Smiley pillows were also popular. I remember that my cousin wanted one very badly and aunt Jane refused to spend money for one -- but she made some that looked exactly like the ones in the store and everyone got one. I had that thing forever!

There were all kinds of patches popular in the early 70s. I had a Mickey Mouse one, one of a green-and-white ecology symbol, and a smiley face. Smiley faces were everywhere in the early 70s, mostly in yellow but also in other colors. They weren't popular during the entire decade. And even in the early 70s, they seemed kind of naff and unserious compared to peace signs, which were even more ubiquitous than smiley faces in the early 70s.

I don't remember if my 70s baby clothes had patches - I only remember plain ones.

I'm trying to find a patch that says Soul. They used to have them in the 70's and they were bad ass. They were written like the Soul Train font, but they just said Soul. They had them at Van ins all the time. By the way, I love this website.

In general, the yellow smile face phenomenon began late 1971. It was coming out of people's ears when 1972 began. The smile face also inspired an anti-poison commission to introduce the green Mister Yuck face.
