O.K. So the sizzler struck my intrest when a woman I work with was telling a story about them. I felt the need to see what they look liked and WOW! So were they really worn just like that no shorts or pants???

I might have been mistaken about the date, perhaps they came to the florida area at a later date. can someone remember if they were mainly short or long sleeved? were they mainly worn by much younger girls(13-15) years old or did high school and older also wear them? answer to stacy-a sizzle dress was known for having similar "panties" as the dress material.

Sizzler's came out in 71,72. Not real sure about the year. But I remember I was 15, And wore them alot. Bought one with my babysitting money ,every week.I never remember seeing a long sleeve one.And I do remember an 18 year old neighbor borrowing one of mine to wear out! So yeah, older girls wore them too.
mike - December 16, 2008 - Report this comment
Thanks to Theresa for your comments. Now,a question,Iseem to recall those outfits being called "bikini dresses" - was sizzler a more common name? Also what were the most popular fabrics used,I remember a nylon material?
Donna - May 30, 2009 - Report this comment
I'm so happy to have found this site. I've been trying to remember what these dresses were called, and it was "sizzler." I had a white one with little flowers all over it. Loved it! I think they were mostly made from cotton knits, and many of them also has tiny holes on them similar to an eyelet pattern. I was either a sophomore or junior in high school when I had mine. They weren't necessarily as short as some have said, though. Mine was down to my fingertips.
dee dee - June 10, 2009 - Report this comment
I remember wearing these, and we called them "sizzler suits" I was in 4th, 5th grade, and remember the teenagers wearing them. They were outlawed at school after they got popular.
Linda - June 13, 2009 - Report this comment
I wore them sometime between 70 & 74 when I was in high school. I loved them. They were skin tight & very, very short (like all the dresses we wore then) but you didn't have to worry about bending over or showing your underwear because there were matching panties. Mine is yellow with bright-colored splotches & long sleeves. I still have it & was surprised it still fit when I tried it on at 30 (after 2 babies & then twins). I weighed 100 lbs until I was in my mid 20s. Most of today's kids are MUCH heavier than we were & don't seem to care when fat hangs out of their clothes or if they have bulges. If it was unsightly, we covered it up!

The school I atttended had a dress code that required girls to wear dresses. This was the early to mid seventies. A few of the girls wore sizzlers, always with pantyhose. One girl had a few sizzlers in her wardrobe, would wear normal panties instead of the matching ones. Modesty was not part of her agenda as her butt and crotch were on display quite often. No wonder I enjoyed school.
mike - July 20, 2009 - Report this comment
still wondering why I remember a sizzler being called a "bikini dress" ,especialy in Florida, when sizzler seems to be most common. I can well understand why joe enjoyed school, kind of surprised that a teacher, etc. didn,t say something to her.Wonder what grade that was?
joe - July 26, 2009 - Report this comment
This is answering Mike's question about my previous comment. This was in high school and the girl I mentioned was a senior. It is pretty amazing how brazen some of the dresses the girls wore and nothing was ever said as far as I know. I remember boys getting sent home for a t- shirt with something inappropriate on it, but no girl was sent home because her dress was too short.
mike - August 27, 2009 - Report this comment
come on,someone must know why there was a differance (sp?) in the terminolgy-re."sizzler" and "bikini" dress! like I mentioned earlier perhaps this was due to regional usage. Also was the wearing of pantyhose with them widespread? Thanks to everyone for their input!

I wore sizzlers for the short time they were popular,if I recall a young womens clothing store chain did promote them as a "bikini" dress. My group most always wore sheer pantyhose with them to school,on dates etc,and we went without hose when shopping, etc. Some of mine were a polyester knit and some were a smooth nylon acetate fabric, always very tight and very short. Yes, they do sort of look like a tennis dress especialy when you get a glimpse of the panties!

My wife wore sizzler dresses in the seventys. She had a lot because I bought them for her. She looked hot, even after 2 kids. She wore them as they were made to be worn, with the matching panties. But when she added white go-go boots, everyone noticed, especially when we went to the golf driving range. When she would swing the club the dress would swing out giving everyone a good look at the panties.

My wife is 53 years old and has a about a dozen original sizzlers from the seventies. Looks as good today in them as she did when were dating back 35 years ago!!! Has several pair of original platform shoes she wears with them. She always wears pantyhose with them. She's smokin' hot in her long-sleeved leopard print one. All of her sizzler"s are either nylon or acetate jersey. Any other hot 50-somethings still wearing them?

To clarify, I'm the Mike above dated 4-12-2010. Wife read the blog and was flattered by my comments. She goes to the gym 3 times a week and watches her diet; the reward is looking good in sizzlers and other outfits. She mainly wears sizzlers for me; so I find opportunities for her to wear them out. Kinda exhibitionist, I suppose. But if you look good in a sizzler, flaunt it. One of our favorite things to do is going to a smoke-free nightclub in Atlanta that has a "disco 70's" night. Women half my wife's age come up and compliment her look and even offered to buy a sizzler from her if she was getting rid of any. No way! Anyway, long live the "sizzler". My wife would like to read stories about other women still enjoying wearing sizzlers.

I had 2 sizzler's. They were short. One was red and white polka dot and the other a nice mellow [not noisy] floral. Both were silky smooth material, but I do not know what kind of material. Also yes, they were worn with nylons. At thet time everyone wore nylons....bare legs were un heard of. I did NOT like dresses, am a Live/jean girl, but I Loved my sizzler's. I believe I wore them when I was about 16-18 "about". They were adorable! Happy Hunting - I just looked them up because my husband said he never heard of them, so I am trying to find a picture of one now....I have clothes from WAY back then wrapped, but no sizzlers! The original suede fringed hippy/western jackets. I was/am cowgirl.

My girlfriend had a purple and white sizzler outfit, that 38 years later stays in my mind. I can't figure out how her parents let her wear it. Perhaps they understood anything else she wore wasn't going to be on very long any way.

Back in the 70s, my girlfriend would wear her Sizzler dresses everywhere we went. Her little size one body would look great in them. My favorites on her were the multi-colored and flowered ones. She never liked wearing the panties that came with the dresses. She said the panties didn’t fit her butt right so she would buy regular underwear to match the outfits. On those few occasions when she had to bend over, it didn’t really worry her or me much because; they looked so much like the panties that came with the outfit. I always did wonder if anyone who caught a glimpse of what was under her dress knew they were just plain cotton or silk panties. What a great style they were. I’m sure the girls today would look great in them. Would love to see them come back in style.

I remember the sizzler suits and I have often told my daughter of them. I loved the suits because I had to up and down the stairs at school and the boys would stand under the stairs to look up the girls dresses and I always felt a sense of protection that they couldn't see my underwear just the matching pants. They always seemed much sexier than those nothing shorts that girls wear now.
Fl. Mike - September 11, 2010 - Report this comment
I find the use of "Sizzle suit' to be interesting since they were really a dress. Could this be regional terminolgy similar to earlier posts about Bikini Dress? and Sizzler? Comments! Also was the wearing of pantyhose with a Sizzler very common?
Annie - November 14, 2010 - Report this comment
A sizzle dress (with matching panties) was often refered to as a "sizzle set" from what I remember.Pantyhose were almost always worn with them ,bare legs were years away! This was often a new experience for many girls who had never worn hose before.Even longer stockings showed too much bare leg so pantyhose were the solution.

I remember wearing Sizzlers in junior high, 1973 to 1975. By the time I got to high school in fall 1975 they weren't in style anymore. I kept trying to think of the name, and tonight I finally remembered they were called Sizzlers. I don't remember ever seeing one with long sleeves. These were dresses you wore when the weather was nice. We'd wear regular underwear, then nylons, then the matching sizzler (panty) on top of the nylons. They were adorable. I think all of mine were with a flower print. We never worried about bending over because it was more cover than a bikini bottom was.

I'm 20 now and my mom always gave me a hard time in high school about my skirts being too short. I was thrilled when my Grandma informed me about my mom's Sizzlers. She had a hard time with that argument after I found out she used to show matching panties. I bought one for myself yesterday at a thrift store and I can't wait to show my mom! iI remember the two sizzlers I wore back in jr. high school days-looking at some old photos now.One was short-sleeved with a v neckline and the other had long sleeves and a scoop neck and tie-back straps and were they short! I used to ride my bike wearing them, kind of a show-off but I liked doing it,usually never lacked for company! Both dresses were in a flowered print material that was made out of a shiny nylon fabric, the panties were snug around the legs and had a high waistline.I never wore them to school or with pantyhose as I had a nice tan from going to the beach.White heeled sandals went well with them, and of course long, flowing hair! No wonder I never lacked a bike riding companion! Wish I could relive those days!

I had a sizzler dress in 71, 72. It was a shiny silky material with a swirly design. They were VERY short so the deal was to show the matching bottoms, which looked more like panties than the underwear I wore under it. I wore boots most of the time with it, it was a fun relaxed time back then.

I'm so glad I found somebody that remembers the Sizzler. I told my daughters about them for years and of course they couldn't picture their mom in them. I had a few sizzlers and loved them all but my favorite was my wet-look royal blue halter sizzler. I was in 9th grade....going up the stairs at school and not caring if they saw the panties seemed a little devilish. Mine was just long enough to cover the very bottom of the pantie while staring still....but they banned them at school by the end of the school year.

Had a sizzler dress in 75, when I was a 7th grade student @ El Sausal Jr. High in Salinas, California. I am pretty sure my mom bought it @ The Clothes Hanger, on Main in Salinas, which at the time was THE place for fashionable clothing at the time. They also sold Dittos, Cheap Jeans (brand and Chemin De Fer jeans which were all very popular brands at the time. I loved my sizzler dress and wore it often although sans pantyhose which made the panty fit weird, so it was bare tanned legs for me. I believe I wore it with some Sbicca (sp?) platform sandals. HOT! As gas as ages were concerned I'm pretty sure girls from 7th through 12th grades were wearing these dresses at that time. It was a fad that blazed fast and hot. They were super popular for a year or so, the. Just faded away. They were really cute though and girls with nice legs often received much attention in the form of long looks and a few wolf whistles. Maybe that's why they didn't last long. Funny how even though they were super short they looked so cute and feminine girls routinely wore these to church. Thanks for the memories!

I remember being shocked the moment my conservative Roman Catholic Mom answered "Yes" when I begged to have the one I'd picked out. Mine was light beige with multi-colored polka-dots. It was short sleeved with matching panties. And no, pants were not worn over them. The matching panties were meant to show. The mini skirt was popular then so it was a relief to be able to bend down to pick up my schoolbooks and not worry about my underwear showing. Mine was purchased at Pederson's in Bound Brook NJ in 1972. I was in 8th grade. I also wore elephant bell bottoms back then. We called them elephant bells for short. Anyone remember them?

I was just telling my grandson about sizzler dresses. We were talking about the types of clothes that we wore in the 70's. I remember 71,72 having the cutest sizzlers...they were out of a very shiny material, multicolor like bits of stain glass...sort of like the poster that I used to draw and color that were just geometric and loopy shapes. Yes, Carol P..I had elephant bells and palazzo pants too! I wore a lot of halter tops and midriff tops too. Of course, at 5'10 and 100 pounds I was a very tall and skinny teen. Gosh, wish I still had that figure:) It's funny that people are so uptight now when back then it was nothing to wear the sizzler with the panties showing! Not at 11-15 years old anyway!

I absolutely remember the sizzlers. I think the name was related to the "hot pants" which were so popular. These dresses were so hot they sizzled! I remember in the San Francisco Bay area I saw them in the small bright flower prints or very bright paisley prints. The most outrageous story I have is the wedding where the bride and her maids wore sizzlers! It seemed a bit much then but I can only guess that the wedding photos are either hidden or revered now!

Found a place to see a lot of sizzlers-high school yearbooks around 1971-1975.Girls 15-18 sure liked to wear them for pictures.Sure didnt know that some schools required girls to wear dresses to school-was this very common? Most of the sizzlers I have seen were short sleeved and often worn with boots or sandals. betty in Ohio-can you repost your sizzler photo?

I wore them around 76-77 and I was 14-15. I had several and they were like a jersey material. All short sleeved but one. Never did we wear them with hose! The short sleeved ones were always worn with platform shoes of some type and the long sleeved ones were worn with go go boots! Was never a problem wearing them to high school and the guys loved them! I have pics somewhere of me in all of mine. I was just telling a co-worker about them this morning.

The sizzlers came out a couple years after the hot pants girls wore in the early 70's. It was like the sizzlers were the next bold step after seeing hot pants for a couple years.

Does anyone recall referring to the matching underpants as cheaters? That's what we called them in Southern California in the 1970s.

I remember wearing sizzler suits when I was in 4th or 5th grade around 1972-73. There was actually a pattern for these and my gal friend's mom made us a couple of them. I remember girls wearing them to school for a while until the principal outlawed them. I remember the announcement over the intercom about no more sizzler suits allowed and that was when they made the no more than 2 inches above the knee hemline rule. We still wore them to play in, ride bikes, etc.... and yes they are just like tennis outfits, except for mostly being stripes and floral patterns.

I wore a Green Paisley Sizzler Set. What's a sizzler? These were super mini dresses that came with matching little panties - popular for a very brief period of time in the 70s before they got banned in schools and work places. I was 13/14 years old and I remember everyone had one

What a great Halloween I had-a group came to my door of which there were two girls wearing sizzle dresses! The group they were in sort of "took a breather" in my yard-that's when I saw that both girls had on sizzlers. They mentioned that they got the dresses at a local Goodwill. It was a warm nite so they were comfortable as opposed to ones in fancy costumes. Both dresses were of a shiny nylon like material and the panties could be seen when they bent over-wow,I wont forget that nite!

In the early 70's, I frequented a bar where the barmaid wore a flower print Sizzler set that was a halter top style with a plunge neck line and the back was cut down to the waist. We, my buddies and I, would order bottle beer that was stored at floor level. This was not the beer that we would normally drink, but the view was great when she would bend down to get the beer. I think she knew why would order that beer. Bring back the Sizzler sets.

Both dresses were short- sleeved, one wes a green shiny nylon material the other was a blue polyester? material. The panty of both girls could easily be seen as they sat down to talk to people,I sure ate a lot of French fries that day! It was my graduating year, 1972. thin satin summer no sleeve sun dress. Boy, did I used to catch hell from my girlfriend. I just couldn't keep my eyes off the girls that wore them. Back then girls that didn't have a perfect body didn't let it hang out like they do today. AH, '72 was a very good year....

How well I remember taking the company vehicle to the dealership for some warrenty work. There was a girl who moved the cars from the service writer to the shop area and she wore a sizzler that was a pink print short sleeved nylon sizzle dress. I remember she wore brown panty hose that had a huge rip in one leg-that turned me on also.I made sure I got some good viewa as she moved the cars around. I heard later that she moved in with a salesman, never saw her again! I also knew that a new employee had a bucket of water dumped on them after two weeks,I never found out if this occurred to her or not, that sizzler would have made an excellent "dunking' dress.

I remember making one in 8th grade sewing class because my mother refused to buy me one. It was lavender with tiny flowers and frilly sleeves & hem. I loved it! I got to wear it once in our school fashion show & then it mysteriously disappeared from my closet. I also remember during my freshman year of HS that a few of my friends got sent home for wearing them.

I remember in early 70's was at Kmart in St Pete Fla with wife and a man was trying to get his wife to try one on and buy it! She got so mad! I bought it for my wife then ! She was cute as a bug in it! It was a Pink plyester with matching panties! When she wore shere nylones with it the panties would rid up her cracks front and back! She was always shaved! Don't know how many accidents she almost caused! One time she wore a diaper under the panties just to see the response! We drove by a semis and she bent over on my lap and the semi almost wrecked! Those where the days! SHe loved wearing it with just the sheer pantihose only under it! WOW!!!!

Cliff, I'd say about 33% of the time I wore mine with no panties at all. I never did the pantyhose thing I always wore either RHT or FF stockings with them whether I wore panties or not. Seeing my stocking tops and my garter belt straps used to drive the guys wild with desire.

sizzlers were not skin tight - wore them all the time. It is what you would wear playing tennis and other sports, and skin tight was NOT where it was at. But oh so awesome, especially when you had long slender legs!

I had a couple of Sizzler dresses in '73-'74. I know for sure that I wore them while I was in 8th % 9th grades. I know some people are saying that older girls wore them but my recall is that they were primarily worn by 12-15 year old girls. My favorite one was navy blue with a sailboat pattern and an anchor on the zipper pull.

Still have 3 original sizzlers from the 70's. Have not worn in a long long time. A couple of Saturday nights ago, Hubby said put one on and lets go to the retro diner in town that has curb service and once a month car cruise-in. Let me tell you, they still fit and got lots of compliments while we walked around the cars on display. For a senior type that I am, it made me fill like a teenager again. Going to wear them again each month at the diner cruise-in.

Me and my cousin wore them back in 1973/74. I was about 12 and she was 13, you could not tell us anything. All the girls wanted one but we were the first in our block to break out with them, I will never forget them. They were the hottest style out. My nieces and friends can’t believe I wore something like that.

I was in Jr. High school in the mid-70s, and a few of the girls wore sizzlers to school. I remember that some of the boys would wait at the bottom of the stairs until a girl in a sizzler headed upstairs, then they'd follow her at a distance. With the matching panties, they were basically looking at a bathing suit, but boys will be boys. :-)
