Description
Dagnabbit, you're right...orange was available at one point in Boston at least! I can still remember the taste, slightly orangy and a little creamier taste than the chocolate Big Wheels. Loved Big Wheels!!! I lived on them!!! I remember the bright yellow wrapper with Chief Big Wheel on them -- two cakes per pack as I recall.

I absolutely LOVED Hostess Big Wheels. I used to eat them everyday when I was a child ( NO LIE ). Hostess tries to say they are Ding Dongs now but, Ding Dongs DO NOT TASTE ANYTHING LIKE BIG WHEELS. I honestly think Hostess had change the ingredients. To me Ding Dongs taste like they have cheaper ingredients like, equal sweetner instead of real sugar. I would love it if Hostess brought back Big Wheels with the original ingredients that they were made with.

How about the original Twinkie - they changed the creme inside those bad boys... remember how they used to have that grainy sugar taste... not the current fluffy cream which is absolutely nasty! I used to love the Big Wheels too - and agree they had a distinct taste... I grew up just North of NYC in the 70's...

Yea, I miss Big Wheels too!!! My mom got them because she didn't want to pay the price of ring Dings. I was bummed at first until I took my first bite if a Big Wheel. It was a wrap after that. I would get one of those tasty rounds in my lunch and naturally ate it first, since life is short. You could peel off the chocolate and then eat the cake later. That was very hard with Ring Dings and they don't taste nearly as good. I used to love Suzy Q's as well but I think they changed the cream and it just isn't the same. So sad. Hostess is just a shadow of what it used to be.

Big Wheels were the eastern version of Ding Dongs. They were exactly identical.

Didn't the commercial used to have Chief Big Wheel and Little Big Mouth? Didn't they used to say, "It's a cake- It's a candy!! It's 2 taste treats in one!!"? I was only a teenager then, but I used to like Big Wheels and the commercial.

I grew up eating a Big Wheel every single day in my lunch (late 70's, early 80's)! LOVED THEM. I am from the Hartford, CT area. Around the mid-late 80's they changed them to King Dons but they were NEVER like Ding Dongs--very different, the outer chocolate is thinner on a Ding Dong and the Big Wheel cake was more chocolatier. I would love to get some for my kids to try...

I agree with everyone saying to bring back Big Wheel cakes. They were awesome and could start a new crazy for the failing Hostess Brands. It would be a shame to see the company go down with such an awesome history.

I called Hostess a few years back and they told me they used to use butter creme in suzy Q's and twinkies etc but they did change to a different cream, I suggested they go back to original but seems like they didn't care what I said, I guessed its cheaper to use this horrble creme they use now, well anyway I stopped eating vHostess- Drakes long ago because none of the cakes were the same, I suggest everyone buy Entenmanns cakes they are as good as they were since the 1970's

I used to eat Big Wheels everyday as a child. I am 45 years old now and can still see and taste then. They were the best. I don't care what anyone says, Ring Dings are not the same. Ring Dings were horrible. Big Wheels were the best. Second best were Chocodiles. Bring back Big Wheels.

I remember cutting out baseball cards on the back of the BigWheel boxes. Nothing tasted better than a big wheel

@Dave, you are so right on both points: Big Wheels rule and nothing can replace them. And, Chocodiles were a big favorite of mine. I remember coming home after school to open that light chocolate, cream-filled goodness, wrapped in that crinkly foil unlike any other. I tell you the truth, if I were to get the opportunity to unwrap another in my life time would be golden. I just purchased some Twinkies this week and shared them with my kids and their instant fans. Please, please, bring Big Wheels back! You have lots of fans and we're waiting.

I used to eat Big Wheels as a kid. What stands out most to me now as being different is that they were foil wrapped back then. I think the foil wrap preserved the freshness better. Similar products out today are wrapped in clear plastic. I think foil became too expensive to use but IMO it did affect the quality of the product. I wish the new company that took over Hostess/Drakes would go back to the foil wrap.

Since hostess went out of business and is now resurrected by a new company, maybe writing to them can bring back butter creme of 70s and get rid of this new creme.

My mom wishes I could try Big Wheels today, they're the best. And she agrees about the foil wrapping as well. BRING BACK THE BIG WHEELS!!! I would like to experience one in my lifetime :-)

Nice call on the baseball cards Dave, I have at least a full set of them. We should all write to the new Hostess/Drakes Co. and tell them of our memories of the BIG WHEEL and the true difference of these fine cakes over anything else on the market today.

They were called Big Wheels when I was a kid growing up in the Washington, D.C. area. They were individually foil wrapped, which kept them fresher and moister. When they stopped foil wrapping them to save money, the quality changed dramatically. They aren't bad, just not the way they used to be. I preferred them as they were when they still individually wrapped them.

I remember Big Wheels being individually foil wrapped as well. Yellow box with baseball cards to cut out on back. Being a kid in the 70's Hostess was my preference...today's "Hostess" ding dongs are ok, but I would like them to bring back the original Big Wheel.
