Description
I don't know how popular this was, but I had a Flip Wilson rag doll. One side was Flip and the other side was Geraldine. There was a string to pull for the doll to speak. The line I remember was,"The devil made me wear this dress."

My sister surprised me recently at Christmas with a Flip Wilson doll she bought on eBay!!!! Hysterical one-liners also include: Flip: "I smell a rat, and the wind is coming from your direction" Flip: "The ugly people know who they are- DON'T THEY?" Geraldine: "What you see is what you get, honey- Whooo!!" Geraldine: "Help, y'all- they got me trapped inside this doll"

I had almost forgot this part of my childhood. I can remember describing this toy to one of my college friends and he had a hard time believing such a thing exsisted. Another great line was, "If I'da known you were commin I'da stayed in Harlem."

My doll still talks, I've had it since I was 8 or 9 (30+ years. It also says "Oh yeah, and I'll punch you right in the fist with my face" "Easy on that string, I'm only gonna tell you one more time" "I like the blues 'cause when the record wears out it still sounds the same" Geraldine: "The Devil made me buy this dress""If I'd a known you were comin' I'd a stayed at home"

I too had the doll. Forgot about a couple of the great lines. The string in mine broke in the early 80's. Me and a friend did surgery, pulled out the voice (WHICH IS A LITERAL VINYL RECORD about 3 inches in diameter) and buried him in the yard. I still have the little record, hoping somday I can take it off the spindle and play it like an LP. CLASSIC!

I was just talking about this doll because my sister bought her husband one when I was just a kid. None of them remembered it! I felt like I was losing it but that little voice in the back of my head kept say. "I smell a rat and the wind is coming from your direction" Glad to see you all loved Flip too.

I had a Flip Wilson doll when i was a kid in the 70's. I loved to flip it over to the side of either Geraldine or flip. I had it stored in a airtight bag in a box in my garage, and last week when i cleaned it out I found Flip. It looked perfect and I wanted to show it to my 18 year old daughter because i used to tell her about it. when we took him out of the bag flips face stuck to the bag. Good bye Flip and Geraldine I tried to save you. But I have great memories

Just wanted to add comment about the flip Wilson dollars. I had one when I was a child and was recalling some of the first dolls or most remembered toys I had growing up and that was one and I wish I still had them

The Sears 1971 Wish Book listed the Flip/Geraldine Wilson Talking Doll for $6. Manufactured by Mattel for Shindanna Toys. Clerow Wilson was a talented comedian who died too young (64). The first two seasons (1970-72) of his variety show were the best. Later, the act got repetitive, and the falling ratings resulted.

I had this toy when I was a kid in the early 70's. I just got to thinking about it... and I remembered "The Devil made me buy this dress!" and "The ugly people know who they are... don't they?" But I'm glad other commenters have documented the several other funny lines it said. Now I can still hear in my head, Geraldine's voice saying "Wht you see is what you get, honey, WOO!" Don't know what ever happened to it, but I used to sit and pull that string for hours to hear those funny lines over and over. And I still remember the Flip Wilson show on TV. Sadly, we lost him to liver cancer in 1998.

Found no original TV commercials for Flip Wilson doll. Did see a YouTube video of a person pulling the cord to hear the spoken phrases. Funny, this was intended as a child's toy, while some phrases advocated violence or mild sexual innuendo. True, it was part of Wilson's act, but not exactly appropriate for small kids.
