Description
The Wowee Whistle was an orange wax "harmonica", with Halloween--themed label. Seems they're no longer made (although there's a hint that Concord Confections, maker of Wack-O-Wax wax lips may be) -- they should be made if they're not! Nicholas Cage plays one in the film "Valley Girl", as a sort of joke on "playing the blues" -- maybe eventually that'll help revive the Wowee Whistle....

I'm lucky--bought two of these on e-bay (50s version, made by Glenn Confectioners) for less than $25 for the pair. They were in great shape, and are the pride of my collection!

I remember those "harmonicas".At the time,(early-mid 70's),they cost 10 cents. I can still remember the flavour;slightly fruit with a touch of mint almost afterwards.

Aaaah....the memories of being a child in the 70's. Now those were the true DAYS. That Wowee whistle (harmonica) was the best thing since sliced bread. It had that sweet taste to it and once you started chewing on it, you almost couldn't help yourself but to swallow some of it. They should bring back LEMON JOLLY RACHERS and Sour Cream & Onion DORITOS...not Ranch!! I even remember the Big Wheel and Yo-Yo ladies shoes and hip huggers and baggies (jeans) and Nehi Strawberry, grape, orange, lemon and good ole's DAD's rootbeer. Remember the cereals Frankeberry and Boo-Berry??? And good ole's Frostie Root Beer! THE GOOD OLE' DAYS!!! Ooooh to be a child again at Christmas Time! Wonderful days...anyone agree?

I was just telling my kids about the wax whistles and how great they were! You knew around Halloween time they would be at the stores. I remember trying to chew just enough so I could still blow the whistle but I would eventually cave and chew the whole thing! Please bring them back!!!!! You can clearly see there is a market for them!!:)

In the fifties, the candy store down the street would sell orange & black wowee whistles! We always chewed them up and posted the cardboard thingies on our bedroom wall...I think they cost a dime...And OH...So worth it! Usually got a pair of wax lips to go with them! Yummy!

I read, within a year or so, that whatever company bought up the "witch's whistle", as I fondly remember it (being 'poor', they were a rare treat!!!) destroyed the molds or whatever form that was used to make them. I was heartbroken!!! SOMEBODY"S got to get them made again- I'm 52, for land's sake!!!
Rachael - February 04, 2012 - Report this comment
I read that the molds were lost when the company went out of business.

Here's the response that I got from Tootsie Roll, who now owns the company which made Wowee Whistles: Terry, thanks for contacting us. We appreciate the interest, but there are no plans to re-introduc the Wowee Whistle at this time. From: Terry Maloney Sent: Saturday, January 28, 2012 10:39 AM To: Andrews, Susan Subject: TRI Website - Contact Request Name Terry Maloney Question Howdy- I am typing in regard to a wax product called the "WOWEE WHISTLE", which was a wax harmonica sold in the days of my youth around Hallowe'en. I just read an old post that stated Concord Confections was displaying a 'new' WOWEE WHISTLE at a 2004 candy convention, and another post that Tootsie Roll Industries now owns Concord. If the latter is true, is the former available? I have searched for the WOWEE WHISTLE for years, to no avail; I, and many others, would be overjoyed if a fond memory was available again! I anxiously await your reply, and hope that time CAN be turned back, if only for a bit of wax! Sincerely, Terry Maloney

Please, please, please bring these Wowee Whistles back again. I remember giving them out at Halloween (while keeping quite a few for myself to enjoy..lol) and the kids would sometimes come back for another one pretending they hadn't been at my house before. I could hear them being played all over the neighborhood that night and kids yelling, "hey, go to their house. they have Wowee Whistles!" They were fun and yummy too.

Sylvia - September 13, 2014 - Report this comment
It just wasn't Halloween if you didn't have an orange wax whistle wowee whistle! We rarely blew them for long as we would find ourselves chewing on them. They weren't that sweet but as good as gum to occupy one. Therefore, my mother never minded getting us some, because soon, we were quietly chewing. I surely do hope to find them somewhere. I think I will start with some places known to still sell "nostalgic" candy. I know that Halloween is only one day a year but preciouis memories abound and the young still need to be able to enjoy this wonderful, yet simple treat!! PLEASE... someone... bring these back.

What would it take to get a petition up to send to Tootsie Roll? I'm 55, and lack the skills to set up a site to attract "Whistle-Wanters"; my sole request got no interest from Tootsie Roll (see post, above.) Any ideas?

A few years ago I was surfing around retro sites and found an article that someone bought candy molds at an auction and destroyed the ones for the whistles but sold the wax lips mold. I cannot find that article anywhere now but I remember them-tasted sort of like Pepto Bismo-Beamint gum-they had Pepsin in them. Miss them!

I actually was able to purchase a Wowee Whistle in approximately 1990ish when my kids were little at Wal-Mart but have been unable to find any since. I grew up in the 60's and the sound of these whistles up & down the neighborhood signified to me that Halloween was near. I would love to see them return for my grandchildren to enjoy!!
