I remember smocks. They buttoned at the top of the back kind of like a bikini top, but the smocky part was often open down the back. I was twelve, and my mother made me some, and I was lookin' goood!

This was one of our 7th grade sewing projects after we completed our apron and our A-line skirt. It was hard to make. Mine buttoned down the front, and the yoke with light gathers above the breast so the top floated away from the stomach. Good for a chubby girl to hide her tummy or a pregnant tummy too! Otherwise, they made everyone LOOK fat or pregnant regardless. I never wore mine. Often the yokes would be cut of a contrasting fabric but mine was all red bandana print. Yuck.

I loved these tops. I wish I could still fit into my patterns from this time period. Smocked tops for days you didn't want anything close to your skin, knits for the days you wanted to show off your figure.

I remember an magazine ad for a diet suppliment where the girl talked about how big she was prior to using the product. It showed a "before" picture of her with her supposed comment of, "It took alot of pinto beans to fill up this smock top".
