We had several barrels of these guys around, and we also had the big barrel version.A good honest game for kids even today....

I loved this game. Just bought a set for my sister's 50th birthday later this year.

My family first got the Barrel of Monkeys game in 1967. Back then, it was made by Lakeside Toys, which also made the bendable Gumby and Pokey toys. Lakeside Toys, yet another smaller manufacturer to go bankrupt as the 1970s began. There were 12 monkeys in the barrel. Another toy/game which had a limited fun factor. I have a 1967 TV commercial, but it didn't appear to be off a network cartoon program. Probably syndicated.

Found an earlier Barrel of Monkeys TV commercial from 1965. This, with the cardboard cylinder container instead of the plastic two-piece barrel. Lakeside Toys, not big spenders, advertised only on local or syndicated children's programs...same as when they sold the Bozo, Gumby and Pokey bendable toys. After Milton Bradley acquired the rights in 1970 did Barrel of Monkeys get network TV exposure.
