You described it as being called "Pop Rocks" That's the 80's version, the candy that popped that came out in the 70s was Cosmic Candy. It came in little pouches in Grape, Cherry, Strawberry, and Orange, and had stars, planets, and comets on the front.

Oh wow I was trying to figure out what it was called. My kids LOVE poprocks and I knew there was a candy out there like it!!!
I remember my little sister eating orange cosmic candy and when it started popping and fizzing she threw up all over the car! Ughhh!!!
