Great look, Exellent comfort, the only shoes to own in high school in the seventies! You wore them until the stitching wore out in the front of the soles, at which point they became "talking Abners" Been looking for them for years!

I loved those boots. LOVED THEM. Bought them in the army/navy store on 63rd Drive in Rego Park, Queens, NY. I wore them all through high school and right into college. Soles were so worn down I skidded down the street on the ice. I wish I had never thrown them out. I MISS THEM>!!!!

I have been looking for these shoes for years. While in jr and sr high school on Long Island these were on everyone's feet - puma's for gym class though. I wore the origina version that had light tan suede with similar color leather center. As the shoes became wildly popular and the "in" shoe, other companies began making them in all different color suedes and of course, lower quality. The soles of the original versions were key. they had a heel of hard compound with the word vulcan pressed into the heel. the sole was a composite material that I believe had some cork fiber in it. yes, when the stiching in front wore out you had talking abners! The rest of the shoe was virtually indestructible....

Thorogood shoes makes a roofers boot that is almost on the mark. wish the center leather was light color leather. I am 50 yrs old and will be purchasing a pair of these. These were insanely comfortable and lasted forever. Perhaps these will be back in style again.... I believe they'd sell quite well to the 40-60 yr old crowd looking to shred their rockports and sperry's.

Well, the clock has been turned back. I now have my roofer boots aka lil abners. Just like the ones i wore years ago. I have received many compliments and my teenage sons think they are awesome and think they look fantastic with jeans.... no to break them in.........

I'm 60 years old and wore 'Lil Abners all through my school years until high school. Mine were always black and when worn down were resoled with "Cat's Paw" heels and soles for many more miles of wear. The closest I've seen to my old style are found by Red Wing Shoes, the Iron Ranger line and the others I've found at Duluth Trading Company. Both of these have cap toes which mine didn't, but are more authentic to my old style then the lace to toe roofer styles. I think the Iron Rangers may be found at Sportsmans Guide online as well. This doesn't appear to allow links to be posted but standard search engines for the three companies listed should be successful.

I bought them too on 63rd Drive in Rego Park, along with "Smith Jeans" Why is it soo hard to find them. I wish I never threw mine out. Funny how our feet would freeze in the winter & we'd still where them. I miss my lil' Abner's! =(

I had a pair of denim little abners with red stitching and I always wore them with my overalls with the bib hanging down and a bandana in the back pocket and my Angela Davis size afro. That was in the 70's! I miss my boots.

I was looking for a picture of those shoes that is how I came across this page. No luck on the picture. Reading these comments it seems all are from greater NY area I wonder if they were a regional style.

I got my Lil Abners (tan) in NYC in 1980 and still wear them every other day to work. Impossible to describe how incredibly comfortable and well made; so when asked "Where did you buy those shoes?" I begin by saying "In NYC, 34 years ago...."

This must by a Westchester/NYC thing. I too loved my boots and wore then with overalls! Strikingly feminine haha. I would totally rock them now with leggings and a long shirt!
