I think my sister invented these. Back in the early 80's .She tried to go into a dress club wearing cut off jean shorts.They wouldn't let her in , said she couldn't wear shorts. Long story short. She went to her car,ripped the shorts open.Used boyfriends knife to fashion the bottom.And a frayed edge blue jean mini skirt was born....they let her in...

This started in the late 60's actually, and was seen mainly in long skirts in the early '70s. At least that's what I experienced in CA. :)
