I remember when proper overcoats with a 1940s/1950s look came back in in the early 80s that people would refer to any topcoat as a "trench coat," even if it didn't have the shoulder straps and epaulets that real trench coats have. I had an early 60s overcoat at the time that I got at a thrift store and people incessantly referred to it as a trench coat, too. It wasn't. Real trench coats were popular at the time, though, especially since big shoulders were in and the pronounced epaulets fit right in.
