It resembled a moon pie. They came in chocolate and vanilla. I would love to find out if they are still available for purchase.

My brother's favorite snack at recess in our Texas elementary school in the 1950's was the Lance Big Town Cake. It consisted of 2 square slabs of gingerbread cake with marshmallow sandwiched in between, with scalloped edges which was then dipped in either a pink glaze, a chocolate glaze or a creamy beige glaze all of which seemed to taste the same. He favored the dark pink one if it was available from the "cafeteria lady". They cost a nickel and while I really liked them, he loved and craved them. Would give almost anything to be able to find a supply for him.

I GREW UP IN NC WHERE AS A CHILD WE WOULD WALK TO THE NEAREST COUNTRY STORE 6 MILES. WALKING WITHOUT SHOES OR THE HOT SUN DID NOT MATTER. BECAUSE AT THE END I COULD WALK BACK EATING MY FAVORITE A LANCE BIG TOWN CAKE. SO LANCE WHY NOT DO A PROMOTION FOR A FEW MONTHS SUPPLY US WITH OUR FAVORITE CAKE ONE MORE TIME.

In the '50s when my Dad would come home from driving a coal truck he would bring my brother and I, along with the two neighbor kids a Lance Big Town Cake home. We would all set on the front steps and eat them together.

Whenever my brother and I would walk as kids to my aunt's house, we were always allowed to have big town cake after supper. You brought back one of my best and most nostalgic childhood memories.

I grew up in Charlotte, home of Lance. I have emailed 3 times in the past 4 yrs. asking about possibly bringing the B.T. cake back. Once I was told they got rid of the chocolate dipping equipment.Later, I wrote suggesting they sell the recipe to Lil Debbie cakes, saying surely they had the equipment.Lance responded that they were thinking of bringing it back so didn't go for that idea. Well that was about 3yrs.ago, nothing happened.I wrote last week. This time they didn't even give me the courtesy of a reply.I've even told them if they would make them I would buy them and give them out to people free to advertise and boost sales. This was such a great snack cake, far superior to Moon Pie, better than any product Lance makes now. Maybe everyone should email them. WE WANT BIG TOWN CAKES!!!!!
Reba - November 22, 2009 - Report this comment
The Lance Moon Pies was the best. When you needed a sweet bite of something or chocolate that was what I went to get. I wish they would come back. Maybe we need to get everyone one our email address and that we send Christmas cards to write to the Lance Corp. and tell the how me would like them to bring them back. If we tell all our friends how good they was maybe with all of us working together we can get it done.

I too had a weakness for the Lance Big Town Cakes. They were always my favorite. Along with an RC Cola...could not be beaten. Would like for Lance to start producing again. It beats a moon pie all to pieces.
Sharon T. - January 31, 2010 - Report this comment
Yes Lance Big Towns were the best. Much much better than Moon Pies or Scooter Pies. My brother and I bought one everyday for elementary school lunch at five cents each. As an adult I continued to buy them until I could no longer find them.

OMGGGG i miss those things so much beats the moon pie to bits!! plzzzzzzz Lance make them again!
Mary B. - September 08, 2010 - Report this comment
I agree with all of the above. I have been hakering for the Lance Big Town Cake for a long time and wondered why they were no longer for sale. I would buy them at a pharmacy which carried Lance products or in the vending machines. I always bought at least 5 or more because they always ran out. I guess everyone thought like me-get as many as you can. Moon Pies Scooter Pies or all the other imitators can never compare to the Big Town. It is too bad that Lance did not know a gold mine when they saw one. I can think of at least most of their products they could have discontinued. Hopefully, they sold the recipe to another company. Could be overseas. Check with your family and friends who are overseas and see if they have it. Big Town or nothing!!!!!

I remember Big Town's were my absolute fav!!! My dad use to take me to the store when I was a little girl and get them for me. I hated moon pies (still do). They died out after the 80's Lance should do a limited addition snack release with all the retro stuff

Why do they discontinue something that was just amazing?? No road trip was complete without finding them snd buying all they had!!

I found this site while looking to see if Big Towns were still around. Sometimes I dream about them at night and I'm a 50 yr old executive. This sounds like an entrepreneurial opportunity. It had a unique flavor that stays with you. It's cool to see so many folks feel EXACTLY the way I do. I would love for the next generation to experience them!

I have been looking for the Lance moon pies for the last 3 years. Thought for sure I would find them again back here in TN like I did the Goo Goo candy bar and Kripy Kreme donunts( though now you can find the donuts outside the south). I find the Lance assortment of cookies everywhere and people say they are the best. But I say have you had the Lance moon pie and they say what?? They talk about moonpies but I tell them if you think you like that moonpie that is everywhere now you don't nothing unless you have had the Lance moonpie... oh yeah your little pecan pies are still the greatest too! But Please make the Lance Moon Pie so I can let everybody taste what the real deal moonpie is!!??

I grew up in Hickory NC. We had a little neighborhood store that use to sale ALL of Lance snack products. My abosolute favorites where those round devils food cakes with vanilla cream frosting in between two layers and the raisin cake with the frosting in between two layers. I used to get get a butter knife and slice the cakes and play with my tea set pretending to "have tea"...lol Oh..the memories. My all time favorite cake was the sweet potato cake that they made. OOOOH I can just taste that thing right now! It wasn't a whole round cake, but it was in the shape of half that. So moist and spicey. Just delicous. The store couldn't keep enough of those things! Lance really to do a THROW BACK TO RETRO SNACKS!!! If only once a year forever! The best snacks ever!

I want to chime in as well. I grew up in Richmond Va in the 70's and there was nothing like a Big Town at the end of the day. The moon pies of today just don't approach the flavour. It's hard to describe but I'm so glad to see I'm not alone. I cannot eat a moon pie since it always seems lacking.

Big Town pies were very fresh and the coating of Chocolate was a milk chocolate that was not overly sweet but just right. The graham cracker crust made it the perfect snack. There was a bootleg version that I made myself get accustomed to, but it still does not meet Big Towns excellence. I think Lance should bring them back one more time, with a chance for me to stock up!

I also love the Big Town Cake. As a teenager in the mid 70's, I would buy one almost everyday. I wish Lance would consider bringing back one of their best products. The Town pie is and was far better than a moon pie.

I wrote a comment in 2010, and still no Lance Big Town cake. I talked to a Lance delivery person and he was wondering the same thing. The "moon pies" are no where near as good. Too sweet or something. That includes Little Debbie and those other companies. If Lance is not going to make them anymore, at least put the recipe on line or sell it to another company who will make them for us. I am going to boycott Lance until they bring back the Big Town.

i moved a man about 8 years ago that worked as a supervisor at lance,i asked him why they stopped making the big town moonpie? "THE KING DADDY DOG OF MOONPIES" and he told me that the sales were down so they discontinued making them. he also told me they were made from all the left over dough from other things that they made. i told him if thats what made them so good i didnt care what leftover dough, batter, was used. idk y they would discontinue making them because everybody i knew bought them by the box so how could sales be down. it was the best moonpie ever.

I worked for Lance for 30 years We sold Bigtown Cakes in Choclate. Vanilla and banana flavors, There was a strawberry flavor that was discontinued in 1979. We also had a 2pack Choclate For Vending machines.

I wrote this site nin 2009 telling how I had contacted Lance several times about Big Town Cakes. At that time they told me they were considering bringing it back, but they no longer had the dipping equipment. Surely a company like Lance has the money to buy one machine. I think if they did that they would find out sales for the cakes would soon pay back the cost. It is obvious there is still strong following out there. I see comments as recent as 2015. This was topic of conversation at my family Christmas gathering this year. I think we need to bombard Lance with emails on this. They could make a fortune bringing it back.

Dominic - July 09, 2016 - Report this comment
Mike, The moon pies from Chattanooga baking company is a far cry from the Big Town. I know a lot of us of a certain age are nostalgic for the flavor since it was a constant component of our lunch boxes (ham and cheese on white bread, apple juice, chips and Big Town) back in the 70s, but the fact is it was a better snack. We are not hallucinating.

Bring back the Big Town cakes! Moon Pies have a slightly bitter taste. The Big Town had a much sweeter flavor. If Lance can't afford another "chocolate dipping machine", then they should sell the recipe to the Chatanooga bakery!

I would purchase the Lance Big Town Pie regularly if they were available. While the cookie part may have been graham, there was definitely a touch of ginger. I always thought they were gingerbread. Little Debbie should make an attempt. I think it would be a hit.

I have wrote in 2009 after many attempts to get Lance to start producing again. I believe the company became Lance/Snyder & is now owned by Campbell's. Hate it folks but I think we are out of luck. They don't seem interested in our pleas. Steve H I'm with you thinking the cake was more like gingerbread, too soft for graham cracker, more of a spice taste. I think everyone should contact Snyder or Campbell's. Look how many years we have been writing in to his site. This would be a huge seller again. For any peanut butter lovers out there, Little Debbie has a cake that soooo good.

I am 72 years old. About 50 years ago, when my brother-in-law and I started deer hunting together, we always stopped at this little country store for snacks. Without fail, I would get a Pepsi, a bag of Frito-Lays Cheese Puffs, and a Lance Big Town Pie. Lance quit making the Big Town sometimes in the 70's. My wife is 11 years younger than me and she does not remember them when I say I wish I had one. A few years back, I contacted Lance to see if they would ever make them again. I received an apologetic letter from their customer service folks. They said that after they quit making them for a few years and management changed that The Moon Pie company bought the recipe and destroyed it. "Kill the competition" if you will. I have resolved myself to the fact that I will never have another Big Town. Such a pity that something so good is not and will never be available again.

Being born in 1961, Like most other kids at that time, I knew and loved the Big Town Pie! Growing up on a farm, about once a month my Dad would take me along with him to the Mill to have feed mixed and made for the hogs and cattle on the farm. He would take raw materials to the mill to be mixed with other ingredients and placed in 100 lb bags. And on every trip, while things were mixing, my Dad would give me money to buy a 6 oz coke and a Big Town Pie. And if I try really hard, I can see myself sitting in the small heated room behind the silo. and I can taste that Coke and the Big Town Pie!! How I love going back!
