Me, too! Been craving the chocolate breakfast squares for decades!! I loved that they weren't overly sweet and they had an odd sawdusty kind of texture, but holy cow I want them and I NEED them. Nothing else comes close to what a fabulous treat they were :( grumble grumble
Jamie - June 12, 2008 - Report this comment
I'm just so glad someone besides me remembers these! I've asked people all over the country if they've even HEARD of them, to no avail. Babette, too right, not very sweet, kind of dry and super-dense, but oh those Squares...
Joy - July 05, 2008 - Report this comment
Oh my Gosh!!! I had these every morning on the school bus. The chocolate ones. A delicious dry type of brownie. I e-mailed the company, and got some stupid response about the bars. I wish these would come back! Yum, it makes me drool.

I loved the Chocolate ones. They were kind of dry but tasty. If they would bring them back for old time sake for a bit they would sell right out. So long as they used the original recipe, otherwise we will know.

Oh, those yummy breakfast squares, what memories. Saturday mornings in front of the tv, watching cartoons, having a package of breakfast squares (chocolate) and a big glass of milk. As I recall, they came 2 to a package. There were also 2 kinds of chocolate ones, one had a white cream in the center, the other had a fudge cream. Anybody else remember this?

I am so glad I found this site! No one else has ever heard of these. I loved them. They were a treat in our family. We only had them when we went on vacation. Only had the chocolate variety and yes, you describe them exactly the way I remember them-a dense brownie, YUM! Please bring them back!
Bo;; - July 13, 2009 - Report this comment
The store in my hometown never carried them. When I go to go to Grandma's with my Mom, we would always stop at the store near her house and do our shopping. if I was good, we would get some. The pinnacle was getting to split a pack on the way home. I was the oldest and my Mom used to take me to the DR for my allergies and leave my brothers with Dad. That was a memory I had been thinking about for a long time. I just had a Little Debbie Zebra cake and it reminded me of breakfast Squares. Man, I wish they would bring those back.

Those breakfast squares were the BEST. I ate them everyday before school. I would love for Carnation to bring those yummy squares back. I would buy them all up from my local store. The chocolate ones were my personal favorite but my mother always bought chocolate and vanilla.

Denise - August 12, 2009 - Report this comment
I only remember the chocolate brownie bottom and I believe a chocolate type frosting but they were the best! I don't remember any type of filling. They came in twin packs in a box of 8 or 10. I rarely ever ate breakfast after they quit making these. I would buy these for myself and my children if they brought them back!
Tony - August 26, 2009 - Report this comment
My vice was the spiced bars with milk! I would save up my allowance and buy my own, since mom wouldn't buy them. I sent an e-mail to the company suggesting that sales might not have been through the roof in the 70's...but with the ability to target via the internet, and the fact that we're probably all 40+ and doing ok financially...we could afford to pay a premium...but all they did was put me on a mailing list....

I still crave those dense cakes with the butterscotch-like icing. On the mornings that I didn't drink Carnation Instant Breakfast before school, I would eat a Carnation Breakfast Square and drink a big glass of cold milk. Oh, Carnation [or Nestle'], please bring them back...or give us the recipe!!!
Angela M. - August 30, 2009 - Report this comment
Since my previous post, I found out that neither Carnation nor Nestle' were the manufacter of the Breakfast Squares. You can see a photo of the box at the flickr website. (Unfortunately, I can't post a link here.) But, you can search with the terms "1970's General Mills Breakfast Squares". Ahh, the image brings back delicious memories!

Wow! Both my mom and I miss Breakfast Squares! I signed the petition too. Here's my petition comment: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/breakfastsquares/?e "Growing up in the 70's-80's, I never knew a time when these weren't in our cupboards. I always bugged my mom to let me have some but she was so frugal with those things. We were both completely in denial when she found out they had been discontinued! Maybe if she and other moms who weren't so stingy with their kids' treats had just given in to our demands, these tasty, cakey, squares of joy would still be available. Oh mom--why did you have to be so stingy????? Please, General Mills, bring them back!"

Breakfast squares were the only filling food leaving you with lots of energy all day. And you could eat them for a snack also. That's about the only food I really miss and have searched for. Why did they go away anyway? Bring them back please.

I remember having these after school waiting for basketball practice to start. Weren't these suppose to "replace" a meal, at least that's what my mom thought so during basketball season she'd have one of those by my plate each morning for like I said afterschool thinking she gave me something to "fill me up" until I got home at 8 o'clock that night. I did like them but always was left hungry. lol

Why dont they bring the Bfast SQUARES back???? I have been wanting them for over 25 years too!!! For crying out loud Put them back on the shelf! So many people love them, want them, will buy them! I will buy them by the case! I ate practically the entire box after school as a kid. Mom use to hide them from us, but I always found them! These Bfast squares would sure taste a whole lot better than the crap they have out there now! Was there an ingredient that was illegal?? that would be the only reason to stop it. PLEEEEEEZE...we are begging you!!! Bring them back! Bring them back!!! They will Sell, They will sell!!!!!

Ok, here is the next idea. Who is with me on trying to copy the recipe and making our own millions??? If we wait on Carnation or Nestle's or whoever made it, then we may die by then. OMG my mouth is watering just thinking about it! Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry, Cinnamon, Bring them all back!!!!! ;-)

I've actually moved into action mode on this and have a retro-sweets (that's the type of aficionados we are in fact) expert looking into it. They are selling in Europe where I am, but if they find anyone who has the rights and is making these today I should find out and I will post the info! You who remember eating breakfast squares during the 1970's on school mornings probably also remember hearing the theme from "Uncle Waldo" on morning TV before schooltime?
Gunnar - May 09, 2010 - Report this comment
I did some checking and it appears that our beloved B-squares met with staunch media criticism already in 1973 on nutritional grounds. They apparently contained mostly fat, water and sugar and the nutritionally-oriented consumer media were at the time already gathering forces against products labelled as nutritional and targeted towards children. But we're adults now and a square now and then will certainly do not harm!

I still find myself in the breakfast aisle, hoping that one day I will find the tasty treat of my youth. Until finding this site, I didn't even know what they where called. Hopefully, someday, they will make them again. Wouldn't that be a great day. It's the little things we remember that bring the most joy.

My best Breakfast Square memory is from around 1976 - Christmastime. I was 12 and I'd wake up before the others, go downstairs and turn on the Christmas tree lights. Then, I'd get a package of squares (any and ALL flavors!) and lay on the couch, watching the lights blink in the light of early dawn and enjoy my breakfast before having to get dressed and ready for school. I recall there being 4 flavors, two varities of chocolate, vanilla and cinnamon. I preferred the vanilla and cinnamon.

I had these for breakfast almost every morning before school back in the early 70's. Kinda dry but ehe icing was good. Tried to split them from top and bottom with the top having all the icing. Too bad us consumers can't always have what we want. Wish everyone knew the difference between the Carnation ones and the square general mills ones. Totally different!

God, yes. I loved those, can still remember their unique flavor and consistency. Chocolate, of course. Always. Those sooo need to come back in the worst way. I remember not understanding (as a kid) how something so incredible as these could be discontinued. They were fabulous -- Carnation et al. needs to bring them back, and they have to be the same as they were, that same taste and texture.

OK, I took a chance doing a search for one of my favorite childhood foods thinking that I wouldn't find anything and maybe I imagined them, but low and behold, not only did I find that they did exist but that I'm not alone who loved these. Loved them so much too! Did they have some super-secret addictive drug (maybe just sugar and fat?) in them that has caused me to search for them over and over for 30+ years? Favorite was cinnamon, then a butterscotch and vanilla tie. At this point, even if they came out with chocolate only I might buy out the store. (Used to let my sister have those.)

These things were a classic, had them practically every day for breakfast before heading off to school. I can taste the chocolate ones right now! The list of ingredients read like the inventory at a chemical supply house, mmmm. They were the ultimate manufactured food, 3-layers laminated and coated top and bottom, looked like they were cut out of 3/4" lacquered plywood.

OH MY GOODNESS!!! It is so totally weird to read comments from other people that are JUST LIKE reading your own mind... Like: I thought I was the only one that remembered them. The chocolate was to die for. Why did they disappear? PLEASE BRING THEM BACK!!! They would definitely sell compared to whats out there now. Nobody else has ever heard of them. Nobody remembers them. I can still taste the chocolate ones. They were so chewy and dry. They were so good! I miss them. My favorite as a kid. I have still been searching for these even after 30 years. SERIOUSLY....... If all of us have been searching for these for the past THIRTY YEARS for these to reappear on the store shelves, they must have been pretty awesome, I'm sure you would agree! GENERAL MILLS - PLEASE BRING ORIGINAL BREAKFAST SQUARES BACK!!!!!!! Please, please, PLEASE!!!

I remember these, especially the chocolate ones! Does anyone have a recipe close to the original version? Similar to a very dense cake but not a lot of sugar, more like a chocolate malt flavoring to it instead of sugar. One of those yeast-less cakes with malt flavoring. Glad to see others share the same taste!

Chocolate Breakfast Squares is my all time favorite food. I ate two squares every day from the age of five until I was ten years old. Then they stopped selling them and we couldn't get them anymore and I was heavily bummed out and for life. I still crave them and have wanted more for thirty six years now. I have never found a chocolate confection as delicious as a breakfast square. All I can get is a ordinary brownie. But every time I eat a brownie I wish it was a chocolate breakfast square.

I'm right there with all of you! I can taste them and feel the texture now. I miss them and would be so happy for them to be in my life again! I see that in the past people have contacted General Mills, started petitions and even set up a fb page. I think that is enough for General Mills to consider bringing them back! If not, maybe a copycat recipe out there somewhere?
Kim - January 22, 2014 - Report this comment
I emailed General Mills regarding Breakfast Squares, asking if they will bring them back to the shelves or would provide a copycat recipe if not the actual recipe and I was told that the product wasn't as successful as anticipated and once a product is discontinued it is very seldom ever brought back. Also, the recipe is proprietary and is not available. :( No good news any where in that email darn it!

Listening to "Mind Games" by John Lennon, and I always associate that song (as once back in '73 or so I was eating a breakfast square while listening to it) with Carnation Breakfast Squares. I probably had them a few times while hearing the song. But it means they came out around the same time.

I noticed this link says carnation breakfast squares. Carnation made bars. The yummy goodness from the 70's are General Mills. I loved the chocolate ones were my favorite. Smeared with peanut butter and a side of ice cold milk! I agree about getting the company's attention but let's make sure we get the right one!

I remember these fondly. Stumbled on this thread looking for them. I used to hassle my mom to buy them whenever I went shopping with her. Loved the chocolate ones. She had to put the box on a high shelf to keep me away from them. I would get one package a day until the box was gone, then I would have to go back to hassling her to buy more. When they were discontinued, I searched high and low for them in every store we went to. I was always disappointed. I still look for them when I walk down the breakfast isle, hoping one day they will return. I remember one year my mother allowed me to use my Christmas money to buy a box and I ate the whole box in one day. I wish they would bring them back!

I love these squares too, I was just a young child. I only could get them at my babysitters. My mom could not afford to buy them. I would love to taste one now days....lol I bet they would taste horrible because of all the other foods in life I have experienced. I didn't get a lot of tasty treats as a child so that's probably why I all thought they tasted soooooo good. Just a thought. I remember some old movies that I thought "oh my! that was the best movie, the best graphics" and then when I watched the re-run 30 years later- I thought I would laugh my head off--- I thought that was good?!

I distinctly remember that they changed the recipe for these things sometime along the line and the revision did not turn out well. I went from loving them, to feeling betrayed by them when I took a bite. If someone could bring them back with the early recipe I would buy them regularly. I couldn't tell you which ones I liked the best they were all so tasty. I would feel so excited when my Mom would buy a variety pack of these things, I'd want to hoard them like Golem holding his precious. This was my favorite breakfast food from my childhood.

Geez just sending all these comments & Memories of eating these should make the company put on the shelf again! Put them in the candy isle if its all sugar, Call them Candy Squares! who cares what they are called ...just make them taste the same! and they could make healthier I would think adding stevia or other natural sugars that have come out since the 70's They remind me of an Extra thick pop-tart in a square instead of rectangle;)

If General Mills has no intention to ever bring them back, it might make them some money to sell the recipe to those of us who would love to make our own breakfast squares. I am sure making some profit off an old product is better than the recipe sitting in some file cabinet collecting dust and making nothing for the company. Maybe they could take advanced prepaid orders for the products and make them a couple times during the year for those of use who would pay to have them back. I am sure their would be several thousand people ordering cases of the breakfast square's to tied us over until the next production. There could be a nice little profit for them, either way it's better than getting nothing for an old product that people really want back.

I feel the same as all of you- i can still taste those chocolate squares. Over the past 4 decades, i have bought and tried every chocolate breakfast bar i could get my hands on- none ever tasted one bit like the GM Breakfast Squares. But i have found something recently that is really as close as i think we'll ever get to that exquisite taste. Think Thin High Protein Bar: chocolate fudge. OMG it's so close- not too sweet or dense, brownie like feel, mildly chalky center. The first bite sent me reeling from the similarities. Try it and see for yourself.

On the Chicago Scene. Carnation tried making breakfast seem cool to teenagers in a rocking radio commercial. Powdered milk and breakfast squares. On WCFL with DJ Barney Pip in October, 1967. This aired around 10 PM (CT). Pip was sort of a teen idol among Chicagoans. By 1970, the role was outgrown, and Pip was heard less, but still hosted live-music shows at clubs until leaving for New York (1971). Other talk involved the return of Dick Biondi (Halloween show) after several month's absence (quit WLS).

I was looking for the 1960s version. We were all 'space' crazy in the 1960s with NASA and I recall a Carnation Instant Breakfast that was marketed to kids who wanted to be astronauts. They were kind of the consistency of Play-Dough, and were extruded logs about 1/2 inch in diameter and each one came in a paper sleeve that was lined with a type of foil (I guess so space travel would not spoil them). The box had about a dozen bars. I recall they were only Chocolate, but maybe mom only bought the chocolate ones. I remember thinking they were really good, and the astronauts didn't have it too bad if they were eating these for breakfast every morning.
