Description
Fandangos were a corn chip snack made by Frito-Lay. As I recall, they were shaped like a shell, like the Shell gasoline symbol, and about the size of a quarter. They came in two flavors, green onion and pizza. They were around for only a few years in the very early '70s. Man, they were good. I still miss them.

Holy Cow! I loved green onion Fandangos! I've asked several friends if they remember them and no one does. I wish Frito- Lay would start making them again.

I was hooked on them the week they came out. Galloping Green Onion and Buckboard Pizza, they were both good. 39¢ for the large bag which today probably would retail in the $2.49 price bracket. Frito-Lay marketed them with a Wild West theme for some reason.

To give some good news, Fandangos are still around. They are a hot seller in Brasil. My wife is Brasilian and is hooked on them. The flavors have changed though. Now it is available in ham flavor and cheese. The ham is reeeeeally good. We have called Frito Lay to see if they can bring it here and all they said is that they would pass it on. I have noticed that they applied for the Fandangos trademark name in North America, so that could be a good sign!

I remember vividly about Fandangos! Such amazing flavors. I was about 10 years old when they came out and as I recall didn't stay around for long. This was in Texas, around 1969.

I am 57 years old, I loved those fandagos too. They came out aroind the same time as funyuns. The kept manufacturing, funyuns, but did away with the best snack i ever had. This girl’s father used to work @ a store that was goin’ out of business, she bought her classmates a large bag of each of these chips each day til they were all gone. She had said she was goin’ to bring me a bag of fandangos, but never did. Boy do I wish they’d bring those fandangos back. I just wish they bring them back. Best snack ever. They brought back the taco flavored doritos, in it’s orinal packaging. I think about fandangos all the time. Just happen to put the name, and found, i’m not alone.

I helped my dad, a Frito-Lay salesman, during the summer that they first came out. I used to make the store deliveries with him as a teen. He told me that Frito used the SW Zone of Frito to test the sales against other brands. It did well in his district, and even in his Zone, which included almost a quarter of the US, but over all sales were not there. He said he thought it was something else. Like the "Frito-Bandito" lawsuit, remember the little pincel erasers, and cool stuff that came in the bags? I still can't stand the Mexican gov for suing Frito over it. We both loved those two flavors of Fandango's! I rember going out to his Frito truck on Fridays and getting a couple of bags each for the weekend. Our family lived them! He said that the company faced some kind of copyright infringement on the design, logo, or name and fought it until they were forced to withdraw. Just like the Firto Bandito thing. Anyway that's what the company told him at the time. Everyone that remembers them, loves them and wishes they would bring them back. Then when I tell them about what happened...a good thing ruined by lawyers. Go figure! I often wondered what if they changed the shape, name or something, why couldn't they bring them back?

Oh how I remember eating the FANDANGO CHIPS....Couldn't believe FRITO quit selling them...They were always a treat at my Grandfather's Sinclair Filling Station along with an iced cold RC COLA...Don't think they should have ever let that bag of chips slip away...

From the prime time TV vault, cartoon spokesman W.C. Frito (Fields) introduces Fandangos in a commercial which aired on "Laugh-In" over NBC (9/20/71). Months after cigarette ads were banned on TV, the networks scrambled to find new advertisers, and the fading Rowan & Martin show was no exception. With the departure of Arte Johnson and Henry Gibson, "Laugh-In" had seen much better days. Even Gary Owens had fewer mock announcements, and no longer interacted with the cast in skits. Fandango was like the Chum Gum of corn snacks. Little promotion and often ignored. By 1974, disappeared from grocery shelves. Fandango was a harder corn chip, intended for adult consumption.

I remember them. When I eat Doritos, I’m reminded of those flavors. The ranch Doritos remind me so much of the green onion flavored ones.
