The favorite gum of all the kids in my neighborhood. I think it came in Cherry, Grape and Green Apple. The grape was my favorite and no matter what, it was shared among the gang with enough for everyone to tear off a nice sized piece. It had an intense flavor that lasted a long time..I can almost taste it right now : ) Just the thing when riding my lavendar chick bike with the white banana seat and chrome "sissy" bar. Saturdays in the 70's rocked!

I would have given a dozen Big Buddies for a lavender bike, mine was icky yellow with the white banana seat and ape hager handle bars. I remember the Big Buddys, green apple was my fav.. used to scrounge the sofa cushions for the .27 it cost for a foot of gum! Your right Saturdays sure did rock in those days!

I remember riding to the store on my sting ray bike with the chrome sissy bar and a purple sparkly banana seat to get a Big Buddy, always grape to match my seat, YUM! I used to scrounge around in my Dad's car around the seat to find money, I only needed 5 cents for my Big Buddy (late '60s early '70s), sometimes I'd score a quarter! I could chew the entire thing while watching Speed Racer, Gilligan's Island, I Dream of Jeanie, the Mod Squad, etc.. I'd chew that wad until my jaws ached...

i'm 40 now but i remember the 70's well. i had a yellow bike with floral banana seat. seems like we all road our bikes to get our big buddys. cherry was my favorite, and man did they blow some big bubbles, and of course you really haven't experienced it until you fell asleep with it and it got in your hair. my mom spent hours once trying to get that out of my hair lol.

I LOVED the green apple flavor, and every time I chewed it near my mom, she said it smelled like dirty feet. The long sticks made it easier to share with your friends

I kept trying to remember the name of the Big Buddy bar. It finally dawned on me that I have a Wacky Packs parody sticker of it. It's funny how one fond memory of the 70 's can link you to another one!

I loved these! My favorite was a flavor called Hawaiian, it was sort of pineapple/coconut flavor. I ad a teacher if you were caught chewing gum in her class made you stick it on your nose. No way could you deny not having with a whole Big Buddy in your mouth. One girl had been chewing a Green Apple one once and fashioned a long Witchie-Poo nose out of it and wore it all day. She was my idol! I grew up in D.C. in the 70's

I was a big fan of all flavors of the Big Buddy, I also had a teacher in 6th grade that would have me pick her up the green apple ones, on my walk home from school each day. I remember when the sold for .15$. Amazing...Need to find the recipe for this and return it to all stores. Kids today have no clue what they have missed out on!

Wow you all are taking me back. I remember my grandmother would give me some change to walk over to the shopping center ( It was safe to do that back then)and pick up my favorite flavor ( cherry) and I would put the whole thing in my mouth at once. I guess that why I have 3 crowns in my mouth as we speak

“D’ja have any gum”? Mark pulled the long thick rectangle of gum from his back pocket. The Big Buddy was folded to allow the 14” of contiguous gum to be carried. Peeling back some of the plasticized paper he slide out about 4”. Frank pushed up from the wall and took the proffered mass of gum to tear off his allotted portion. Shoving the length into his mouth he began masticating dramatically. “ah nothing like gum right after breakfast. I love this flavor too what is it”? “this is Hawaiian” Mark refolded the yellow and green stick to put it back in his pocket as a reflex action. He moved over to the open doorway and looked appraisingly inside. “is this where you do your science” “Yup I make experiments here. We keep getting science kits from the churches in the lower 48” “They give them all to you”? “well they are afraid the other kids would hurt themselves, they are too little to play with chemicals. I am the oldest so I get the stuff”. Frank walked into his store room “lab” and Mark followed, intrigued.

I discovered Big Buddy gum when my family moved to Long Island From Brooklyn in the mid-seventies. Green Apple, Watermelon, Cherry, Grape. I too rode my 5 speed Ross bike with banana seat and sissy bar to the candy store a 1/2 mile away with my brother and friends to buy our big buddy's and Now & Laters. Our Bungalow Bar ice cream man sold all that stuff too. Great old days when the world was a much safer place for kids.

I’m almost 54 years old. I was probably 6 when this took place. Kippy and me lived in a small town in upstate NY. The hillside was our neighborhood. Middle class for the most part. Almost every home had kids. I believe it was summertime and Kip lived just a couple houses down from me. We were close as kids. One day we decided to go to the bottom of the Terrace as the hillside is known. To the grocery store we knew as the Victory market. for whatever reason Kip and I grab both grabbed a small brown paper bag. Those days they had 2 sizes large paper bags which they still use today and a smaller size. cannot say I have seen those anymore. Anyways for some reason Kip and I thought it would be ok to fill those bags with candy from the racks. No adult stopped us so proceeded to fill the bags with an assortment of candy and we walked out of the store. First thing I grabbed was a grape Big Buddy and stuffed the whole thing in my mouth. Kip and I laughed and chuckled as we made are way home. My lips getting progressively more purple. We must have known we were stealing, and it was wrong because with both hid our loot. Sure, enough kippies mom saw his stash and questioned where he got it(lol). Not sure how much info he gave, but he did include me in the caper. Shortly thereafter his mom called mine informing her that kippy had full bag goodies and that I may be in possession of savory sweets. So my mom calmly asked and I calmly denied "who me no I don’t have any Candy" Mom then asked why do you have purple all over your lips. “ohhh I ate the big buddy, I thought to myself”. I knew I was caught. Was not shortly after that, I gave in. I told my mom the candy was in the closet under my baseball hats. Well both our Moms with Kip and I in tow went immediately to the Victory market to turn us in. The Manager begin to tell us we could go to jail and we began to cry and plead that we will never steal again. The Manger ultimately saw fit to let us go if we promised to never steal again. For a moment though I thought we were going to the big house. Once dad got home,I got a few lashing and then life moved on. I still laugh and remember walking up the hill with a whole Big Buddy in my mouth.
