Description
Chewy middle - nougat? Covered in chocolate. I don't know what made it different from other, similar bars, but it sure was good!

This was my all time favorite candy growing up in the late 60's and 70's. I recently found my second favorite (Long Boy Coconut Candy) but sure wish the Butternut was still on the market.
Frances - January 15, 2008 - Report this comment
Top of my list of favorites in 1950's and early 1960's Texas, nickel a bar. They had a very dense center of nougat, not at all fluffy, and the caramel had a slight "burn" as it melted on ones' tongue and palate.

Television commercials for this had an elephant and maybe a cow singing a male & female argument-duet: "It's nuttery, buttery, *nuttery!*, *buttery!*, Butternut!" I can still sing it myself. LOL

Oh my fond and wonderful memories I have of enjoying a Butter Nut Candy Bar. I was in elementry school 1953 to 1959 and oh how I remember going to the neighbor store and savoring every bite of this candy bar. I love candy bars, but this was by far my all time favorite. I would give anything to be able to savor the taste of this great candy bar again and again and again. There was something very special about this candy bar. Made by Hollywood Candy Company, they only make Zero and Pay Day anymore. :(

Butternut candy bar was great. In the early 60's was only 5 cents and decent sized-great memories of having 15 cents-buying a coke and butternut at neighborhood store-lots and lots of fond memories-hope all of you have fond one's too

When I was in school at Texas A&M 1958, I bought Butternut Candy Bars from the candy machine in the dorm. I used to hound the guy that serviced the candy machine and accused him shorting us on the Butternut ,because we always seemed to run out of them within one day

Butternut was my favorite candy bar. I really really miss it. You would think one of these candy companies would buy the recipe and remake some of these discontinued but much loved items. The three things I want back from the seventies(besides my youth lol) are the Butternut bar, Sour Bites and Wink (Wink was a sourish soda made by Canada Dry)

Yep, I'm gonna throw in a "me too" on this one. My wife and I were discussing the Butternut yesterday on our way to Kennesaw Mt. for a hike. It was my fav back in the '60s for sure. Like a Snicker, but better. IIRC, you could still get them at a very few places even in the '90s.

BUTTERNUT candy bars were the best ever made! Hollywood used to make these as well as PayDays, MilkShakes and Zero bars. PayDay and Zero bars are still made by the Hershey candy co. I encourage everyone to email the Hershey candy co and ask them to please bring back the BUTTERNUT...even if only for a short time. I've emailed them twice and they do respond. Maybe if they get a lot of emails they will consider bringing this amazing candy bar back. they must own the rights to it and have the recipe because they never indicated they didn't in their reply to me. while we are talking about discontinued candy bars...anyone remember the Caravelle bar made by Peter Paul? they were delicious too!
Jay - August 24, 2009 - Report this comment
Oh yeah, I remember the Caravelle. It was probably my second-favorite bar. Truth is, I don't think I ever grew up...still like candy and kid stuff. My mom didn't allow much of it when I was coming up.

I am pleasantly surprised to read all of your comments. Yesterday I was just talking about Butternut candy bars. It was my favorite. I have gone in stores that sell "yesterday's" candy but I've never seen the Butternut candy bar. I would love to taste one at least once more. A few months ago I had a Clark bar and Bit O' Honey. They were a treat.
Jay H - September 11, 2009 - Report this comment
This would be the perfect candy bar for Cracker Barrel to reincarnate. They already sell Clove gum, Zotz, and other old time candy. Having the muscle of a national chain would probably be a big help in getting whoever owns the rights to reissue the Butternut.

I can't remember a time during the sixties that I ever went to the movies without buying a butternut candy bar. That bar was the best tasting candy that you ever wanted to put in your mouth. Please consider a remake. I can't imagine why anyone would ever want to stop making something so wonderful.

My mother loved Butter-Nut, so naturally I wanted some, too. She would share, of course, but only a small amount. When I got old enough to go to the corner store, I would often pick a Butter-Nut candy bar of my very own, when I didn't go for a 3 MUSKETEERS instead (much BIGGER!).

In my early teens, in the mid 60's, I would eat a Butter nut bar and a bag of potato chips after a half day of mowing lawns. The sweet, nut and buttery taste of the bar combined with the salty taste of the chips was incredible !!

There was a little store across the street from where we used to go to church. We would save our money during the week and every Sunday, after church, we would go to that little store and buy Butternut candy bars. They were so good and honestly, I haven't found another candy bar that can beat the taste of the Butternut bar; not even the Snickers bar. Snickers are too sweet. The Butternut bar was just right.

I am in agreeance with everyone else here too. I miss the good old fashioned candies from years gone by. The candy that they make today just don't have the kick and flavor like the butternut candy bar. The candy bars of today are too little and cost too much. I wish as well that one of the big candy companies would reconsider and go back into time and make these candy bars again. Maybe I will drop them a line and ask them.

Born in 1959, butternut candy bar was my favorite candy and although I did not have a lot of money, somehow I managed to get my hands on a butternut candy bar. As a substitute, I buy a snicker bar which uses a darker chocolate then butternut and it suffices the taste since butternut is no longer in production. I often wonder why the people at butternut stopped production since the candy obvious had a positive impact on a lot of people.

Okay, folks - correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Snickers bar is made by Mars, the M&M company. Why would that keep Hershey's from producing Butternut? I think they cut into Mars' profit and marketshare by giving Snickers some competition. To me their is no competition. Butternut was the best candy I EVER ate!

Another visit to this site and glad to see people still commenting. :) I found a candybar that is very close to the taste of the Butternut. It's called Pearson Nut Goodie (carmel). At least I think it tastes very close. Sassy, you are correct...Snickers is made by Mars so there is no reason the Hershey co. could not bring back the Butternut. Please everyone, keep contacting Hersheys!

Butternut candy bars were the best candy bars ever made. My mother use to sell candy as a fund raiser for her church. Butternut was my ABSOLUTE favorite. I long for that taste still to this day. I have not had one since the early 70's. PLEASE BRING THEM BACK with the ORIGINAL RECIPE> PLEASE!!!! Who do I need to contact? Put ANY price you want on them. Just PLEASE BRING BACK BUTTERNUT CANDY BARS!!! The world is not the same without them. Just make 5 billion bars and STOP again if you so desire. I'd buy as many as ANY stores would sell me and I'd freeze them. I'd rather have butternut candy bars than bread. I MEAN IT! PLEASE BRING THEM BACK, PLEASE! That caramel, fresh peanuts, thin coat of milk chocolate, OMG! I NEED IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh how I miss Butter nut candy bars. They were the best. It was a tied between Butternut and Baby Ruth candy bars. Thankfully baby ruth candy bars are still around, but it would be so nice if one of the candy manufacturers would remake the butter nut bars again using the same recipe. DO not change anything in it!!

Non can compare...whoever made decision not to make them anymore made a serious mistake! So many years ago I bought my last butternut in a little country store (had not seen any in years), my mouth start watering when saw it could not wait to get in the car to tear into it. I opened it and it crumbled into so many tiny pieces...I think it was as old as I am. Please bring butternuts back...I will be 60 soon would love to have them to enjoy again...can I have the recipe at least!

I worked for Hollywood Candy thirty three years ago when they made the Butternut,Payday, Zero and Milkshake bars. Hollywood was owned by Consolidated Foods then, later bought by Leaf. We still made the Butternut until about twenty years ago when they closed the Centralia Illinois plant and sold out to Hershey. The Butternut was my favorite too but a Payday while it was still warm was pretty good too.

My boss brought up this candy bar today and I'd really like to make him a copycat of it. I'm getting that it was similar to a Snickers but the nougat was more firm and the caramel was more "burnt", is that about right? Any insight on their flavor and texture is much appreciated and if they turn out right, I will gladly share my recipe! Thank you!

Hersey does own the rights to this candy bar and the recipe is in their vaults. The old-tyme candy store owner in Memphis told my brother that he was told that Hershey is thinking about re-releasing this candy bar again because of the public outcry. Like all of you, it was my favorite candy bar and I have searched high and low as well for it. There are many different types of candy that was discontinued that I believe would still be hits today and I don't understand why they were discontinued. As concerned with profits as these companies are, you would think that they would try to meet consumer demand.

Just recently I have started buying the Snickers-Peanut Butter bar that has the two halves in the bar. This taste is the closest I have found to the original Butternut. It's not the same of course but it does remind me of the original Butternut. So if you want a sense of the taste of Butternut you should try one. But you'd better hurry before Snickers become extinct too. Just kidding.

I've longed for Butternut candy bars for years! I grew up eating them as a kid in the 60's & 70's. I've never found any candy bar I love as much as Butternut. I remember the jingle where the cow sang, "It's buttery...nuttery" and the elephant would reply, "nuttery...buttery" and they'd both say "Butternut." The closest taste to it would be a Snickers, but the chocolate was milkier & softer, the caramel was very buttery in flavor--almost like a butterscotch, with a dense nougat-like center & peanuts. I can taste it now. I always look for it in Cracker Barrel stores, like today. That made me Google the bars to see if they are available anywhere & that led me to this thread. I will join in emailing and commenting on Hersheys Facebook page in hopes that will help bring it back. Good to see I'm not the only one who loves that candy bar!

Butternut was made by the Hollywood Co, which was bought out by several companies ending up w/Hershey. I think what made it so great was the quality ingredients (according to Wikipedia) Hollywood insisted on using. Maybe we can get everyone to bombard Hershey til they do at least a once a year production, so we can all get our fix (assuming the original recipe is still around).

We very much appreciate you taking the time to complete Hershey’s Idea Submission Form and for suggesting we bring back Hollywood candy bars. We truly value your input. Although there are many factors that impact our ability to relaunch a pre-existing product, if we receive enough interest from consumers, there is always the possibility that Hollywood candy bars could be brought back. We routinely compile product relaunch requests for our Marketing managers and will make sure your submission is added in our next report. Thanks again, Sharon, for letting us know what your taste buds have been missing! Have a sweet day, Maru Consumer Representative

From the daytime TV vault, Butternut candy bar is shown as a "Bonus Item" during "Supermarket Sweep" on ABC (3/23/67). For the most part, married couples shared a cart in competition with the other to find the items hidden within the aisles of a select grocer from around the country. Purex laundry soap and Alka Seltzer among sponsors. Network promos for "Dark Shadows" (early Barnabas episode) and "Where the Action Is" with Dick Clark.

From the daytime TV vault, Butternut candy bar is shown in the Check-Out pricing game during "Price Is Right" on CBS (10/3/72). Retail price was 15 cents. This was the shorter, half hour version with three pricing games, then the Showcase. The two highest winning contestants bid on showcases. The great original with Bob Barker and announcer Johnny Olsen. The show expanded to an hour in 1977. Olsen served as announcer until his death in 1988. For the life of me, today's Covid version of "Price Is Right" is unwatchable. Depressing, no fun. CBS should air Barker reruns instead. They were more fun and upbeat.
