Description
Chocolate bars with a chocolate coating on them. I think they replaced the Carnation Breakfast Squares (oh my favorite!) The Squares were dry as heck but the frosting layers inside the bar and the frosting/coating on top more than made up for it. But these Breakfast Bars were good, but discontinued. So sad! :(

If carnation brought these back, I would freak out. I crave these dry little bars. I was at my Grandmothers house digging thru her pantry and actually found one. I was so tempted to eat it but I didn't. Come on Carnation you would make millions sell the damn things again

These were my favorite. Of course back in those days I did not eat much of anything, so I practically lived on them. Please Carnation....bring them back!!!
Jeremy - April 27, 2008 - Report this comment
These were filling! I remember only being able to eat half of one as a little kid. Not that great tasting; kinda salty or something. But I still loved 'em! They made them chewy, like a granola bar, in the 80's and then discontinued them.
Carrie - July 10, 2008 - Report this comment
I came across some after they had been discontinued in a small country store in rural Tennesee. I bought them all and savored everyone. I did find a recipe on line but haven't tried it yet.

I used to live on these things when I was in high school! I would take a knife and scrape the frosting off and eat it first. I loved that frosting! I would also dip the bars in Hot Chocolate. They were AMAZING that way!

I recently found a very similar product at Target. They're called Market Pantry Nutrition Bars. They are almost the exact same thing as the classic Breakfast Bars. I wonder if they bought the recipe from Carnation. I clearly remember those chalky Brakfast Squares too, but I thought it was a different brand than Carnation. Does anyone remember the brand name?

Mmmmm...lord, I miss these things! As I recall, I used to eat them while watching cartoons after school. In recent years, I've perused the breakfast aisle, hoping they were still around, thinking I just couldn't find them because the box looked different.
Chris - August 21, 2009 - Report this comment
I have craved the Carnation breakfast bars ever since they were discontinued. I found something that tastes almost exactly like them, though: The chocolate chip ranger bars that come in military MREs. Tastes just like the old breakfast bars!
Tina - August 23, 2009 - Report this comment
Yes, I grew up on these bars too. I miss them terribly and also wander the cereal isle to this day expecting them to come back into production and wind up back on the shelf as if someone just forgot to tell me they were for sale again. I'd by the whole lot of them... Come on carnation!!!!! What's it gonna take. Just make them again!!!!!!!!!!!

I loved these things & would eat them in layers to savor the flavor. I think I ate them in the late 70's early 80's until one time I was biting off a layer & looked down to find that there were magets in them. I don't know if it was just a bad batch or what, but I never ate them again. I still crave them & would try them if they brought them back.

I LOVED them bars! Like a couple people said.. I also find myself walking down the isles in the market hoping I'll see some. They need to bring them back! They'd make a lot of money. I can taste them now. As a kid I was hooked on the cholcoate and vanilla flavors.

My friend's dad was a Vietnam vet he would hide boxes of Breakfast Squares in his closet for emergency rations. We always found them and snacked on them. I still crave those things-especially chocolate and cinammon flavors.

I ate a ton of these and can still taste them. They weren't that great in retrosepct, taste-wise, like someone else said, they were dry and salty... yet they were somehow addicting.. I think at the time they just seemed decadent.

Yep, agree with you all. That was the only breakfast bar/nutrition/granola bar that I would eat. On occasion, I will try another brand only to find them gross. And yes, I, too, scan the aisles to see if they have come back yet.

I am 42 years old and still think about the chocolate chip Carnation Breakfast Bars! Growing up in the 70's my mom would buy a box and I would have to share them with my two sisters...I could never get enough. Of course I've looked over the years, but nothing is ever the same.

I have been looking for these for years now. I saw where there is a petition above but also noticed that you have to leave a donation to sign it. :-( Anyway, I think I am going to go send General Mills a request to bring them back. If enough people do that, perhaps they will consider it

Count my wife and I in! By far the best quick breakfast/snack food ever. The newer replacements are terrible. Tastes like chemicals, and the whole "chewy" thing just has to go. Please bring them back! We will make it worth your while!

these bars were the best. They were the only breakfast I would eat, and even now without the bars I no longer eat breakfast. Please bring them back!!!

The chocolate chip Breakfast Bars got me through high school. That was the only breakfast I would eat that early in the morning. They had a crunchy texture, like ground peanuts. If I remember right, just before they disappeared, they changed them and made them chewy like all the other chewy bars they have now. There is just nothing to compare the original to.

Wow, I can't believe so many people commented on these bars. I was googling them in hopes that I would find some somewhere, somehow. I too loved them so much that I can still taste them when I think about them. I don't think I have ever enjoyed anything as much as the Carnation Breakfast bars. My mother would buy the chocolate chip ones when I was a child and I would literally eat the entire box everytime we had some. I would make 30 mile trips to the grocery store just for these bars. I was devastated when they stopped making them and always wonder why. Sitting here now, 20 years later, I don't know what made me think of them but I did and I can taste them right now. Please bring them back, and don't change a thing. Make them exactly the way they used to be. Chocalte chip Carnation Breakfast Bars. better than sex...better than anything. thanks!

Oh, I almost forgot. if you want to make them yourself, here is the recipe. I tried it and they are almost identical. thanks. 1 Cup Spanish Peanuts (Peeled and Crushed to a near powder) 1 Cup Rolled Toasted Oats (I had to use Granola for lack of toasted oats) 1 Cup Rice crispies ½ Cup Miniature chocolate chips 1/3 Cup Light Karo Syrup. 24 - 36 Oz. Milk Chocolate Combine all dry ingredients and mix thoroughly. Add Karo Syrup (though it is possible to pack the ingredients without this) Line a small pan with wax paper and PACK the mixture FIRMLY into pan. Melt 12 oz of the chocolate and spread over top of mixture and refrigerate till firm (at least one hour) HenWri3@aol.com

We grew up on Carnation Instant Breakfast Bars. Heh, sometimes one before school and sometimes one after. Sometime a box for dinner even. I know it sounds like a joke, but those I-B-Bars saved my life by keeping me from a death more horrible than being burned alive; its called "my cooking.". Which is something I wouldn't wish on the Taliban much less myself. I would say bring them back but only two possibilities could result, they won't or they will but change them in some way.... well, I would like to thank the Carnation Corporation because even though many people in this country will never experience the pleasure, Carnation made it possible for me......

We took these hiking all the time. I wasn't surprised to eat some MRE bars and find out that they were similar. There was a lot of nutrition packed into those things. I actually called the company to complain when we found out they were being discontinued.

I absolutely LOVED these breakfast bars! My favorite was the chocolate chip. I ate them for breakfast, lunch, as a snack. I have never found another breakfast bar since to take it's place. If they brought them back, even for a short period, I would surely stock up on them. Obviously, I was not the only one who found these breakfast bars to be extra special. I hope Carnation listens to their fans.

Ounce for Ounce, these Carnation breakfast bars would be worth their weight in gold. It's been more than 35 years and I have been chasing that taste (especially the chocolate chip) for years in bars. Every bar I tasted since then does not even come close to those bars. I even remember the packaging. Man, what a major void in my life!

I have missed these bars! I had one everyday for breakfast and a an after school snack also. My favorite was the peanut butter but I never had a bad flavor. Now is the time to bring them back - I have no doubt they will be a hot seller now!!!!!!!

My friend Jill had these and she would break a little off for me. They were definitely in yellow paper, definitely Carnation breakfast bars. The kind I crave are the original 1977 salty peanut-based bars. In the 80's they changed them to granola to save money because they were primarily peanuts. They were amazing. Yes, chalky. I have tried to recreate them. sea-salt, tiny chocolate chips, maybe a hint of vanilla. I just can't get it quite right. I laughed reading one person's comment about it reminding them of Kodak paper. Truth! I wrote Carnation about 6 years ago asking for a return of the original. They were awesome. I got the same form-response. I don't want a coupon. I want people to stop making crappy oatmeal bars for breakfast. I'd love something easy my kids could grab that was actually good for them.

The ones from the 70's/80's, were the BEST EVER-.I don't care what they were made of or if they were healthy or NOT!!! My mom bought them by the hundreds of boxes. The last one I saw was in a PRI(??) bag for the Army meals. And, I lingered over it taking as long as I could to eat it because I missed them so much & they were so good & filling & perfect. Nothing else compares to them AT ALL---EVER!! Please bring them back-not even a "close" one will do- And, to this day everytime I see a new bar on the shelf in a health food store or elsewhere-they never measure up to the ORIGINAL FORMULATION Carnation Breakfast bar

OK, so the Carnation Breakfast Bars and the Slender Diet Bars were the exact same things in different wrappers and packages. Back then, diet bars and dieting drinks like sego, figurines and slender were popular. The slender bars were delicious! the construction of these bars was sort of dried little balls stuck together and encased in chocolate.
