Description
Taco Bell had a sloppy Joe kinda hamburger, but without the slop. It came on a regular hamburger bun, with their meat and seasoning and it actually tasted very good, but i guess not a big seller

Back in the 70's, Taco Bell had a wonderful tasting burger called, the Bell Burger. It was very similar to a sloppy joe, but the taste was so good! Why hasn't Taco Bell brought back the Bell Burger for a limited time? In this day and age, it would go over very well, especially for those of us who grew up eating it. This would be a great promotion for Taco Bell. I have had many people inquire about it and wondered why they never brought it back. Okay Taco Bell, bring back the Bell Burger!!!!!

Now this is one I never understood them stopping. Heck, when I was late teens, Taco Bell, in the old buildings with the bell in the tower.. was the cheapest and reasonably decent tasting fast food. The Bell Burger was awesome!

Bell Burgers were the only way I could get my parents to go to Taco Bell. When the burger ended, so did our visits. Fortunately, about that time, I was able to drive myself. I liked the burger, it is missed.

Bell Burger - 59th & Indian School Rd. Maryvale Phoenix, Arizona Yes I remember, the good old lunch of High School Days. These days when I mentioned eating them in the early 70's, peolpe think I'm crazy. It was the taco meat put on a bun. Have you seen the taco meat lately at Taco Bell and you really want them to throw that on a bun and sell it to you, now days the meat is more like a paste and not meat?

The Bell Burger was outstanding and I have tried to have Taco Bell bring them back. At the same time the Bell Burger was available, everything on the Taco Bell menu was 25 cents and if you bought a taco, you received a free bean burrito.

My first bell burger 1965. Hunnington Beach Ca.Pacific Coast Hwy.Across from the Hunnington beach pier. Walk up window with concrete patio tables and benches out front. A sufers easy meal great! 29cents each. Real meat like sloppy joe's but better. Menced onions and a red sauce optional.Pintos and cheese a lot better than todays. Sorry to say long gone. Not cost effective.

Bell Burgers Rock! And they still do! Buy a hard shell toca from Taco Bell, also get the MILD sauce from Taco Bell (the little packets will do just fine) Take a hamburger bun and place the sauce on the bun, microwave for about ten seconds and then add then place the contents of the hard shell taco onto the bun! Break up th taco shell for some nacho chips! There you go, the Bell Burger! I do this ALL the time!

I loved the Bell Burger, that later was changed to the Bell Beefer. I ate them all the time. Taco Bell dropped them shortly before they changed their slogan to "Think outside the bun" I don't think Taco Bell tastes the same as it did back in the '70's, the Enchirito isn't made the same. it used to be made with a corn tortilla instead of a flour tortilla and had black olives on top. Change is not always good.

I was graced by living next to Hawaiian Gardens, Calif. We would go there on a Friday night and get 5 tacos and a coke and get change back from a one dollar bill. Years later I stopped at a franchise in Long Beach that was using the old order slips that listed all the items at $.19. I mentioned, the prices I recalled were $.15 per taco, red or green burrito, frijoles and tostada. The employee said I must have been to the original Taco Bell stand. What bliss. When the bell burger came out, (later called the bell beefer), it was the best thing ever marketed by T.B. BRING THEM BACK!!!!!

The bell burger required a lot of meat thats why they stopped selling it!!

In the mid 60s, on the way home from HS, we'd stop at the TB just a 1/2 mile away from Lakewood HS, CA. Tacos were 19 cents (not 25 like someone above said) and the Bell Burgers were 25cents. I'd get 4 tacos and a coke for a buck and then go home and have dinner...not a problem when you're 17. :-)

It was called the ”Bell Beefer”. It was not called the bell burger. The bell burger sounds lame. I should know, I was there. Bell Beefers were designed for kids who were afraid of tacos, and were crying because they werent at McDonalds. The McDonalds in my town had a train right down the middle of the restaurant. This was back when things were great. Now fast food is pitched primarily at blacks, and Taco Bell has gone wholeheartedly for the mexican demographic. Snack foods, like Cheetos® for instance have abandoned the white market entirely, only to aim with laser like precision for the black demographic. There latest commercial shows a white man being slapped in the face, while a black man says, ” i'm cool with that.” This is why I leave the garbage foods to the people they're designed for.

Taco Bell had it going on in the 70's. BellBurgers were great; it meant we could take my weenie brother without him whining that there was nothing there for him to eat. Oh, and the Enchiritos back then! They made them with a soft CORN tortilla, and put a single black olive slice on top. Now, they stick it in a flour tortilla; and is an olive really too much to ask?!

I found this recipe for the Bell Burger. Haven't tried it yet but posting it in case anyone is interested. Link to recipe here (posted by Antilope): http://www.recipesecrets.net/forums/ask-cooking-questions/33446-taco-bell-burger-copycat-recipe.html Taco Bell "Bell Burger" & "Bell Beefer" from 1960's & 1980's From about the mid-1960's through the mid-1970's Taco Bell made a Sloppy Joe like sandwich called the "Bell Burger". It used the same flavored ground beef mixture as a crunchy taco, along with a sauce similar to Mild Border Sauce and shredded mild cheddar cheese. This was served on a hamburger bun that had been steamed slightly to soften and warm it. This is not the "Bell Beefer", which came a few years later from the mid-1970's through the mid -1990's. The regular "Bell Beefer" had seasoned loose meat, sauce, onions and lettuce on a bun; the "Bell Beefer Supreme" also had tomatoes and cheese. The "Bell Burger" was just seasoned loose meat, sauce and shredded cheese on a steamed bun. -To make a "Bell Burger" add loose meat, grated cheese and mild border sauce. -To make a "Bell Beefer" add loose meat, diced onions, shredded lettuce and mild border sauce. -To make a "Bell Beefer Supreme" add loose meat, diced onions, shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, grated cheese and mild border sauce. Beef Filling: 1 pound lean ground beef, uncooked 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 1 Tbsp mild chili powder 1 tsp table salt 1/2 tsp dried minced onion flakes 1/2 tsp paprika 1/4 tsp onion powder dash garlic powder 1/2 cup cold water 6 hamburger buns (steamed slightly to soften and warm them) 6 to 12 packets (or 1/3 to 2/3 cup) of Taco Bell Mild Border Sauce (recipe below) 3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese Combine in a mixing bowl raw ground beef, flour, chili powder, salt, minced onion flakes, paprika, onion powder and garlic powder. Mix thoroughly like you would mix a meatloaf. In a skillet on the stove top, add 1/2 cup of cold water and the seasoned ground meat mixture. Mix well. Cook over medium heat, mash and stir ground meat as it cooks, breaking it up. Cook until meat is no longer pink and slightly browned. The meat mixture should be loose, without any large pieces. Drain off any grease or liquid. Steam the burger buns slightly to warm and soften them. Build a "Bell Burger" like this: Spread a tablespoon of Mild Border Sauce on the bottom bun. Place several tablespoons of the meat mixture on the bottom bun like making a sloppy joe. Add 1 or 2 packets (or 2 Tbsp) of Taco Bell Mild Border Sauce evenly over the meat on bun. Sprinkle 1 or 2 Tbsp of shredded mild cheddar cheese over meat mixture on bun. Add the top bun. Repeat 5 more times. Serve warm. Makes 6 "Bell Burgers" -------- Taco Bell Mild Border Sauce 1/2 cup cold water 1 teaspoon cornstarch 3 oz tomato paste (half of a 6 oz can) 1 1/2 Tablespoons white vinegar 2 teaspoons chili powder 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper Dissolve cornstarch in cold water. Add to saucepan. Add rest of ingredients and stir well. Over medium heat bring to a boil, reduce heat to a simmer and cook 5-minutes. Turn off heat, cover pan and allow sauce to cool. Store in the fridge. Makes about 1 cup.

Ok I have no doubt people will call me a liar but I invented the bellburger in Davis Calif. in about 1967 the town got it's Taco bell and everyone was trying it out, I loved the flavor of the seasoned meat but being a typical fussy kid I did not like the crispy corn tortilla shell so I suggested to the owner of the new franchise that he try putting the meat on a hamburger bun he said he would try it out! Sure as heck a few days later I went by and he had already added them to his menu he spotted me right off and congratulated and thanked me for the Idea and said they were already selling fairly well, he then gave me 2 for free! For several months that was the only Taco Bell that had them but eventually the chain jumped on the idea and ran with it at all the stores!

There was a Taco Bell near our High School. Three or four times a week we would go and get Bell Burgers. I wish they would bring them back. They were so GOOD!!!!

I wish Taco Bell would "Think inside the Bun"!! Bring back the Bell burger. It was awesome. It was the only thing I could eat after I had my monthly orthodontist visit. The buns were fresh and soft and the meat so tender. So easy to chew. I looked forward to going there after every ortho visit.

I loved the bell burgers. Sometimes in the 70's I went in and they said the bell burger was gone. I said "Huh, I will never eat at a Taco Bell ever again, unless you bring them back." I am 64 and still waiting. They have been missing a big marketing opportunity.

Loved the Bell Burger (I'm old enough to remember the Bell Burger that preceded the Bell Beefer). The good news is that its so easy to make at home. Ground beef and taco seasoning put on a bun instead of in a shell, topped off with chopped onion, shredded lettuce and shredded cheddar. Topped off of course with Taco Bell hot sauce. Really takes me back.

Dang, I loved the Bun Taco or Bell Burger - and someone mentioned the Enchrito YES! I remember the olives and did not know it used to be made with a corn tortilla / and the Olives was the cherry on top. I wish they would bring back both! Along with Hydrox Cookies / those were my FAV above Oreo's by a mile!

They actually still had them at a few places until the maybe mid '90's. They weren't on the menu you had to ask. There was one in San Fernando, CA, one in Winslow, AZ, and one in the desert on the way to Mammoth mountain. I was a serious Taco Bell fan. Who knows it doesn't hurt to ask but I think they are gone now:(

The Bell Burger was simple but good. I think the flavor of the meat might have been a bit different back then. (late 60s early 70s) Then forward to later when they added other things like the Chalupas, they had one that I think was called a Santa Fe Chicken Chalupa. I sure miss that too. It was really good.

Everything was a quarter, even the drinks. My cheapo boyfriend could buy all the dinner for us both for $2.00. I loved the tacos. They just had one sauce. You had to walk up and walk away from the window with food. Much better flavor that it all has at Taco Bell, today.

I remember eating the bell burgers. It was in the late 60’s and early 70’s. What I remember is the bell burger was ground beef on a bun, topped with lettuce and cheese and onions. My Dad would always tell them to hold the onions. It wouldn’t taste the same now since hamburger meat there just isn’t the same as it was back then.

I loved the bell burger too. I think they don’t know how to take back when they started the commercial of “Think outside the bun”.
