I remember wearing Joe Cocker shirts in high school! You could get them in every color. You'd wear them (if you were a girl) with a shag haircut, too-long jeans that dragged in the dirt behind you and got ratty, Adidas, and a bomber jacket like this: http://tinyurl.com/m68uuhf

What we used to call "Joe Cocker" shirts were in fact a t-shirt, long or short sleave with a Henley collar
