remember the filling being just a little bit more like a ding dong, but still different than that and way different than it is now. Someone needs to research this very important fact.

wasn't the chocolate black years ago? Now they are brown.
Rob Lambert - September 30, 2017 - Report this comment
You're right, Buck. The old Continental/Interstate companies used a darker chocolate coating and inner wrap. The new Hostess is trying too hard to compensate. The flavor just ain't right today.

Does anybody remember the peanut butter ho ho's? I vaguely recall them being available for a limited time in the late 60's/early 70's.
Rob Lambert - February 20, 2018 - Report this comment
Peanut Butter cream Ho Ho's sold on a test market basis in 1973. Many compared this with the Reese's Cups. The new Hostess company brought these back recently. Continental first introduced original Ho Ho's in 1969, competing with Little Debbie Swiss Rolls.
