Description: flipflops with leather straps on top, much like those seen at American Eagle today. As a teen in Florida in the late 70's, that was part of the daily "school uniform" which consisted of a pair of Levis, an Hawaiian tropic t-shirt, and flipflops. Excellent!

In Texas, where I lived in the 70s, flip-flops were called thongs. I doubt they are anymore, for obvious reasons. They were forbidden to wear in school because during the liberatory years of the early 70s, students had taken to wearing them with cutoff shorts and string-bikini-tops masquerading as halter tops, and administrators got sick of all the casualness. Popular 70s styles were I lived included rubber ones with rainbow souls - those were probably the most popular, really.

They were also called thongs when I was a kid. There were 2 styles; the current one with the part that goes through your toes and the other with a crisscross strap over the top of the toes. I always wore the latter style because the other hurt my toes. They were very cheap in price and I remember buying them at a Ben Franklin store.

In the 70's flip flops or zoris used to cost at most 25 cents. I would wear them all the time the sole was white bottom of the sole and thong came in different colors. I had black, blue, green, brown and red.
