Description
Does anyone remember how huge these were in the 70's? They have since changed to the oblong sandwich. If I recall, this sandwich bun was even bigger than the whopper bun!

Yes, I remember them well. They were called "Whalers". BK also used to have a ham sandwich called the "Yumbo" (I think that's what it was called?)

I loved the Yumbo - it rocked. Too bad they haven't brought it back.

The Whaler's were the best fish sandwich out there. BK had to change the name due to some Environmentalists not liking the name Whaler. The current fish sandwich at BK is close but not quite the same

I just visited Back to have a fish sanddwich and discovered its been shrunk in half. They even changed the name to Alaska fish sandwich. This sandwich is horrible. Its basically a batter sandwich. I felt like returning it and going somewhere else. There chesse burgers also keep shrinking. They are approaching the size of a dollar coin. BK sux.

Burger King introduced the Whaler in 1975, competing with McDonald's Filet-O-Fish. The fish sandwiches at the King underwent several name changes, along with size and shape. The Whaler was about 65 cents, while Filet-O-Fish was about 40 cents. Also, from the Saturday morning cartoon vault: A TV commercial which introduced the current logo (two hands holding a Whopper to form logo). Two men order lunch. When they get the food, one complains that he can't hold a Whopper...reason being: One guy's a detective, handcuffed to the other. The guy under arrest did the complaining. This aired on the "Pink Panther" cartoon show (10/4/69, NBC). Slogan: It Takes Two Hands to Hold a Whopper! The logo replaced that of the king sitting on a Whopper, holding a soft-drink cup, from 1957, when BK was founded in the Miami area.

When the Burger King opened in 1974 in Dundalk MD. We would go there after class and get the Whopper sandwich you would have to cut it in half and share it with someone else. That was great for the student budget. The sandwich was very hot when you got back to school it was still hot. The taste was great. Now the sandwich is a quarter of the and it is always cold by the time you eat it. The chicken Sandwich used to be so big that it would hang off the bun. Now it is so small that you cannot even see it. There is more dough on the chicken then meat. The fish sandwich tasted like fresh fish. Not watered down meat. The cost of the old burgers was cheaper and you got great food. Now you send double the amount and heat less food. A little tip get your soda without ice because the soda must be cold so that the carbonation work. If you get a soda with ice they fill the cup half full of ice,so that when you start drinking it and get to the middle of the drink you are drinking watered down brown water.

A couple years before the Whaler, but.. From the Saturday morning cartoon vault, a TV spot with the animated Burger King and his inept wizard. The king orders, "Make me a strawberry shake!" Wizard turns king into one, then into an order of fries, before restoring him to normal. Offer for a plush Burger King toy, two dollars with minimum food purchase. This aired on "The Osmonds" cartoon over ABC (11/11/72). The show was animated in England (similar to the "Beatle" cartoons) by Videocraft. Episode has the Osmond brothers returning to Utah, where Donny hopes to reconcile with a girlfriend who dumped him for another guy. Donny won her back in a skiing contest, though little Jimmy nearly wrecked things. The Osmonds voiced their cartoon figures. Other talent included Paul Frees and Iris Rainier (female characters). Other commercials were for Post Super Orange Crisp, Mattel Vroom motorbikes, Shasta soda and Flintstones vitamins. Network promo for "Saturday Superstar Movie."

From the Saturday morning cartoon vault, another quick adventure with the King and Duke of Doubt. Duke sticks his long nose in a shake. Specialty (sub) sandwiches like the fish mentioned, along with "Jet Age" kid meals, with a balsa wood glider included with burger, fries and drink. This aired on "Alvin" over NBC (3/8/79). As a mid-season filler, NBC added reruns of the 1961 "Alvin" cartoon show for several months. Condensed, but virtually unedited. The Chipmunk song segments and "Clyde Crash Cup" (nutty inventor) cartoons also shown. "Star Wars" toys and Cap'n Crunch among other commercials on the show.

From the Saturday morning cartoon vault, an early TV spot with the live-action Burger King doing his magic act. A blow pipe and ball was a kid giveaway. King made burgers, shakes and fries appear from thin air (what? No Whaler?). This aired on "Kids From CAPER" over NBC (6/10/77). A live-action series, "Kids From CAPER" was a belated "Man From UNCLE" parody featuring four late-teen boys and their police sergeant alliance contact. The 13 episode titles spoofed movies (Invasion of the Frankfurter Snatchers"). Originally on the fall 1976 Saturday lineup, "CAPER" was trounced in ratings by "Krofft Supershow" on ABC. Thus, "CAPER" was yanked off air in November, not returning until summer reruns, then cancellation. No notable star names were on the show.

From the prime time TV vault, a musical commercial announcing BK's Whopper Game, with scratch-off cards. No cash prizes involved, only food prizes. The best you'd get was a Whopper Meal ($2.50 value back then). This aired on "Welcome Back, Kotter" over ABC (11/25/78). Episode involved Arnold Horshack's refusal to dissect a live frog in biology class. The former Chiffon "Mother Nature," Dena Dietricht, played the biology teacher for several episodes during Gabe Kaplan's extended absence (over salary and the show's future) from the show.

This story is actually about BK French fries. From the prime time TV vault, a musical commercial I'll call "French Frying Legion," in which the Foreign Legion is parodied. A special team of BK French fry experts shown, sprinkled with a little patriotism ("Serving Our Country...the Best French Fries"). This aired during "Lotsa Luck" on NBC (9/28/73). "Lotsa Luck" stereotyped a struggling Brooklyn family headed by Dom DeLuise as Stanley, a New York transit worker. Among Stanley's brood, a bossy mother, lazy sister Olive (Beverly Sanders), and lazier brother-in-law. Despite having the popular "Sanford & Son" as lead-in, "Lotsa Luck" had abysmal ratings for Friday night, cancelled after one season. Reruns are on Antenna TV Saturdays at 11:30 PM (CT).
