Description
They were the "Krate" series bikes. Orange - Orange Krate, Red - Apple Krate, Yellow - Lemon Peeler, Green - Pea Picker, and Silver - Grey Ghost. Schwinn has made some reproductions of these over the past few years.

schwinn bikes with the banana seat-ultra 70's! my brother had one thats seat was yellow w/sparkles.way cool,i wonder why they dont have banana seats anymore? did they mess with your reproduction stuff?

You forgot one Krate in your description. It was the White - Cotton Picker. It was only produced for 2 years and the Grey Ghost for only 1 year. They are the rarest of the series.

I had one of the early Orange Krates,My dad gave me for Christmas,Best present ever!!!I rode it the next day even in the snow!! 3 years later it was stolen out of are garage,I had My parents drive bme all over town looking for the thief & my bike,but never found it!Some times I still have dreams about my Orange Krate, Im 51 Y.O.

In 74 local bike shop had orange crate and a pea picker the orange crate looked better so my friend and I were trying to save up money for them he told me he had bought the orange cause he knew I almost had the money so I bought the peapicker for 35 bbbucks and it ended up the better bike,I was 11 years old, that was fun

The prices of Schwinn Krate bikes went up dramatically in the five years they were made at the Chicago plant. Starting at $83 (1968) to $137 (1973). These were smaller bikes, aimed at kids under 14 years old. I recently visited the area where Schwinn's plant was, off North Ave, on Kildare in Chicago. Now, park land nestled in a residential neighborhood. You'd never thought a factory had been there.
