I had this doll. It was a great addition to the boyfriend choices for Barbie!

My brothers both had G.I.Joes. My older brother got the talking one so he could boss around my younger brother's Grunt. They both had the copters too. When they weren't off on a mission they both hung out in my room at Barbie's house. Barbie was a lucky girl.

My brother refused to let me touch his precious G.I. Joe, even though he’d stopped playing with it years earlier. So my mom bought me this knock-off version called Fighting Yank, with the new style hands. My Barbie was always dumping Ken for him, then running back to Ken when he tried to get her into that Kung-fu grip. He looked like Frankenstein's monster coming at her. I still think she would've been happiest with the genuine G.I. Joe.

"G.I. Joe, G.I. Joe, fighting man from head to toe," was the early jingle for Hasbro's Action Marine. A commercial I have featuring a mini playset with a dock and raft, from a kinescope of "The Casper Cartoon Show (9/10/66, ABC-TV)." The first G.I. Joe men of 1964 and '65 are now worth over $1,000 on the collectible market.
