Back in 1970 my parents were going through a nasty divorce and I was shipped off to sleepover camp. I was so miserable. The only thing that kept me going, and put a smile on my face, was the weekly visit to the tuck shop and the Swell chocolate bar that I would buy there. Now, over 45 years later, I still think of those chocolate bars with such fondness. Too bad that they were discontinued and no one even remembers them or how great they were.

I wish I knew what company made Swell. I remember the bar as having coconut, cherries and nuts and possibly even raisins. I called it the " everything" bar. I got a .10 cent allowance a week and I'd buy a Swell.

Swell bars were made by Willards Chocolates in Toronto. The Swell bar was developed in the late 1940s by accident. My father worked at Willards and made a mistake with a recipe. Rather than wasting the chocolate, he (and presumably others at the plant) added other ingredients and the Swell bar was born.

Swell bars were my Mom’s favourite! She would pick one up now and then and it would last a week! She knew her six kids wouldn’t steal it because it was too sophisticated for our liking. Willard’s had some great products, my next door neighbour in Scarborough ON worked there.
