Loved the pompom socks! Except when the pompom would get stuck and it felt like you had a "flat tire".

We didn't call them socks where I was from. We called them Footsies, and later pom pom footies. I hated that flat tire effect, too. Had a different color for each day of the week. At first they were plain white on the footie part, then stripes and polka dots came in towards 79-80.

In 1976 I was working as a sweeperette at Cedar Point (an amusement park in Ohio). The uniforms were yellow bib overalls over red/blue plaid blouses, and we all wore pom-pom footies. They were cute! Clothes were FUN in the 70s. No clothing since has been as much fun, except perhaps the early 90s neon-and-ruffles Peg Bundy look.

The pom poms kept the sock from going into your tennis shoe.

I seem to recall that low-rise socks had a tendency to slip down off of your heel, which of course was very uncomfortable. The pom pom fit above the shoe-line, and kept your socks from slipping down. Ingenious! Manufacturers must have since figured out how to make better fitting socks, so I don't recall having this problem since the early 1980's.
