Description
It was the apple flavored soda that actually had about 2% alcohol in it. They had to pull it off the market because kids would buy it. We did because it tasted good. I was too young to care about the alcohol.

I remember this soda. Was in a Green and white can,I think. It was made by Anheuser-Busch Co.( I called A/B 314-577-2000),they had limited info.Made in 1978-79. I don't think it had more than .05 % alcohol. I agree it tasted appleish. A kid would have to drank about 20 cans to feel anything. I am sure after 4-5 cans, you were finding the nearest tree to ***. By then, 19 yo. in(1978) could buy beer. in Il. I liked the soda, was different... P.S. Cool Website, Thanks.....

Remember this soda well. It tasted good and I remember it having approximately .05% alcohol. I was 18 or 19 at the time and didn't care about the minute quantity of alcohol. At that time we could buy beer legally in MA. We were all pretty upset when they pulled it from the market. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

I remember chelsea too. I loved it. It had a distintive flavor that you can closely replicate my mixing Budweiser and Coke. I know that sounds strange but it actually tastes just like chelsea. Mike

I used to buy this soda after helping my dad paint in the summer. I was really sad when they stopped selling it. Chelsea was really good!.

I remember buying this stuff when I was about 8 at the local Dairy Mart in Springfield MA. Me and my friends would drink 2 or 3 and act like we were wasted, heh. I think it came in a green bottle shaped like Lowenbrau, with a foil top, perhaps this was the pre-curser to the modern day wine cooler? The taste was definitely unique (and pretty good from what I remember). Long live the memory of Chelsea Soda!

I think me and Krystof ran in similar circles. I remember buying at DM near Dwight Rd. in Springfield,MA. It was definately good stuff. Now, can I sue the producers for my fondness of alcohol now? LOL

Loved Chelsea Soda! I remember when they pulled it hearing that they dug a big hole and buried it all... and friend and I were planning to find the hole and get it ALL!!! Yep... we use to buy it by the 12 pack and sit out back of the liquor store and drink it... we were about 12 years old then. :)

Why was there any alcohol in it at all and why did they sell it to kids? I don't know, but I bought it, drank it, and liked it. I was about 12. I remember taking it to school for lunch in the thermos of my Muppet Show lunch box. I let some "popular" kid taste it. He acted like it was a big deal. Years later during high school I think that kid had become a "head." I hope that sip of Chelsea didn't do him in! Just kidding.

I remember buying and drinking chelsea soda at the Country /store in West Springfield. I used to ride my bike there as a kid, so it had to be in the late 70's. We would drink it outside and people would walk by with a curious look on there faces as to why a 10 year old kid would be drinking beer. It tasted pretty good.

My sister just asked if we remembered this soda in the 70's that had a little alcohol and would have a beer head to it when you poured it. We googled it and this website came up. So interesting to see so many other people remembered this drink and really like it. She said felt so grown drinking it. LOL!

Springfield must have been a big test market area. We use to run to the store on Ft. Pleasant Ave for a chelsea and a marathon bar...those were the days.

Chelsea was in the shape of a Michelob bottle and was a GREAT soft drink. To get anything in way of a 'buzz' (as was thought) you'd actually would have had to consume about 500 of them. It tasted so good and I'm sad it went away. Besides .... all that if you wanted to get a buzz ? Seriously? That's ridiculous ! great soda and bad rep from the frickin' advocates. Too bad it's gone.

I lived in Harrisonburg, VA in 78-79 when this soft drink came out. Being all of 12 and 13 years old we thought we were really cool drinking Chelsea because it looked so much like beer. The color of the soda and the look and shape of the bottle both looked like beer. The funny thing is that for all the hoopla about it marketing to kids to get them acclimated to beer the drinking age was 18 and even as a 12 or 13 year old we all had freinds who had older brothers and sisters in high school who would gladly by us beer (and did). Also, my mom would send me to the 7-11 to buy her and my dads cigarettes. The clerks didn't even bat an eye. Anyway, i loved Chelsea soda and was dissapointed when it was no longer available. Then we went back to Vernors and Ironbeer soda.

"Peel, Peel, Peel....Peel-a-Chelsea" Anyone else remember that TV commercial jingle?
TobiasJackson - August 06, 2016 - Report this comment
Oh, how I remember Chelsea and the commercial Kelly R. referenced "Peel, peel, peel....Peel a Chelsea"! That was the coolest part, having to tear the paper off the bottle before opening! I was probably 14. My friend Lori and I used to fill the cooler and take our boat out on the lake. We'd sunbathe, read Tiger Beat magazine and sip Chelsea!! Made us feel so sophisticated!

We had it here in New Orleans, came in a little Michelob looking bottle. If I remember right, they had 2 diff type, one with a red label, and one with a blue label? I remember it being the color of apple juice, but carbonated. Tasted fruity, and a little like that drink Zima that came out later tasted. My mom had NO clue about the alcohol in it, and bought me 6 packs of it all the time. I'd even take it to catholic school (St Cecelia)in my Evel Knevel lunchbox. I was 9 years old in 1978 so I guess 3rd grade or so.

I was certain I was the only person on earth who remembered Chelsea Soda! I was singing that jingle to everyone, and no one had heard of it. I’m glad I found this, no I can go back to being regular crazy. Don’t just pour a soft drink, peel a Chelsea!

I actually did get drunk off these back in the late 70's! I drank about a million of them in a two-hour period and got a buzz. My uncle was staying with us at the time and I was so out of it I wound up taking him to bed with me at the tender age of 11
